Chapter 24: Is she a villain?
"I'm Alex Carter?" I said, more like a question like why are you asking? as I met Alina's sharp gaze.
Her eyes were calculating, cold yet precise, like a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope. She adjusted her glasses with two fingers, murmuring my name under her breath.
"Alex… Alex… Where have I heard that name before?" Her voice was low, more to herself than to anyone else.
Then, as if a switch had flipped, she looked directly at me, her eyes narrowing.
"By any chance," she asked, her tone still eerily calm, "are you the Alex who received a starter from Cherry?"
I hesitated for only a second before nodding and said "Yes its me."
At my confirmation, she barely reacted—her expression remained unreadable, only the faintest shift in her posture hinting at her thoughts.
"Which one did you take?"
I tensed.
Something about the way she asked made me uneasy. Maybe it was her tone, too neutral, too careful.
I crossed my arms. "First of all, miss—who are you?"
A flicker of amusement passed through her eyes before she straightened her stance, lifting her chin slightly as if making an announcement.
"I am Professor Alina." She said it with confidence, as if the name alone should carry enough weight to answer my question.
"Head scientist of all research labs across both Kanto and Johto. One of the last personal students of the great Professor Oak himself."
Her voice carried pride, but not arrogance—more like a person who had earned the right to boast.
My thoughts immediately jumped to Professor Cherry. So she's just like her.
Before I could ask anything else, she took a step forward, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Now, could you—"
A sudden voice from below cut her off.
A sharp, mechanical sound came from the wreckage of the lab floor, and a familiar blur of orange and blue shot through the air.
[Alex Carter! I was searching for you! Where were you?!]
Rotom zipped toward me, sparks flying from its exhausted frame as it emerged from the window, its screen flickering slightly from overuse.
Alina turned at the voice, her expression shifting from mild irritation to sudden recognition.
As Rotom hovered beside me, it paused mid-motion, finally noticing the tall scientist standing a few feet away.
[Hahaha! Looks like Miss Alina is also here! How are you, miss?] it said, floating lazily, though the twitch of its screen suggested nervous energy.
Alina's eyes narrowed slightly. "Which Rotom are you?"
Without missing a beat, Rotom puffed up—if floating computers could do such a thing—and grinned smugly.
[Of course! I am the great Number #2!]
I blinked. Number… two?
"I didn't know you had a number for a name," I said, shooting Rotom a look.
Suzie, still beside me, let out a small chuckle before taking over.
"There's a whole system in place made by miss Aline and Proffesor Cherry," she explained. "The Rotom's that assist in labs have assigned numbers. Some are standard research assistants, others are specialized AI that handle different experiments or security measures."
Before I could process that information, Rotom spun around dramatically. "I really dont know anything about you, right?
[Yes,Alex Carter, there are so many things you don't know about me!] It wiggled its screen as if to emphasize its point.
I sighed. "Yeah, I'm getting that feeling."
Then my expression hardened as I crossed my arms. "But since we're talking—why don't you tell me why you were fighting against that Aerodactyl?"
The energy in the air shifted.
Suzie stiffened slightly, while Alina's gaze flickered with something unreadable. Even Rotom—normally so animated—went oddly still, its screen dimming for just a second before Suzie started talking! "Miss Alina Im sure we could find whats left of Aerodactyl ıf we search for it. With the DNA of that fossil we can make new one like that one! Should ı give access to team in order for them to search?" she said while secretly giving me a thumbs up
Then, slowly, Rotom floated a little closer to me.
[That… is a long story.]
"Yeah? Then you could tell me on the way!" I said, grabbing Rotom without another word and making a beeline for the exit.
Suzie was still keeping Alina busy, her voice carrying bits of forced laughter as I slipped past the conversation unnoticed.
[Alex Carter, what's the hurry?] Rotom buzzed, its screen flickering as I held it under my arm.
I moved quickly, descending the stairs two at a time. "Rotom, I don't know how, but I feel like that woman is going to be a problem."
I didn't wait for a response. My legs carried me faster toward the museum's exit, urgency bubbling in my chest.
As I reached the main hall, I spotted David standing near the entrance, his helmet tucked under his arm. He waved as I passed.
"Where are you two going? I was gonna invite you two to my house!" he called out.
"Maybe next time!" I shouted back, barely slowing down.
Rotom, still tucked under my arm, wiggled slightly. [Goodbye, David!] it chimed, its usual playful tone back for a moment.
Once outside, I quickly set my sights on Route 3.
My thoughts raced as I walked, the fresh air doing little to clear the unease in my chest.
I don't need to be a genius to know she's going to be a problem.
After all, this was still Pokémon—and if all my years of playing had taught me anything, it was that people like Alina didn't just show up for no reason.
Before I could get too lost in my thoughts, Rotom jolted out of my grip and spun around to face me, its screen flashing brightly.
[Alex Carter, slow down!] it blurted, startling me enough to make me stop. [I don't know why you're scared, but calm down! You're hearth beat is getting faster]
"I'm not scared!" I snapped back, my voice coming out sharper than I intended. "I'm just—being careful!"
[Oh, really?] Rotom hovered in place, its expression shifting into something skeptical. [Then why are you being 'careful' all of a sudden Alex Carter?]
I exhaled, running a hand through my hair as I glanced around. No one was paying attention to us—the road ahead was quiet, save for the distant chatter of trainers setting up picnics along the route.
Still, I lowered my voice.
"Rotom, look. I don't know why, but something about that Alina woman is just… off. I can't explain it, but my gut is telling me she's bad news."
Rotom was silent for a moment. Then, its screen flickered.
[So you're telling me we busted out of the museum—for that reason?] it huffed, exasperation clear in its voice.
I frowned. "No, not fo.... ı mean yes but—"
[Alright, alright. Let's go then!] Rotom interrupted with a resigned sigh, floating beside me.
I blinked. "Wait, you're not going to question it any further?"
Rotom hummed, its voice carrying an amused lilt. [Alex Carter, that woman named us with Numbers. Of course, I understand why you're thinking like that. So don't worry—let's just keep moving.]
I couldn't help but smile a little. He's getting smarter. I though before pressing forward and stepping onto the rocky, uneven path of Route 3.
The terrain was rugged, lined with jagged cliffs and scattered boulders. I spotted a few trainers along the way—some resting with their Pokémon, others setting up small picnic spots beneath patches of shade.
A fresh wind rolled through the route, carrying with it the sounds of distant battles.
Mt. Moon and more loomed in the distance.
