THE MALEVOLENT CREATURE

Chapter 5: 5;BEGINNING OF THE END

The air reeked of rot and death as chaos consumed the event grounds. The mutated insects grew larger by the second, their bodies grotesquely expanding into unnatural proportions. Spiders the size of small cars scuttled across the area, their many eyes gleaming with a predatory hunger. Worms the width of tree trunks slithered over trampled bodies, their segmented forms pulsating with each movement.

Leo and Kai stood frozen, unable to process the horror unfolding before them. Screams of terror filled the air as people scattered in every direction, their paths blocked by the monstrous creatures. The soldiers continued to fire, but their bullets had little effect against the insects' thick exoskeletons.

"Fall back!" one of the commanding officers shouted, his voice barely audible over the cacophony of gunfire and human screams.

The spiders were the first to attack. With terrifying speed, they leaped into the crowd, their mandibles snapping. A man screamed as one pinned him down, its legs easily breaking his bones as it began to feed. The cockroaches came next, their grotesque forms clambering over everything in sight. Some of them dragged screaming victims away, their antennae twitching as they searched for more prey.

Leo grabbed Kai's arm. "We need to move!"

Kai didn't respond. He was too busy staring at the horrifying scene unfolding in front of him. A woman fell to the ground, clutching her chest as her body convulsed violently. In seconds, her form twisted and elongated, her arms sprouting grotesque appendages while her skin took on a sickly green hue. Her mouth opened in a soundless scream as she lunged at the nearest person, tearing into them with inhuman strength.

"She's… mutating," Kai whispered, his voice trembling.

Leo pulled him hard. "Come on!"

The mutation was spreading faster than anyone could have anticipated. Those bitten or attacked by the insects began to change almost instantly, their screams of pain quickly turning into guttural roars. Their bodies twisted into monstrous hybrids—part human, part insect—and their humanity disappeared as they joined the frenzy, hunting down any survivors.

To make matters worse, the transformed humans didn't last long. Within minutes, their grotesque bodies began to swell and rupture, exploding into showers of green goo. The goo itself was corrosive, melting anything it touched and releasing a noxious gas that only fueled the growing chaos. Entire sections of the city were covered in the acidic substance, the explosions leveling buildings and leaving behind smoldering craters.

The scene was broadcast live to the world, the cameras still rolling despite the carnage. People watching from their homes were horrified, children crying as their parents tried to shield them from the images on the screen. But it was impossible to look away.

The insects weren't just confined to the ceremony grounds anymore. Swarms of overgrown bees and flies buzzed through the streets, attacking anyone they found. Screams echoed through the city as the insects decapitated their victims, their mutilated bodies left as grim warnings. But even in death, the nightmare continued—every severed body began to mutate, rising again as part of the swarm.

Back at the ceremony, Leo and Kai ran as fast as their legs could carry them, dodging the chaos.

"What are we gonna do?" Kai gasped, his face pale and his voice trembling with barely suppressed terror.

"The only thing we can do," Leo replied, his voice steady despite the panic in his chest. "Escape."

They sprinted toward the NASA facility, retracing their steps from earlier in the day. The air around them was thick with the sound of buzzing wings and the screams of the dying. Bodies littered the ground, some still twitching as they began to mutate.

Kai gagged as they ran past the mutilated remains of a man, his stomach contents spilling out onto the ground. "I think I'm gonna be sick," he muttered, trying to hold back the bile rising in his throat.

"Not now!" Leo snapped. "We have to keep moving!"

The facility was in sight when the ground beneath them suddenly buckled. The concrete cracked and split apart as a massive figure burst through, sending debris flying in all directions.

Standing before them was a worm-like creature, easily three times their height. Its segmented body glistened with a sickly sheen, and its face—a grotesque amalgamation of human and insect features—twisted into a snarl.

Kai screamed. "What the hell is that?!"

Leo grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "Run!"

The worm woman let out a bone-chilling screech, her elongated body lunging toward them with terrifying speed. Leo and Kai sprinted down the nearest alley, their feet pounding against the pavement as they desperately tried to escape. The creature gave chase, her massive form smashing through walls and debris as if they were nothing.

"There's the gate!" Leo shouted, spotting the facility's exit up ahead.

They pushed themselves harder, their lungs burning as they neared the exit. The worm woman was close behind, her screeches growing louder with every second.

As they burst through the gate, a group of SWAT soldiers descended from helicopters above.

"Open fire!" one of the soldiers shouted, and a hail of bullets rained down on the creature.

The worm woman roared in pain, her attention shifting to the soldiers. Leo and Kai stumbled to a stop, watching in shock as the SWAT team unloaded everything they had.

One of the soldiers fired an electric taser, the prongs embedding themselves into the worm's slimy flesh. The creature let out an ear-piercing shriek as electricity coursed through its body, its massive form convulsing before collapsing to the ground.

The SWAT team approached cautiously, their weapons trained on the still-twitching creature.

"What the hell is this?" one of them muttered, his voice filled with equal parts fear and disgust.

Meanwhile, another soldier noticed Leo and Kai standing nearby, their faces pale and their bodies trembling.

He approached them cautiously, placing a hand on Leo's shoulder. "Are you okay, buddy?"

Leo shook his head, his voice barely above a whisper. "What the hell is happening?"

The soldier sighed, looking back at the carnage. "Wish I knew," he muttered, before speaking into his radio.

A massive helicopter landed nearby, its blades kicking up a cloud of dust and debris. The soldier grabbed Leo and Kai by the arms, pulling them toward the waiting aircraft.

"Hey!" Kai protested, but the soldier didn't listen.

"Get them out of here!" he shouted to the pilot.

Leo resisted, pulling back as the soldier tried to push him inside. "Wait! My father—Dr. Halsey! He's still out there!"

The soldier hesitated, his expression grim. "I'm sure he's okay," he said, shoving Leo into the helicopter before slamming the door shut.

The aircraft began to lift off, and Leo pressed his hands against the window, staring down at the burning city below.

Kai slumped into his seat, his face pale. "What are we going to do now?"

Leo didn't answer. His mind was racing, the horrifying images of the ceremony replaying in his head.

As the helicopter soared into the night, the full scope of the invasion came into view. The city was overrun, swarms of insects flooding the streets as buildings crumbled under the weight of the destruction.

And somewhere in the chaos, Dr. Halsey was still out there.
