The Most Satisfied Reincarnate

Chapter 53: Coincidence?

"Hmm? Did I say something wrong?" Desmond wondered, his brow furrowing in puzzlement.

However, his confusion swiftly transformed into a more serious demeanor as the cacophony of screams from the Guild building grew louder. Scanning the crowd, he noticed the envious glances and familiar stares akin to those he had received when descending from the Guild's top floor. Yet, his attention was abruptly diverted by a notification that appeared, blocking his view.

[Detected killing intent around host]

Too many potential culprits, this will be challenging for me to handle.

"Annie, Laura, keep moving, but avoid going straight to our house," Desmond instructed his maids, his voice laced with urgency.

Laura appeared perplexed. "But young master, isn't our house—"

Desmond interrupted her swiftly. "Just follow my orders!"

Laura and Annie nodded in unison, their expressions reflecting their determination. "Yes, young master."

The maids had unknowingly pushed Desmond's patience to its limits, momentarily forgetting the advice of the senior maid who always stressed the importance of obeying Desmond's directives. Fortunately, this incident occurred outside their home; otherwise, the consequences could have been dire.

...

After repeatedly navigating through the same route, Desmond eventually sensed that his pursuer had realized their cover was blown. Despite leveraging the assistance of the system, Desmond still couldn't discern the identity of the one tailing him. Could there be supernatural entities in this world? It seemed highly improbable, even...

A sudden realization struck Desmond, prompting him to modify his search parameters within the system, now considering non-human entities. Almost instantaneously, an energy surged through the air, homing in on the stalker's presence.

[System: Target acquired]

[Analyzing...]

[System: Current appearance of the target is that of a four-legged creature]

Four legs? A dog, perhaps?

"Annie, Laura, let's find out if there's a four-legged admirer following us," Laura inquired, her brows furrowed in confusion.

"Four legs?" Laura's words triggered a memory, prompting her to recall something. "Ah, isn't there a dog that people always greet when we pass by, Annie?"

Laura's remark sent a shiver down the stalker's spine, causing them to freeze and cease their pursuit.

"Idiot, damn it!" Desmond cursed at Laura, his frustration evident, before turning his attention to Annie. "Annie, pursue that dog until you can catch it!"

"Yes, young master!" With a determined nod, Annie departed, casting a fleeting disappointed glance at Laura.

Observing this exchange, Laura lowered her head in embarrassment, while continuing to assist Desmond in his walk.

...

In the meantime, the dog in question immediately darted away as soon as he spotted the blonde-haired maid approaching. He swiftly maneuvered through narrow passages and drainage routes, attempting to shake off his pursuer. However, to his dismay, the maid persisted, trailing behind with an unyielding expression that seemed to require minimal effort.

Reluctantly, the dog led the way down a small alley, where the dwellings of the enslaved were nestled.

...

Meanwhile, with Annie diligently chasing after the enigmatic dog, Desmond felt a sense of relief wash over him. He glanced at his bandaged body, concealed only by a cloak, and contemplated the long journey that lay ahead, given their sluggish pace and current physical condition. Searching the surroundings, Desmond's eyes alighted upon a clothing store that caught his attention.

"Stop, Laura, let's head to that shop," he tried to convey his intention by repeatedly tilting his head in the direction of the clothing store.

"Laura, Laura, Laura," Desmond called her name several times, yet Laura continued to walk, prompting him to raise his voice in frustration. "Laura!!"

Startled by her master's outburst, Laura snapped out of her daze and halted in her tracks. She turned around, only to be met with Desmond's irate gaze. "Y-yes... young master?" She attempted to speak calmly, but her trembling voice betrayed her fear.

Initially, Laura's sole intention was to please her young master, but now the situation had taken an unexpected turn. "Didn't you hear what I said earlier? Go to that shop," Desmond stated, recognizing the distinction between reprimanding a subordinate and bullying them.

Observing Laura's exaggerated reaction, he deduced that her state of mind was not in the best condition. Therefore, he issued the order once again, this time in a more neutral tone.

"Yes... yes, young master," Laura nodded repeatedly, inadvertently causing Desmond's body to mimic the nod as if they both shared mutual respect. This sight amused the onlookers, who couldn't help but chuckle at the peculiar scene. While Desmond felt a slight annoyance, he ultimately accepted it, attributing his subordinate's current mentality to his own misjudgment.

Upon entering the clothing shop, the tinkling sound of the doorbell signaled the arrival of two new visitors. All eyes turned towards the entrance, where a woman could be seen carrying or assisting a young child, both adorned in robes.

Desmond couldn't help but be mesmerized by the interior design of the shop. It bore a striking resemblance to modern establishments, with clothes elegantly displayed and hung below, facilitating easy browsing for customers.

However, one notable difference set it apart from contemporary shops—the clothes were suspended on rotating circles, as opposed to being hung on metal poles. Each circle showcased a distinct category of garments, with an energy stone positioned at the center, adding a touch of enchantment.

Laura, who had never set foot in a clothing shop before, shared in Desmond's amazement. She felt a surge of excitement, eager to peruse the array of clothing, but she understood that her duty today was not for personal shopping.

In the society of the Saint World, only the affluent had the privilege of entering clothing shops. Those who couldn't afford such luxuries typically purchased garments from markets located in the heart of the city, and Laura belonged to that category.

As Desmond concluded his observation of the shop's layout, his gaze fell upon a familiar face, prompting him to instinctively call out the person's name. "Elizabeth?"

Elizabeth, who was in the midst of selecting clothes from one of the rotating dress circles, heard her name being uttered and turned towards the source of the voice. Her eyes met those of a child around her age, cloaked in robes. "Yes, who are you?"

Drawing closer, Desmond noticed Elizabeth's slight retreat, and he observed the shop guards preparing to wield their weapons, anticipating a potential threat to her safety. It dawned on him that their apprehension stemmed from his veiled appearance, causing a misunderstanding to ensue.
