Ch. 196
Volume 3, Chapter 15~Better to Kill a Thousand By Mistake Than Let One Go
“Still good?”
Teresa held her forehead, and looking up, her eyes met Yimi's gaze. She shook her head, signaling that she was fine, but her current appearance, drenched in sweat, spirit listless, and her lively eyes also looking somewhat vacant, in no way resemble someone unaffected.
Teresa's state was indeed poor. The previous memory was like having her head pried open and forcefully stuffed, making her brain ache painfully. She still felt dizzy and lightheaded, and was immersed in this abruptly appearing memory.
What made her feel surprised and puzzled was that she seemed to be emotionally affected by this unfamiliar memory.
She didn't understand. She wasn't the real Teresa. Even if these memories were true, why would she feel empathy for them?
Logically speaking, her intuitive feeling should just be viewing this memory from an outsider's perspective. She wasn't the protagonist of this memory, so she naturally shouldn't have direct feelings about it.
Or was it that this memory was so heavy that even she, an outsider, could feel empathy?
These memories were merely external things; her soul should instinctively reject these foreign memories. Yet, regarding these memories that appeared out of thin air in her mind, she didn't feel any sense of incongruity, just as if these were originally her memories, and she was only now retrieving them little by little.
Who was that person in the memory?
Teresa vaguely remembered the silver-haired girl who was about the same height as Yimi. In stark contrast to her pure silver hair was her slightly dim, dark skin and her young and delicate appearance, which seemed to be around the same age as Yimi.
However, the Elf Tribe wasn't a race whose age could be distinguished by appearance. In terms of appearance, she was the same type as Yimi, both being legal lolis who looked very young.
Teresa couldn't tell if she had awakened or not. After all, there was still a portion within the Elf Tribe whose appearance didn't change after awakening. Yimi wasn't a Divine Princess, so there was no issue of awakening. It was normal for a Divine Princess family to have a Divine Child, but for a Divine Child family to have a Divine Princess, aside from genetic mutation, the only possibility was likely literally having a green hat on their head (infidelity).
Teresa had seen that silver-haired, wheat-skinned loli before. When she unleashed Sacred Oblivion in Ruglian's Gluttony Forest, she had also seen this girl.
It wasn't a coincidence; this silver-haired loli knew the original Teresa.
No, it might not have been just a simple acquaintance. Their relationship was deep, which could be judged from the words the silver-haired girl spoke. The two might have been childhood friends who grew up together, and there was also a rather thought-provoking relationship between them.
As for why the two later became enemies, Teresa had no idea. These were, in the end, messes left behind by the original Teresa, which she had to clean up.
“Is this why you guided me to the Empire?” Teresa touched her hair ornament and murmured softly to herself.
Could she initially understand her mission as being responsible for cleaning up the pile of messes created by the original owner?
The previous memory should have occurred over four hundred years ago, which was when the Demon Race army invaded the Elf Forest. This meant that the silver-haired girl and the original Teresa were of the same generation.
Where was she now? Was she still alive?
For some reason, Teresa was somewhat urgently concerned about these questions.
With a feeling of understanding, she lowered her head and saw Yimi pulling at her clothes. Teresa looked with a sense of foreboding at the distant plain outside the city. Dust rose accompanied by the gradual sound of hooves, approaching from far away.
Flags with blue backgrounds and double-headed flying eagles fluttered in the wind. On sturdy warhorses were fully armed soldiers in Imperial chainmail, galloping closer.
“It’s the reinforcements dispatched from the Imperial Capital!” The sharp-eyed citizens were the first to see the army galloping in the distance, flying the Imperial army flag. Their eyes immediately lit up, as if they had seen saviors, and they cheered.
In stark contrast, the ragged citizens remained silent. Looking at the galloping Imperial army, there was no meaning of excitement in their eyes, and it even subtly contained a trace of fear. They shrunk their bodies and moved back further. Barely clothed, they only dared to sit on the dirty floor, not daring to breathe heavily.
“Here, here! We are here!” The son of a certain Viscount's butler shouted loudly, terrified that the Imperial soldiers wouldn't notice them, and desperately waved towards them.
Seeing this, the Imperial officer leading the way gave a look to his vice-officer. The vice-officer understood, ordered two groups of cavalry to follow him, circled around, and completely surrounded the people gathered outside the city.
“Hey, hey, you are the reinforcements dispatched from the Imperial Capital, right? You came just in time! Those cultists are now rampaging through the city, setting fires and slaughtering. My father is still trapped in the inner city. Hurry and go save him!” The butler's son, dressed like a person, seemed to genuinely believe he had authority and the right to speak, and issued orders to the Imperial officer.
Teresa, who had mostly recovered, shook her head from the side.
This silly son of a landlord's family was truly too well protected in his ivory tower.
Teresa had basically no hope for the integrity of the Imperial army. If the Imperial soldiers defending outside were so arrogant and domineering, how much better could the troops stationed locally be?
There was no such thing as a people's army in this异世界 (Otherworld). Since ancient times, there has been a saying: bandits comb through, soldiers rake through.
What kind of military discipline could these bandits wearing army badges have, who blocked roads at various checkpoints, collected money and let people pass, and if they didn't get money, they labeled people as cultists and arrested them? It would already be a blessing from heaven if they didn't do anything outrageous and harmful.
“Who are you?” The Imperial officer dismounted, his tall figure looking down at the silly son of the landlord's family. His nostrils were almost pointed towards the sky.
“Who else could we be? Of course, we are residents of Kanz City!” Unexpectedly, the attitude of the reinforcements from the Imperial Capital towards him upon first meeting was like this. The butler's young master was stunned for a moment.
“Heh, residents?” The Imperial officer's condescending gaze swept over everyone present. “You say you are Imperial citizens of Kanz City, what evidence do you have? How can I be sure you are lawful citizens and not bandits trying to take advantage of Kanz City's disaster to loot?”
“Us?... Sir Officer, how could we be bandits?? We don't even have a weapon on us.” The butler's young master quickly explained.
“Then, what is this gold-haired woman holding in her hand?” The Imperial officer narrowed his eyes, looking at Teresa, who was holding a longbow. The moment he saw her face, a flicker of amazement crossed his eyes.
Tsk, it was rare for such a beautiful wild flower to grow in this remote place.
“Her? Sir Officer, you're mistaken. She's not with us. At first, we thought she was the Imperial Capital's reinforcement, but she's not at all. She's not even a resident of this city! Maybe she's a bandit from nearby!” The butler's son quickly distanced himself from Teresa.
“Truly ugly,” Yimi glanced at this ungrateful person and muttered softly.
The Imperial officer's gaze fell on Teresa, clearly expecting her to give an account and explanation.
“Sir Officer, we are from Coleman Academy.” Saying this, Teresa took out her identification black card. “We are students from there. We happened to be passing by and saw thick black smoke in the city, so we chose to enter the city to rescue people.”
“You are students from Coleman Academy??” The Imperial officer frowned. After hearing that this girl was a student from Coleman Academy, the look in his eyes when he looked at Teresa clearly restrained quite a bit.
“Yes, both of us are.”
“Besides the two of you, are there any other students from Coleman Academy?”
“I think not. Only the two of us traveled together this time.”
“What are you doing in the Empire?” The Imperial officer asked, feigning nonchalance.
“The academy is on vacation. We're here for tourism.”
“Well, as you can see, this is not a good place for tourism.”
“The rest will be taken over by our Imperial army. There's nothing more for you Coleman people here. You should leave,” the officer said coldly, with a very poor attitude.
“These citizens?”
“We will handle them. This is our Empire's internal matter. We don't need you outsiders to manage it.” The officer seemed very unwilling for Teresa and Yimi to stay here and impede them.
Hearing this, Teresa didn't stay any longer. She glanced at the few trembling citizens, then at the nearly extinguished flames of war in the city, and pulled Yimi away.
As for Yimi, she had wanted to leave long ago. After witnessing the actions of these humans, her inner impression of humanity was only contempt. She didn't want to waste any more time with these people.
It was also reasonable to leave this matter to the Imperial soldiers. They were just tourists. To avoid suspicion, it was better not to get too deeply involved.
Although the military discipline of the army in this Otherworld was questionable, they were still the Imperial Capital's army after all. The troops directly under the Emperor should have higher standards than ordinary armies. And since they were people of the same nation, presumably, they wouldn't do anything too outrageous. Let them take over.
“Let's go. We'll enter the city.” After seeing the two walk away, the Imperial officer waved his hand and ordered his troops to enter the city.
“Sir Officer, you just let them go?” The butler's son was somewhat disbelieving. “They are both suspicious outsiders. Shouldn't you detain and interrogate them first?”
The officer stood with his hands behind his back and glanced at the butler's son, saying nothing.
“Ah, sorry, sorry, I spoke too much. Then I won't disturb everyone from executing the cultists...” Sensing the officer's displeasure, the butler's son quickly shrunk back.
“Bring them in too.”
“Understood.”
“Eh eh? No, Sir Officer, why do we also have to enter the city?” The butler's son, who was being escorted into the city by two soldiers, looked bewildered.
“This is your home. You must be more familiar with it than us,” the vice-officer chuckled. “Help us find the way. We'll help you deal with the cultists causing trouble in the city right away.”
“Oh, oh.” The butler's son nodded foolishly, but he just felt that something wasn't right.
“Everyone, rest assured. We are troops belonging to the Emperor, acting under orders. We will eliminate the cultist settlement in Kanz City at all costs,” the Imperial officer announced solemnly after entering the city.
Hearing these words, the citizens who were still somewhat restless gradually let down their guard.
The Imperial officer brought them into the city, and they were still worried about what might happen. Now it seemed they had worried for nothing.
This was their own army.
“However, before that, I need to ask everyone for a favor,” the Imperial officer said expressionlessly.
“We don't know the way in the inner city. Please trouble yourselves to guide us and take us to the inner city so that we can help you round up all the cultists.”
“Everyone, relax. I guarantee with my character that with me here, the cultists absolutely cannot harm you in the slightest.”
Hearing the officer's deep voice guarantee, the people present were completely relaxed and didn't doubt him, all stepping forward to walk at the front of the troops.
“...”
The officer gave a look to the vice-officer beside him. The latter nodded, indicating he understood, then turned around and raised his hand.
The front row of Lancers knelt down, revealing the archers in the back who had pulled their bowstrings taut.
The vice-officer's raised hand fell, and with his movement, hundreds of arrows shot out.
The citizens who heard the commotion suddenly turned around and were engulfed by the overwhelming rain of arrows. Before they could react, they were pierced by thousands of arrows and fell in a pool of blood.
“Why...?” Those who hadn't immediately stopped breathing let out an unwilling question in a dying voice.
“By order of the Emperor, completely eliminate the cultists in Kanz City and their hideouts,” the Imperial officer watched all this with a cold face, enunciating each word. “And how would I know if there weren't any cultists hiding among you, waiting for an opportunity? The Empire cannot afford this risk.”
“From the moment the cultist rebellion erupted in Kanz City, all of you were marked with the sign of 'being suspected'.”
“For the safety of the Empire, please rest in peace.”
“Innocent citizens, Carreto and the Empire will not forget the contributions you have made.” Saying this, the officer made a gesture of prayer.
“Sir, no one was left alive.” After ordering the Lancers to use their weapons one by one for 'corpse inspection', the vice-officer reported.
“Listen carefully, a cultist rebellion erupted in Kanz City, causing disaster in the area. This rebellion resulted in no survivors in the entire city except for the City Lord's family.”
“The City Lord's family fought bloody battles and fought to the last moment to defend Kanz City. They should be awarded honors and titles.”
“And also, other cities and places should take this as a warning. Anyone who does not believe in Carreto may be a cult spy. Based on this case of city massacre, it is hoped that all lords will strengthen the supervision of the people within their territories.” Solemnly giving a conclusion to this rebellion that had settled, the officer raised the longsword in his hand.
“Now it's time for us to work. Send those monsters in the city back to their hometown!”
The soldiers, hearing the order, moved swiftly. Pikemen and Shield Soldiers walked at the front, archers in the back, mages on the flanks. The officer, as a Divine Princess, led this well-trained Imperial Capital army straight to the mansion.
The cultist rebellion in Kanz City would end soon. The conclusions given in the false reports were naturally guided.
However, no one would speak out against this, because no one would know the truth.
Even if there were, they would be outnumbered and powerless. The Empire could completely handle it as rumor.
Except for the nobles, better to kill a thousand by mistake than let one go.
