Chapter 334: The Abby Phenomenon
Time flew by, and soon it was January of the new year.
Another year had passed, and the new season was about to begin.
The previous Devon Cup had ultimately been won by the restructured Otter Team, with the Blaze Team taking second place.
The hype surrounding these two teams was now at an all-time high! They had pushed the old "big three" off their pedestal and had become the new twin kings of the league.
As for Starlight and Frost… because of their group stage elimination in the Devon Cup, their current popularity had shrunk significantly, even falling below that of the Sea Carp team, which had lost its Best Rookie.
Just like the saying goes: "Fallen on hard times, folks."
However, to the surprise and delight of the team's management, the team's morale had not plummeted due to this setback.
On the contrary, the atmosphere within the team was now unexpectedly good!
Everyone was自觉地 putting in extra training, from morning to night, every single day!
This scene had once made the headmistress-like head coach push up her glasses three times, wondering if she was seeing things.
It had even made her feel a twinge of disappointment and self-doubt—
Am I failing as a coach? Which god-tier individual has whipped this group of problem children into such good shape? And I didn't hear a single thing about it!
Even Aaron, that slacker with the slacker mentality, had been working incredibly hard lately! He trained from morning to night every day. If it weren't for the fact that he still carried his signature thermos everywhere he went, the headmistress would have almost suspected he had been replaced by a body-snatcher.
This was simply unscientific!
What on earth has happened to my team? The headmistress never would have thought that one day, while coaching a team, she would ask herself such an amateurish question!
To this, the "mastermind" Arthur could only offer a little bear shrug emoji: They kept coming into my jungle… ah, no, they kept asking me for guidance. What could I do? I just made a small contribution.
While leading the whole team in extra training, Arthur had also successfully taught Old Flame's daughter Thunder Punch before January.
So, as it turns out, "it just clicks" is a universal biological trait.
Before learning it, this little delinquent had been full of resistance, saying things like she didn't like punching and that her mother's form was more in line with her own aesthetic.
But not long after she actually started learning, she was singing a different tune.
Now, she was throwing one Fire Punch after another, followed by a series of Thunder Punches, having the time of her life every day.
Unfortunately, Charizard can't learn Ice Punch. Otherwise, she would have completed the Farmer's Three Punches.
To this, Aaron's Garchomp gave a firm thumbs-up!
You practice your punches on me every damn time, and you still want to learn the doubly super-effective Ice Punch? Die!
Time passed smoothly until mid-January, when the traditional Kubfu Alliance holiday, the Spring Festival, arrived.
After this festival, the new season would begin in early February.
During the holiday, Arthur, in a rare display of humanity, paused training for a few days, giving the Pokémon a short break.
But who would have thought that during this break, one of the Pokémon would get into trouble again?
This time, the one causing a ruckus was Little Eevee.
When Arthur, who had been out for a meal, rushed back to the base and into the infirmary, he saw Little Eevee lying on a half-meter-long, small-sized sickbed, shivering uncontrollably.
"What happened to him?"
Arthur asked Ivy, who had been the one to call him.
But Ivy shook her head.
"I don't know either. The doctor said the energy in his body suddenly went haywire. I don't know if he ate something he shouldn't have. When I found him, he had already randomly used his skills and broken a lot of the base's facilities. Then he just collapsed from exhaustion."
Beside the bed, the Vulpix who had been watching over Little Eevee whimpered a couple of times, adding a few details, but the general course of events was the same.
Ever since Arthur had come to Starlight and Frost, Little Eevee had been living in what felt like the Garden of Eden, running off to Ivy's place every day to steal away her little Vulpix.
Every day was a whirlwind of romance, under the flowers and the moon, as happy as a god.
But it seemed that today, their joy had turned to sorrow.
With a grave expression, Arthur felt Little Eevee's body, but he couldn't find anything wrong.
He did know some battlefield first aid and bandaging, but he was at a loss when it came to proper medicine. He couldn't see any problems.
A little while later, the doctor returned.
Everyone immediately asked, "Doctor, how is the little guy?"
The doctor looked at Arthur with a serious expression.
"Are you this Eevee's trainer? You may need to make a choice."
Everyone present, both human and Pokémon, was terrified.
Was it that serious?!
Bianca covered her mouth, her eyes immediately turning red.
Ivy quickly glanced at her own anxious Vulpix, composed herself, and said to Arthur with a solemn expression:
"Don't worry about the cost. We'll save him, no matter how much it is! I can lend you more. You already owe me enough as it is."
Although her words sounded a bit ambiguous, now was not the time for such romantic thoughts.
Arthur nodded with a heavy, serious expression and looked at the doctor.
But before he could speak, the doctor cut them off with a strange look.
"No, what are you guys talking about? I mean, you need to choose which direction you want this little Eevee to evolve in."
"...Huh?"
Even someone as mentally tough as Arthur was completely thrown by this sudden turn of events. It took him a long moment to regain his composure.
"Doctor, are you saying… he's just evolving?"
Ivy and Bianca both had speechless expressions.
Wait, it's just an evolution. Don't talk about it like it's a life-or-death situation, doctor! That's really scary, you know?!
The doctor coughed, perhaps realizing that he had inadvertently traumatized the patient's fragile family members.
"Ahem, yes and no. This young Eevee is indeed about to evolve, but its situation is a bit complicated. Have you ever heard of the Abby Phenomenon?"
Arthur shook his head.
He didn't think that term existed two hundred years ago.
That wasn't surprising. Human technology and the exploration of Pokémon's mysteries were constantly progressing. Just as two hundred years ago, people didn't know that the move Curse had a completely different effect when used by non-Ghost-type Pokémon.
Ivy, however, was more of a scholar. Hearing this, she looked thoughtful.
"I remember Abby was the name of an Eevee, right? Wait! Wasn't he… the first Eevee ever observed by humans that could evolve into multiple forms at once?"
"That's right," the doctor said with a nod.
"Later, after long-term scientific research, it was determined that this was not just an isolated case! Many Eevee have this potential. In their youth, they can simultaneously evolve in up to three directions. However, after they reach a certain age, this unstable ability disappears, and their bodies will eventually stabilize into one of the evolutionary forms, no longer changing. Because Abby was the first Eevee observed by humans to have this ability, this phenomenon was later named the Abby Phenomenon."
After the doctor finished, Arthur and the two sisters were completely stunned!
