Chapter 330: Abandoned Village
As Alice caught sight of the familiar figure in the distance, her face instantly lit up with joy. However, her elation swiftly faded when she noticed two ladies standing behind her brother. Her expression shifted from happiness to indifference, her gaze turning cold as she surveyed them.
"Who are they?" Alice observed her brother employing a spell to heal one of the ladies. Glancing around, she realized they were standing amidst vast meadows, stretching as far as the eye could see.
"Greetings, young lady," the two women spoke with awkwardness, their smiles tinged with bitterness, as they faced Alice's hostile gaze. Laura, who had regained some strength, also greeted Alice, gracefully lifting her skirt and bowing her head.
Bathed in the moon's radiant glow, Alice stood, her long hair fluttering in harmony with the silver light. As she crossed her arms over her chest, her alluring fragrance wafted through the air, enhancing her elegant beauty. A closer look revealed her stunning allure, captivating both Laura and Annie for a fleeting moment.
While they were aware of their young master's elder sister's existence, little did they expect her to possess the same captivating charm as him. They were a picture-perfect couple, yet their unfortunate circumstance was being siblings.
Alice's expression gradually softened as she witnessed the deferential attitude of the two ladies. However, she remained silent, her eyes scanning their graceful figures.
"Are you alright, sister?" Desmond's voice broke the tense and intense exchange, his attention shifting away from the girls. He cared little for their issues, as their priority was to reach a safe haven.
He reached out and gently held Alice's hand, his palm tenderly caressing her cheek as he assessed her well-being. In an instant, Alice's cold facade melted away, and she simply nodded, leaning into his touch, awaiting the healing process.
"Alright, we're good now. Let's move!" Desmond declared, tugging Alice along. There was no time for reunions or leisurely conversations after their prolonged separation.
They sprinted at full speed, causing Alice, who initially harbored doubts, to suddenly remember her forgotten memories. Desmond consulted the map, having already instructed the system to scan the surroundings, and discovered a small village not far from their current location.
"Sister, refrain from using your magic, or we'll draw unwanted attention," Desmond cautioned. However, as his focus returned to the path ahead, a chilling sensation washed over him, and he caught Alice on the brink of activating her spell.
Unlike him, who had cast a one-time healing spell, Alice seemed intent on utilizing a continuous spell to alleviate the strain on her feet during the run.
"I apologize, brother," Alice's obedience in this moment reminded him of the sister he once knew, despite her stark transformation in other aspects, which had either matured or taken a contrasting path from her former self.
Alice continued to run, clearly unaccustomed to the physical exertion as most of her time had been devoted to studying and mastering spells. While the academy did offer physical training classes, she seldom attended.
Meanwhile, Laura and Annie had fully recovered from their injuries. Concerned for their young lady's exhaustion, they extended a helping hand, only to be gently turned away.
"I don't want to burden anyone," Alice replied in a low tone. The girls lagged slightly behind while Desmond led the way, their voices carried by the wind. Despite the disturbance, Annie and Laura managed to hear her words, given their proximity.
Alice cast a discerning gaze at the two beautiful maids, realizing that their condition upon awakening was no better than her own. Their faces had paled, and their labored breaths resonated, evidence of their strenuous efforts to keep up with the pace.
Freshly awakened, Alice possessed boundless stamina. It would be a disappointment for her if she couldn't endure the run compared to these maids. Determined, she pushed herself to keep going.
Meanwhile, Desmond had little time to spare, as his attention was consumed by the red dots on the map rapidly approaching their location. He contemplated the situation, realizing that killing and silencing their pursuers would only draw more attention to their whereabouts. Moreover, it might allow the enemy to predict their destination. He muttered, analyzing the predicament.
Felix and his other subordinates were clever and adept at evading most patrols. Perhaps it was due to their collective intelligence, or maybe because they comprised a team of men, unlike Desmond who was burdened with the responsibility of managing three challenging girls.
Suddenly, the sound of something falling reached their ears, causing Desmond to look back. Laura had collapsed to the ground, her breathing weak as she struggled to remain conscious. "Young master..." she uttered weakly. Alice and Annie quickly rushed to her aid, helping her to her feet, her legs trembling as she could barely keep her eyes open.
Desmond halted his stride, glancing at the map before shifting his gaze to the exhausted Laura. "Let me carry her," he declared, eliciting wide-eyed expressions from the girls. With a determined expression, he lifted Laura onto his back, just as he had done with his sister before.
An air of silence enveloped the group as Alice occasionally cast scrutinizing glances at Laura and Annie.
...
After several minutes of walking, a mist-shrouded village emerged, its gloomy and lush surroundings coming into view. The village appeared desolate, positioned on the border between the North Kingdom and the outer territory infested with beasts.
Alice's grip on her brother's clothes tightened as fear trickled into her heart. Laura, now unconscious, wore a serene smile on her face. Whether she had fainted due to sheer happiness or was simply having a pleasant dream remained unknown.
"System, scan the area," Alice requested.
[Starting to scan the area...]
Desmond, on the other hand, frowned as he observed the village's state. He wasn't foolish enough to enter a place with such an eerie ambiance, even considering their current predicament of being pursued by soldiers.
As he surveyed the mist enshrouding the village, with distant howls reaching their ears, a flurry of thoughts flooded his mind. What if a curse had been placed on anyone who stepped foot in this village? What if they were suddenly transported to another dimension? What if they fell victim to hypnotic illusions? Countless scenarios from the novels he had read raced through his thoughts.

The constant stream of notifications disrupted his view until the system automatically condensed them into a single panel. Desmond meticulously read each notification, his furrowed brow becoming more pronounced.
"What is all this? Why is there so much peculiarity in this world?" he pondered. However, upon realizing that no spells had been detected, a sense of relief washed over him. It was far easier to confront a tangible being than to contend with mysterious spells and enchantments.
"System used my stats as a measurement and attempted to simulate the percentage if I entered," Desmond commanded. The system promptly responded by opening his skills window, stats window, and automatically absorbing and dispersing his energy.
He observed the clash of ripples between his energy and the mist enveloping the village, keeping his attention fully fixated on the system's process while occasionally checking on the condition of the girls.
