Chapter 129: Heart Broken
"Oh my..." Leona was taken aback, a mix of shock and joy evident on her face. She instinctively closed her mouth, trying to conceal the beaming smile that threatened to break through.
Diana, catching her own reflection in the glass, stood frozen as the person before her was not Desmond. Instead of him, she was dumbfounded to see an exquisitely beautiful woman who seemed like she had stepped right out of a fairy tale.
*crash*
A shattering sound reverberated from behind Leona, causing her to instinctively turn towards the source. Her husband, with his mouth wide open, trembled as he pointed ahead in disbelief.
"I... I can't... believe..." Bastian stammered, his eyes widening in surprise, his voice barely audible.
*slurp*
Desmond, maintaining his composure, calmly savored his wine before redirecting his gaze towards both of his parents. "What a mess," he thought to himself, shaking his head slightly.
However, it was inevitable for Desmond to introduce this elven woman to his parents for the right reasons. Apart from her, he also had to introduce Annie and Laura, who had recently joined as household maids. As per his instructions, the senior maids had successfully sought out and recruited Laura and Annie.
Naturally, his intentions were not solely focused on receiving "special" services from the young maids. He had his own plans for them in the future.
Desmond, who had been sitting beside his father, swiftly moved to the chair in front of his mother. This sudden change in position was due to his mother unexpectedly snatching the mirror he had intended to use.
"Young master, would you like some more wine?" A delightful maid stood next to Desmond, her long ears and cream-colored hair tied neatly in a braid. She graciously leaned over, pouring wine into Desmond's glass.
With her proximity, the elf's bosom grazed against Desmond's cheek, and she offered him an innocent, sweet smile.
Leona turned around and glanced behind the mirror, only to find a fair-skinned elf with captivating features, cheerfully serving her son. A sense of motherly possessiveness surged within her. Her face twitched, and she raised an eyebrow before finally speaking. "Boy, what is the meaning of this?" Leona's voice was icy, her piercing gaze fixed upon her son.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the mirror, as Diana activated it, Clementine, who stood beside her, grew increasingly apprehensive.
The mere fact that she had asked her daughter to represent her apology further diminished her self-esteem. Seeing her daughter freeze in place, Clementine knew that she had to face the situation herself. "Let the mother do the talking," she thought, firmly gripping her daughter's shoulder, trying to break her out of her frozen state.
Frowning, she exerted a bit of strength to nudge her daughter, hoping to snap her out of it. And in that moment, Clementine herself froze, her eyes widening in surprise.
"Um... Mrs. Leona?" Clementine quickly regained her composure, her senses returning. Unlike her daughter, she swiftly composed herself and spoke up.
Desmond, feeling the intense pressure upon him, struggled to come up with a convincing excuse for his mother. However, he suddenly felt the weight lifted and noticed his mother now fixated on the mirror she held.
"Hello?" Leona, who had originally intended to interrogate her son, was distracted by a seductive female voice emanating from the mirror's reflection. Perplexed, she tilted her head and responded.
"It's really you, Mrs. Leona." In the mirrored reflection, Clementine took a deep breath before continuing, "Your beauty is just as rumored," she spoke with a subtle expression.
"Ah... that's too exaggerated." Leona found herself at a loss, awkwardly smiling as she tried to recall important figures within the kingdom.
"Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Clementine, a housewife by profession." Clementine introduced herself without divulging her husband's identity. She exuded neither arrogance nor a need to show off, as if this were an introduction between ordinary people.
"Clementine... Cle..." Leona muttered, racking her brain in an attempt to recall memories associated with the woman before her. However, no matter how many times she repeated the name, Leona couldn't conjure up a suitable memory.
"As you know, my name is Leona, the Master Witch who serves this kingdom, and this is my husband, Bastian, a loyal soldier." Leona smiled, pointing towards her husband, who also inclined his head slightly while maintaining a polite smile.
"Nice to meet you," Clementine responded politely in kind.
Initially, an awkward atmosphere hung between them due to their recent meeting and the absence of a shared topic. However, as Leona inquired about the young woman she had seen in the mirror earlier, they gradually continued conversing as if they were old friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time.
Desmond struggled to calm his racing thoughts; he was well aware that women could be unpredictable creatures, quick to form friendships but also quick to become enemies. Despite his best efforts, Desmond found it difficult to relax, especially with the elf maid beside him who seemed to be fixated on him, even as he took a sip from his drink.
"Umm..." Desmond wanted to discreetly signal the elf to return to her duties, but then he realized that he didn't even know her name, adding to his frustration.
On the other side, Bastian noticed his son's peculiar behavior. While he acknowledged the charm of the new maid, he remained a loyal and committed partner. He was simply surprised to have a demi-human living and working with their family, without any romantic or sexual desires stirring within him.
Meanwhile, Leona and Clementine seemed engrossed in their conversation, to the point where Leona eventually excused herself and left the dining room.
Leona's departure left Desmond and Bastian awkwardly looking at each other. They continued to sip their drinks while gazing out of the glass window at the bright weather outside.
"Today's weather is quite pleasant," Desmond commented.
"Indeed," Bastian replied.
*slurp*
To be honest, after a long period of not seeing each other, their conversation felt slightly strained. Desmond yearned to inquire about the skills of the swordsmen he encountered, but he hesitated, feeling that it might not be appropriate on their very first day.
Bastian, noticing his son's restless energy, wanted to praise him, but he held back, sensing that it wasn't the right time, especially in the presence of the demi-human maid.
Both father and son understood that Leona would soon return after concluding her conversation with Clementine. They anticipated a discussion together, but the reality was that she had left them, leaving them at a loss for words.
...
An hour later, Leona finally wrapped up her discussion with Clementine, the session filled with cheerful laughter and happiness.
As Leona headed back to the dining room, she found her son and husband sitting in mutual silence, not exchanging a single word. This left her speechless; she even contemplated scolding her husband for his lack of conversational skills before glancing at her son.
"Boy, that girl will also accompany you to the academy," she declared. Her conversation with Clementine had gone beyond mere small talk. Leona had learned from Clementine that Desmond had already begun preparations for the academy and had hired a few guards.
In addition, Leona took the opportunity to examine Desmond's injured hand, confirming that his earlier claims were indeed true. She also heard from Clementine that the maid had assisted in healing his hand, further solidifying her belief in her son's words. Recognizing her son's actions and the problems he had caused, Leona took it upon herself to rectify the situation and apologize to Clementine.
Upon hearing his mother's request, Desmond had anticipated it. Initially, Clementine had only asked for her daughter to accompany him, but due to the complications that had arisen, their original agreement had been nullified.
"Yes, mother," Desmond replied, realizing that his mother's persistence and his own desire for her help in teaching him certain spells left him with little choice but to accept Diana's presence on his journey to the academy. Nevertheless, it didn't bother him much. He planned to simply sit back and let the guild's mercenaries handle any obstacles that may arise.
"Good," Leona expressed her satisfaction with her obedient son. While Desmond was undoubtedly a genius, at least he still held respect for his mother. "Now, let's focus on the maid beside you."
The room's atmosphere grew tense once again. As Leona directed her gaze towards the maid elf, the maid returned her gaze and tilted her head. "Lady, would you like me to pour some wine for you?"
The maid elf had been continuously pouring wine into Desmond's glass, but upon noticing Leona's attention, she halted her actions, holding the wine bottle while approaching Leona.
Leona's expression hardened as she nodded and raised her glass. Taking a sip of her drink, she decided to test the maid elf's reaction. "Are there any other new maids apart from this demi-human?" Leona emphasized the term 'demi-human' aloud, carefully observing the maid elf's face.
To Leona's surprise, the maid elf maintained an innocent smile as she poured wine into Leona's glass.
Meanwhile, the other maids serving Bastian sensed the escalating tension in the room and realized that it would be prudent to bring Annie and Laura. One of the maids made a hand gesture to another passing maid and instructed her to fetch them.
