A formidable notification materialized before him, momentarily obscuring his view. However, the system swiftly organized the notification, assimilating it into a single group.

Unlike when he absorbed the essence of beasts and shapeshifters, the soldiers and civilians possessed limited energy capacity, allowing for faster absorption.

Threads of ethereal energy uncoiled from the lifeless bodies, gliding toward Desmond, who was seated on the ground. His eyes remained open, fixated on the map displayed in the corner of his vision.

Not far from his position, Felix wore a conflicted expression as he surveyed the grim aftermath of his spell—a multitude of fallen soldiers and civilians. "Young master..." he uttered, shuddering involuntarily at Desmond's indifferent and icy demeanor.

However, his anxiety was short-lived as he promptly shattered the roof, descending into the tavern. Simultaneously, Laura, concealed in a corner, commenced an incantation.

Her delicate, slender hands began to gather the ambient natural energy. Her countenance bore a solemn expression as she meticulously observed the process. After several moments elapsed, her eyes brimmed with determination, fixed on the oncoming assailants.

"Basic Spell: Rapid Attack!" she bellowed, propelling the amassed energy from her palms towards the encroaching foes, leaving behind faint traces of swirling dust.

*crack*

A cacophony of shattering echoed as the attackers' bodies succumbed to the spell's impact, freezing them in place while their eyes dimmed slowly.

*sprout*

Lifeless forms tumbled to the ground, accompanied by searing heat and the acrid stench of scorched flesh.

Amidst the carnage, flickering flames materialized in the tenuous atmosphere above their lifeless heads, interconnecting through the perforations in their skulls.

The fire consumed their eyes, seared their skin, and gradually spread throughout their bodies, reducing them to lifeless husks that emanated a repugnant odor.

Observing the lifeless adversaries, Laura's guard waned as she settled on the ground, her knees drawn close to her chest. With a long exhale, she released the residual energy from her being, resembling a gust of hot breath escaping her lips.

Her large yellow-green eyes flickered toward the corpses, betraying a trace of fear. Yet, it was fleeting, quickly replaced by a gaze encompassing her surroundings, her furrowed brows easing.

"At last, I have proven my worth to the young master," she mused, her crimson lips curling into a blend of untamed and jubilant smiles.

Her gaze shifted to Annie, noting the frigid countenance and the dagger firmly grasped in her hands, thrusting into one of the remaining foes still untouched by Laura's spell.

Annie's gaze met Laura's, but her expression paled, and she urgently called out, "Behind you!" Her attempt to move forward was impeded by the scattered corpses, causing her to stumble.

Meanwhile, just outside the tavern, Desmond completed the absorption process, his gaze alight with satisfaction as he beheld his enhanced statistics.

"Good. Even though I obtained this amount from just a handful of individuals, it's still a significant gain," Desmond mused. Not only had his energy been replenished, but his attributes had also experienced a modest boost.

As he surveyed his surroundings, an abrupt pang of agony coursed through his mind, assaulting him with a barrage of unfamiliar memories.

To alleviate the torment, Desmond pressed both palms against his temples, causing him to crouch down on the ground. His complexion grew pallid, and his eyes clenched shut as a continuous stream of images unfolded in his mind.

[WARNING!! The host's consciousness is under assault by the memories of the people...]

[Attempting to employ host energy to resolve the issue...]

[The attempt has failed!]

[Initiating Defense mode...]

"No, I just need to endure a little longer," Desmond whispered to himself inwardly.

In that moment, he found himself immersed in these foreign memories, each one bearing a darkness that left an indelible mark. Among them, he witnessed a man betrayed by his wife, while others mourned the loss of their children devoured by beasts.

The bleakest recollection involved an individual gouging out their own eye and consuming it to survive in a perilous forest teeming with ravenous creatures.

Each memory bore its own weight, ranging from wives being violated to children being sold into slavery, subjected to the whims of the affluent to sustain their families.

Desmond's emotions vacillated between seething wrath and bitter resentment, at times cursing both the world and the gods. These tumultuous emotions yearned to seize control of his body, to unleash their pent-up fury.

Though Desmond had grown accustomed to such experiences in his past, allowing these overwhelming emotions to inundate a human brain could trigger an emotional explosion or even lead to brain damage.

The system was rendered impotent as he had deactivated the defense mode. As he neared his breaking point, a vision of the black dragon, his last beacon of hope, materialized in his mind, devouring the surging emotions and restoring his equilibrium.

"HA!" Desmond exclaimed, his eyes snapping open. He found himself curled up in the middle of the road, his garments drenched in perspiration.

Traces of deep palm imprints marred the broken paving beneath him, remnants of his valiant struggle to retain control. His pounding heart gradually subsided, returning to its normal rhythm, while his gaze regained its focus. Rising to his feet, he brushed off his attire, endeavoring to regain his balance after the disorienting ordeal.

"Huff," Desmond exhaled a deep breath, his voice laced with a hint of trepidation. "That was a perilous acquisition. If it weren't for my bloodline, I might have succumbed to madness." His eyes fell upon the frozen tableau of the glacier, its icy grip still ensnaring the lifeless bodies.

With a determined stride, Desmond redirected his attention to the opulent tavern, making his way towards its entrance. "Now, let's see how those individuals are faring."

However, as Desmond pushed open the heavy tavern door, he was taken aback, for what lay before him was nothing short of astonishing.
