Chapter 50
“Who would do something like this…”
Sellonia looked at the piles of jewels before her eyes and made a dumbfounded expression.
There was a reason why the servants sneaked into the room while Tan and she were in the bathroom.
They had secretly put the jewels they had stolen into Tan’s bedroom drawer.
In fact, most of the valuables they had stolen and brought back were her own.
This was a situation where anyone could tell that they were trying to frame Tan as a thief.
“It’s obvious.”
Tan, who had changed his clothes, crossed his arms and replied as if it was nothing.
It was obvious who the culprit was.
“Ah…”
Sellonia was about to ask Tan but found the answer herself.
Although she wasn’t 100% certain, there was only one person who would do something like this at the moment.
It was a mean, even low-class method. To try to do something like this in the duke’s residence.
“I have a plan.”
Tan stared at her silently before opening his mouth.
“Why.”
“Yes?”
“Why are you trying to help me?”
“What kind of nonsense is that? Then shall I just watch you get falsely accused?”
“Then I’ll be kicked out of this mansion like you want, though?”
“That’s…”
Sellonia’s words trailed off for a moment at the right answer.
Tan thought, without taking his eyes off Sellonia.
She really is a strange woman. No, she’s a special woman.
Why does she want me to leave this mansion, but try to help me without hesitation?
It was the same in the bathroom that day.
She could have just ignored him bleeding, if she had, then she wouldn’t have held his hand, and he wouldn’t have known that she was healing his pain.
Yet she didn’t pass me by. It was the same today.
Of course, Tan had no intention of taking it lightly.
It would have been easy to just brush off such a trivial matter.
“I just don’t like it if you leave like that.”
Sellonia chose her words on the tip of her tongue and blurted out her answer.
As he said, she wouldn’t step forward and help him.
But maybe it was because she had received so much help from him? Now that she knew the truth, she couldn’t pretend not to know.
Furthermore, she knew that even if he was falsely accused, he wouldn’t just leave.
That’s why she was just helping him. Perhaps.
“Is that all?”
“Then what else could there be?”
“That’s too bad.”
Tan snickered self-deprecatingly.
After speaking, it became clear. Her answer was so regrettable.
He had an answer he definitely wanted to hear.
***
That evening.
As Sellonia and Tan were leaving the dining room after dinner, they heard a conversation.
“Is it really gone? We have to make sure. We made a fuss over something like this, but if it’s not the case, then there’s no turning back.”
“R-Really… It’s a precious treasure that my father left me…”
“Is there really a THI! EF! in this MANSION?”
She couldn’t help but listen. The servants’ voices were so loud that they could be heard clearly even though they were quite far away.
Sellonia didn’t just pass by and approached the servants.
“What’s going on?”
“M-Miss…”
The servants were startled by her appearance with exaggerated gestures.
“T-That…”
“This child’s most treasured possession has disappeared.”
As the maid hesitated, as if she was scared, another maid beside her answered instead.
At that moment, Sellonia’s eyes sharpened.
The two voices she had heard from the other side of the door were probably these two.
“Really? What are your names?”
“I’m Jane, and this child is Laura.”
The maid who lost the possession was Laura, and the child who was catching the wind next to her was Jane.
“Goodness. Treasured possessions, so you must be upset.”
Sellonia pretended to sympathize and comforted Laura, then called a maid who was passing by.
“Maid.”
“Yes, Miss.”
The maid came running in as soon as she was called.
“They say this child’s treasured possessions have disappeared. We need to search the mansion thoroughly. I need to call everyone in the mansion.”
“Pardon?”
Laura, surprised by Sellonia’s words, raised her voice sharply. It seemed as if she had never expected her to go that far.
“M-Miss, it’s because of me that you…”
“Laura, you said it was something your father left you? It must be a precious thing, so I really want to find it for you.”
“B-But…”
“Maid, what are you doing! I told you to hurry and gather them!”
The maid quickly called the servants together in a stern voice that shook the mansion. The complexions of Laura and Jane, who were standing in front of Sellonia, gradually turned ashen.
“Princess.”
It was then.
Rubeus, who would never come to the mansion unless called by her father, appeared.
“What’s going on?”
“This child’s valuables have gone missing.”
“Goodness. So that’s what happened. It seems there’s a thief.”
Rubeus’s gaze turned to Tan at Sellonia’s words.
The corners of his lips rose sharply and then closed.
“Princess, just in case, how about checking to see if your valuables have gone missing?”
“I guess so. Ella, go and check.”
Sellonia nodded at Rubeus’ suggestion.
“Yes? Yes, yes!”
Ella, who was with him, quickly climbed the stairs to the second floor and headed to her room. The servants who were summoned by the quick actions of the maid gathered in groups of three or five.
And in a few minutes, all the servants of the mansion were present, filling the central hall.
Yet not a single one was in sight.
It was as expected.
“Maid, call Raymond too.”
“Yes? But Sir Raymond…”
“I said, everyone in this house.”
“I-I understand…”
The maid hurriedly headed to Duke Basin’s office with a pale face.
Raymond was the Duke’s aide.
Since the maid had gone to call Raymond, the Duke would surely hear about this situation and take action.
Sellonia planned to use her position as the princess to make a big deal out of it.
So she was determined to prevent the culprit from setting foot in the duke’s residence again.
“W-What should we do…”
“Shh.”
As Laura muttered, shaking her shoulders, at the unmanageable situation, Jane noticed.
Rubeus, who had been watching the whole situation with satisfaction, gave Jane and Laura a fierce look.
“Sellonia, what is this fuss?”
Eventually, Duke Basin also came to the central hall.
Duke Basin approached Sellonia with a disgruntled expression, accompanied by Raymond, who had been summoned.
“M-Miss!”
At that moment, Ella, who had just gone up to the second floor, came down the stairs in shock.
Ella hurried down the stairs, bowed to Duke Basin, and opened her mouth.
“I can’t see any of your valuables either!”
“What?”
Galloway’s expression turned grim.
For what Ella said meant that someone had dared to steal the Princess’ belongings.
A commotion broke out among the servants who filled the central hall. Everyone was suspicious of each other, wondering who dared touch the Miss’ belongings.
“Search the servants’ rooms thoroughly!”
“Your Grace, Princess. I heard a strange story.”
When Galloway gave the order, Rubeus thought it was the right time to speak.
Sellonia gave Rubeus the stage to speak, leaving her displeased father behind.
“Speak.”
“I heard someone recently asked the maids for money. He seems to be short on money, so I wonder if it’s his doing.”
“Who is that?”
Rubeus raised the corners of his lips in a wicked way at Sellonia’s question and pointed his finger at Tan, who was standing next to her.
“It’s the Sir who is staying here.”
The surroundings became quiet as if cold water was poured on Rubeus’ words.
