The Masked Legacy

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Spiritual Growth

Thorne made his way back to the mouth of the cave, deciding that since the serpent had spared him, this spot might be the safest place in the entire forest. Settling himself just inside the cave's entrance, he held the Fruit of Essence. Its smooth surface seemed to pulse with a faint glow. With a deep breath, he took a bite.

Nothing happened at first, but then his eyes widened in surprise. The taste was indescribable, a sweetness unlike anything he had ever experienced.

"This... this is divine," he muttered in awe. It was like nothing from the mortal world. Only the gods could create something this heavenly. Before he knew it, he had finished the entire fruit, savoring every last bite.

As soon as he swallowed the final piece, he felt something stir inside him, a force building within.

So, this is meant to enhance my spirituality, he thought, though it was almost like he already knew.

His body instinctively responded. He sat in a lotus position and began meditating, focusing inward. His spirituality swelled, rising higher and higher. It was like a dam had broken inside him, releasing a flood of energy that surged through his entire being.

A smooth, calming sensation washed over him, as though his body was being reshaped from within.

When he opened his eyes, he had no idea how much time had passed. Checking himself for any changes, Thorne was astonished.

His understanding of spirituality had deepened. What had once felt clumsy and awkward now flowed with clarity. If before, his use of spirituality had been akin to a baby crawling, now he felt like he was walking with purpose and control.

Spirituality was what allowed him to "see" despite his blindness, but his previous limitations—short bursts of vision that quickly drained him—had held him back.

Now, he could feel his range had increased many times over, and he could sustain his spiritual sight for much longer without mental exhaustion. The fruit had opened new doors for him, sharpening his senses and granting him far more control.

A grin spread across his face. The changes in his body were beyond anything he had hoped for. Reflecting on his journey so far—the challenges, the dangers, and now this gift—he felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

Maybe the gods hadn't abandoned him after all. Maybe, after making him blind, they were trying to make it right. Thorne thought with a scoff.

A few moments later, Thorne was making his way toward the second location.

After the transformative experience with the Fruit of Essence, he couldn't help but feel a growing sense of anticipation. The first gift had reshaped him, elevated him in ways he hadn't imagined.

His body and mind felt more in tune with the spiritual forces around him, and the world seemed sharper, more alive. He wondered what the next gift would bring, and though he had his guesses, there was something deeper—a pull, as though the gift itself was calling to him.

As he moved through the dense underbrush, his heightened senses were on high alert. The forest was quiet but alive with hidden movement. The air was thick, carrying a tension he hadn't noticed before, as if the forest itself knew that something was about to happen.

Suddenly, his senses flared. Thorne stopped in his tracks, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword. He extended his spirituality outward, probing the area.

Just as he did, he caught a sight of a ball of spirituality.

Something was lurking nearby, something dangerous.

A low growl echoed from the shadows, and within seconds, a massive beast burst from the trees. It was a Night Stalker, a creature known for its speed and stealth, cloaked in a dark mist that made it nearly impossible to track. Its razor-sharp claws glinted under the faint light that filtered through the canopy, and its eyes locked onto Thorne with murderous intent.

Thorne didn't hesitate. His sword was in his hand, and with a deep breath, he let his spirituality flow.

This time, it wasn't a chaotic surge but a controlled wave, spreading out in all directions, mapping the beast's every movement. He could "see" it now—its powerful muscles coiled, ready to strike, its breath shallow and calculated, its aura brimming with aggression.

The beast lunged, but Thorne was not slower.

With his agility, he sidestepped the attack, using a burst of spirituality to sense its trajectory before it even moved. He brought his sword down in a quick slash, but the Night Stalker twisted mid-air, avoiding the blow.

It growled in frustration, circling him like a predator stalking prey.

But Thorne wasn't the same as before. His deepened understanding of spirituality gave him a clarity he had never experienced. He wasn't just reacting; he was anticipating.

The beast charged again, but this time Thorne didn't evade. He focused his strength. As the creature closed in, he swung his sword in a smooth arc, releasing enough force that struck the beast square in the chest. The impact sent the Night Stalker crashing to the ground with a yelp.

Panting, the creature struggled to its feet, but Thorne was already on the move. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, his blade flashing as he delivered a decisive strike to its neck.

The beast fell, the mist dissolving into its body from which it came.

Thorne stood still for a moment, catching his breath. His heart raced, but his mind was clear. The fight had been almost effortless, a stark contrast to the battle he had fought before.

He could feel the difference—the smoothness in his movements, the precision in his strikes, and the way he had been able to manipulate his spirituality to guide him.

The difference was clear, if before using his spirituality allowed him see events after it happened, now he could see those events but faster, basically his lag rate had reduced.

He smiled. This was the result of his growth, the fruit of his efforts—literally and figuratively.

Sheathing his sword, Thorne continued toward the second location, his steps lighter and more confident. If the first gift had done this for him, he could only imagine what awaited him next.
