The Most Satisfied Reincarnate

Chapter 308: Suspicious Higher Up

With a face full of smiles, Edison approached Desmond, his eyes silently scanning him from top to toe, taking in every detail. He maintained his polite demeanor as he greeted the young master, "Hello, young master Desmond."

Desmond returned his gaze, his eyes fixed on Edison for a moment before he spoke, curiosity tinged in his voice, "Hello. Have we met before?"

As he pondered why so many people seemed to know his identity, Desmond couldn't help but wonder if they believed they could befriend him simply by knowing his name. He activated his system to gather more information.

"His talent is not bad," Desmond thought inwardly, acknowledging Edison's abilities as he continued to gaze at him, his expression troubled.

"No, we haven't met before. But we can certainly be friends. My name is Edison, and I come from the esteemed Malveint Family," Edison replied, his tone laced with a trace of arrogance.

Desmond, as usual, regarded him with the fondness one would show a child seeking approval. He paid little mind to Edison's attitude, but what bothered him most was the peculiar intensity in his gaze. Edison's eyes wandered, taking in Desmond's attire and the people surrounding them.

Suddenly, Edison's eyes flickered upon noticing a black-haired girl who was observing their conversation. The smile on his face gradually faded, replaced by a sly smirk. "Young master Desmond certainly knows how to catch a girl's attention," Edison remarked, his gaze fixed on the alluring beauty standing behind Desmond.

However, his gaze quickly shifted back to Desmond, now laden with hidden meaning. "She's just a stranger," Desmond calmly replied, narrowing his eyes at Edison while emanating an unmistakable aura.

Although Desmond held a higher status, much like the Matson and other young elites, he had never interacted with anyone since arriving in the city, nor had he attended any banquets hosted by prominent families. He hadn't offended anyone of note, yet this young man seemed to deliberately seek trouble with him.

Unconsciously, Edison took a step back, his smile already vanished, replaced by a gloomy expression upon witnessing Desmond's stern demeanor. "What is the meaning of this, young master Desmond?" he asked, bewildered.

The crowd stood in shock, their attention captured by the sudden shift in atmosphere. Only individuals like Gregory and Fin observed the scene with keen interest, their excitement burning bright.

"What is he playing at?" one of the onlookers whispered in bewilderment, sensing the fierce aura emanating from Edison.

"Has he lost his mind? He just offended the Malveint Family, for crying out loud!" the other students murmured, stunned by Desmond's seemingly unwarranted rudeness. If not madness, then what could explain his behavior?

Ah, I see. That explains the discomfort in his gaze, Desmond thought, his eyes still fixed on Edison. "No offense, my friend. It's just that I don't care for you. Not a single part of you, from your attire and face down to your false attitude."

Desmond's black dragon aura remained suppressed, yet his power, derived solely from his swordsmanship skills and his immense energy capacity, was enough to instill fear in the other party.

As if responding to his suppressed power, a natural energy akin to a colossal wave began to gather around Desmond. Simultaneously, a chilling sensation swept across the area, leaving everyone on edge.

As the students felt the weight of the pressure, memories flooded back to the moment when their bodies had frozen during the beginning of the test. They couldn't believe that Desmond, the same person responsible for freezing the entire island, stood before them. Unconsciously, they distanced themselves from him, their bodies reacting to the aura emanating from him.

"Hey," Clark spoke up, his gaze fixed on Desmond. His glare held a mixture of concern and accusation. He glanced briefly at Edison before returning his attention to Desmond. "Are you trying to bully the weak?"

Fear coursed through the students, rendering them silent. However, the tense atmosphere didn't last long before their fear gave way to amusement. Their faces turned red as they struggled to hold back their laughter.

"Pfft."

"Hahaha."

Soon enough, the crowd erupted in laughter. They couldn't fathom the irony—Edison had previously mocked Clark to the point where Clark chose to ignore it, and now the tables had turned, leaving Edison as the subject of ridicule.

Just as the laughter filled the air, Jessy returned with a group of white-robed individuals. She looked bewildered by the scene but soon regained her composure, clapping her hands to gain attention.

"Times up, young people. Line up one by one on my right side," Jessy announced.

The students, forced to stifle their laughter, complied. Edison's face darkened as he walked toward the small portal at the end of the narrowed path. He cast a parting glance at Clark, committing his face to memory.

Meanwhile, Desmond watched the events unfold with his eyes slightly widened, perplexed by the sudden turn of events. "What the hell happened?" he muttered inwardly, finding it hard to believe Clark's intervention. Was he trying to gain Desmond's favor? If not, why would he involve himself in Edison's problem?

Observing the expressions on the other students' faces, it seemed that Desmond was the only one unaware of the conflict between Edison and Clark.

When Clark's turn came to walk through the portal, he winked at Elizabeth before giving Desmond a pointed glare.

"Why are kids nowadays always looking for trouble?" Desmond wondered aloud, more interested in the dynamics among the other young elites. He noticed the gloomy expressions of Matson and Gibson. On the other hand, the princess and the city lord's daughter appeared unperturbed. Diana, however, seemed to be constantly mumbling to herself while eyeing the academy personnel.

As time passed, only Desmond and the black-haired girl remained, as was often the case. But unlike before, Desmond noticed that the girl intentionally stepped into the portal. He stole a glance at the academy personnel, who merely nodded in response.

"She's truly special. Is this the difference having a backer makes?" Desmond contemplated, starting to piece together who her influential supporter might be.

Shaking his head, Desmond prepared to step onto the path, only to find himself surrounded by the white-robed individuals and Jessy.

"Hold up, young man. Unlike the others, the higher-ups have decided to prevent you from participating in this battle," Jessy spoke, her hands resting gently on Desmond's shoulders as she regarded him with an enigmatic gaze.

Though she remained uncertain about what made the higher-ups intervene in the academy's procedures on behalf of this young man, she was surprised to see his calm demeanor. He appeared as serene as a tranquil pond, knowing they posed no harm to him. "Then how should I pass this test?" Desmond inquired, his gaze shifting to the individuals surrounding him.

Most emitted an energy equivalent to that of a typical 1st-class wizard or witch. However, unlike the others, their energy felt purer and more potent, as if they had reached the pinnacle of 1st-class power but couldn't advance further to become master wizards or witches.

"Simply follow us. We will accompany you to the location where our higher-ups wish to meet you privately," Jessy explained, her voice carrying a weight similar to that of his mother's.
