chapter 76
75 – The Secretary’s Political Marriage
While Arian’s father, Balak Frigia, was talking with Arian, someone approached Franz.
“Nice to meet you. I am Lize Frigia, the mistress of the family.”
The mistress of the family.
She was Balak’s lawful wife and Arian’s mother.
“Nice to meet you. I am Franz Gilbert, the Tower Master.”
In response to her polite greeting, Franz also greeted her politely.
“I have heard that my daughter is working as your secretary, but I am a bit worried about how she is doing. She left my care when she was still quite immature…”
“She is doing well enough, so you don’t need to worry. She is one of the few people in the tower whom I can trust with work.”
“That’s a relief.”
She smiled softly.
‘They look alike.’
It seems that blood cannot be ignored. From the smiling expression to the worried look, their overall features were quite similar. It made him think that Arianne might look like this as she ages.
At that moment, someone else approached Franz.
This time, it was not one person but two.
“Hello. I am Luri Frigia, the second daughter of the Frigia Duchy.”
“Hello. I am Lina Frigia, the third daughter.”
Second and third daughters.
Since Arianne was the eldest, these were her younger sisters.
“Yes, nice to meet you.”
Franz received their greetings politely.
But it didn’t end there.
As if they had been waiting, more people approached Franz to greet him.
They were all from the Frigia Duchy, with no one from other families mixed in.
He knew that nobles usually had many children, but the Frigia Duchy seemed to have an exceptionally large number.
Just counting Arianne’s younger sisters, there were six of them, and Franz began to understand the situation.
‘They didn’t have a son.’
Depending on the family, it is usually the son who inherits the position of the head of the family.
The Frigia Duchy must be the same. Since they didn’t have a son to inherit the position, they kept having children.
As expected, the last person to greet Franz was a young-looking man.
“Hello, Tower Master. I am Marcel Frigia.”
“Yes, nice to meet you.”
“I have a question. May I ask you something?”
They had just met, so what could he be so curious about?
Could he be interested in magic?
Franz thought so and answered.
“Yes, please feel free to speak.”
“I’m curious about what you came in. It’s amazing that it moves without being pulled by a horse.”
Finally, finally, someone showed interest in the carriage.
No matter how young, a man is still a man.
‘I almost felt disappointed.’
I was hoping someone would ask about the carriage, but as I passed by my six younger sisters, no one said anything, and I almost felt quite disappointed.
Of course, now that Marcel asked, it’s fine.
Anyway, since he showed interest, I should repay him accordingly.
“This is a newly developed carriage from the Magic Tower. If you’re curious, you can try riding it.”
“Really?”
Marcel answered with wide eyes but soon began to look at his mother for permission.
He was asking for permission, as it might be a nuisance.
With a smile, Lize said to Franz,
“If it’s alright with the Tower Master, please go ahead.”
With Lize’s permission, Marcel smiled brightly.
Even though he was the next head of the family, he was still a child, showing a pure smile befitting his age.
“Shall we go then?”
“Yes!”
Franz passed by Arian, who was talking with Balak, and headed to the parked car with Marcel.
“Wow…”
Marcel exclaimed as he looked around the exterior of the car.
It was like an elementary school student discovering a supercar in the 21st century.
“You can touch it.”
“Yes, yes…!”
Even though Franz readily gave permission, Marcel’s actions were still cautious.
Sometimes, immature nobles act recklessly without knowing their place, but it seemed Marcel had received good home education.
Eventually, Franz and Marcel got into the car.
When Franz pressed the button to start the engine,
“Wow-!”
Seeing the lights come on in the magic circuit, Marcel exclaimed again.
Should I give him one as a gift later?
Seeing how genuinely he liked it, such thoughts crossed my mind.
This must be why uncles give gifts to little kids.
Though I’m not a real uncle.
But who would have known that Marcel was thinking of a relationship closer than that of an uncle?
At least Franz didn’t know.
It was shortly after the car started moving.
“Master of the Tower.”
“Yes, please speak.”
“May I ask when you plan to marry my sister?”
…?
Franz’s mind froze at Marcel’s words.
What on earth was he talking about?
It was so absurd that he didn’t even know how to react.
“What do you mean by that…?”
“I know it’s rude to ask, but because Arian hasn’t married, the other sisters are delaying their marriages too. It’s old-fashioned, but tradition is tradition. This party was actually held to find a husband for Arian.”
I understood what he meant.
Because of Arian, the other younger sisters couldn’t get married.
Thinking about his sisters’ marriages, he really was a good brother.
If I had such a brother, I would cherish him as much as I could.
But apart from that, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was a misunderstanding.
Well.
‘Arian’s marriage partner isn’t me?’
I wasn’t even dating Arian, let alone marrying her.
It was just bewildering to hear the word marriage out of the blue.
Sigh-.
But after saying that, it felt awkward to outright refuse.
Finally, a savior who could rescue his sisters appeared, but if it turned out that the savior was just a guy who came to enjoy the party, it would be a bit much.
Even though I knew very well that it wasn’t true, I was reluctant to reveal the truth.
However, since marriage was not something to be taken lightly, Franz opened his mouth.
“I think you are misunderstanding something, sir.”
“Misunderstanding…?”
“Yes, Arian and I are not in that kind of relationship.”
“Oh…?”
Marcel’s face showed a look of confusion.
“I apologize for the great offense. I didn’t know…”
“It’s alright. I’m just sorry I couldn’t be of help.”
In the end, it was close to a pure misunderstanding, but human hearts were not so cold.
It’s easier to take the life of a demon.
“If even the Tower Master isn’t an option, then Arian really will have to go through with an arranged marriage…”
Marcel said in a tone of regret.
He must be heartbroken at the thought of his sister marrying someone she doesn’t want.
In the modern 21st century, it might seem like a really outdated story, but here, arranged marriages are common.
For nobles, marriage is more a means of politics than of love between a man and a woman.
Even if it was someone they didn’t want, if the family wanted it, they had no choice but to comply.
‘I feel unnecessarily guilty…’
For some reason, it felt like Arian was being forced into an arranged marriage because of him.
“Can’t you use your influence, sir?”
“I am aware that I am the next head of the family, but I don’t think it will be easy.”
Yes, I know.
I said it even though I knew.
‘Honestly, I don’t want Arian to end up like that.’
Even if it’s someone else’s family matter, Arian is still his secretary.
I hope she can live a happy life. As comfortably and joyfully as she worked hard in the Magic Tower.
Moreover, it would be troublesome if she suddenly left for an arranged marriage or something.
At least a year, no, two years of transition is needed. If she just leaves, it will be a big problem.
Thinking this, Franz sighed deeply.
In a time when he should be thinking about his own marriage, he was worrying about someone else’s. What a mess…
Anyway, this can’t be left as it is.
“I will try my best.”
“Pardon…? What do you mean by that…?”
“Isn’t it good to at least make an effort?”
Since she said she liked men who were her age, good at magic, cool, and handsome, it should work out if she looked around the Magic Tower.
But first, she had to talk to Arian.
In the end, the drive date with Marcel ended without much gain.
She should have asked about the trident of the Duke of Frigia, but she missed the chance because her head was filled with thoughts of Arian’s arranged marriage.
“Thank you. The new carriage is a very splendid thing.”
“I hope it was a good experience for you.”
Marcel got out of the car and bowed his head in greeting.
No matter how many times she saw him, he was always polite and amiable, a kid she really liked.
After parking the car in a suitable place, Arian approached.
“Master of the Magic Tower, I will guide you to your room.”
“Did the others go in first?”
“Yes, they entrusted me with guiding you and went in first. We will gather again later for dinner, so don’t worry.”
Not that she was worried.
Well, it didn’t matter.
Arian stepped inside the mansion, and Franz followed her, leaving the darkening sky behind.
The room they arrived at with Arian was quite luxurious.
It was fitting for a duke’s mansion, not inferior even when compared to the Master of the Magic Tower’s room.
“Just think of it as your room and make yourself comfortable. If there’s anything inconvenient, just call any servant and tell them. When the meal is ready later….”
“Arian, wait a moment.”
Franz stopped Arian, who was about to leave the room.
It was time to talk about what she had heard from Marcel.
