Chapter 26: Reversal
Zhou Dong stood in the hotel room, taking a long moment to react.
After picking up the phone and realizing the call had ended, he could pretty much guess what Shen Tianze would have said next.
It was nothing but letting him take all the blame alone, then promising an empty check, saying he'd find a way to help, and how many benefits he'd give him, and so on.
Zhou Dong didn't care about these things. The only thing he regretted now was not choosing to run away immediately when he received the call from Miao Youmin.
However, it's too late to say anything now. Even if he wanted to run, he probably couldn't because he had already missed the best opportunity.
At this moment, the door to the room was violently knocked open.
Zhou Dong instinctively wanted to make a final struggle, quickly running toward the window where the rope made from bedsheets by Zhang Wan was still hanging.
But he had only taken two steps when a large hand landed on his shoulder, pressing him to the ground without any room for argument...
After being taken to the police station, Song Keren arranged for him to meet Zhang Wan and Zhou Jiwen.
This was a request from Zhou Jiwen, and considering the fact that if Zhou Jiwen hadn't come forward, there would have been another miscarriage of justice right under her nose, Song Keren turned a blind eye.
"Dad, how could it be you?!"
Handcuffed Zhou Dong shouted excitedly: "Please save me, Zhang Wan and Xiao Feng, those two bastards want to seize our family's property, so they set me up. You mustn't fall for their tricks!"
"Shut up!" Zhou Jiwen angrily interrupted Zhou Dong's nonsense: "Xiao Wan has already told me everything. Would you dare to say that the female college student wasn't arranged by you?!"
"Zhou Dong, Zhou Dong, I've told you before that once you harbor malicious intentions, it harms both others and yourself. But you still didn't listen to your father's words and went astray."
Zhou Dong suddenly became frantic: "I'm clearly your son, so why do you choose to believe Xiao Feng and that bitch Zhang Wan instead of your son?!"
"Because you haven't given me any reason to believe you," Zhou Jiwen said. "If you're truly innocent, then present strong evidence to prove your innocence."
"Zhang Wan, you shameless bitch, you're the one who charmed my dad. One day, you'll know the cost of betraying me." Zhou Dong cursed, his eyes red with anger.
And Zhang Wan remained very calm, looking at the Zhou Dong across from her who was cursing like a madman.
She felt as if the Zhou Dong from college days was a completely different person from the one in front of her, unable even to muster the emotion of anger.
The saying goes that the greatest sorrow is when the heart dies, and that was probably what Zhang Wan felt at this moment.
Zhou Jiwen sighed and turned his gaze to Song Keren: "Director Song, take him away."
Song Keren nodded, signaling to an officer to take Zhou Dong to the interrogation room for statements, while Zhou Jiwen continuously sighed and shook his head: "You reap what you sow, this truly is self-inflicted."
...
With Zhou Dong's arrest, Xiao Feng's innocence was also proven, and he was quickly notified he could leave.
Xiao Feng didn't care much; he hadn't brought anything with him when he came in, so leaving wouldn't be a hassle.
But when he called out to Lone Wolf to leave with him, Lone Wolf refused: "Brother, you go ahead. I haven't sorted out my identity issues yet, going out would only cause you trouble."
Xiao Feng thought it over and found it to be true. In the current social environment, being without an identity card meant it was almost impossible to get by.
After all, the domestic situation wasn't like the chaotic Middle East battlefield, where lack of order and restraint meant anything could be done with money and power.
"Alright then." Xiao Feng patted Lone Wolf's shoulder, jotting down his phone number on a piece of paper: "Call me after you get out, and I'll treat you to a welcome meal."
The Prison Warden personally escorted Xiao Feng to the prison gates, unable to shake a sense of surrealism at the experience.
This young man entered with head held high, and when leaving, he had to be seen out as if he were some sort of lord.
What the heck was this? Was he here to serve time or to experience life?
But these thoughts were fleeting because, to the prisoners and the Prison Warden, Xiao Feng's arrival and departure were of little consequence.
Xiao Feng stood outside the prison gates, breathing in the fresh air, feeling the difference between inside and out.
In a way, prison is a sort of semi-detached existence from society, two distinctly different worlds, which also explains why it's hard for many released inmates to reintegrate.
The times move too quickly, and those who can't keep pace are easily left behind.
At that moment, a rugged off-road vehicle pulled up in front of him, the driver's door opening to reveal a stunning woman getting out, her eyes scanning Xiao Feng: "You're Xiao Feng? You look quite handsome."
Xiao Feng was momentarily stunned and didn't say anything before the rear window slowly rolled down, and seeing the person in the back seat, Xiao Feng was genuinely dumbfounded…
The woman in the rear seat was equally as captivating as the one who got out of the car, and merely by her looks, the word 'stunning' certainly wasn't an exaggeration!
This woman, whom Xiao Feng remembered vividly, was the Lanyue Group's president, Du Qingyue, who had given him a million-dollar cheque at the hotel that night.
"Get in the car," Du Qingyue said coldly.
Xiao Feng wasn't pleased: "You tell me to get in, and I just get in?"
Du Qingyue looked at Xiao Feng expressionlessly and coldly said, "I keep my word; three days ago I said if you survived three days, I'd come for you. Now three days have passed, you're still alive, so I'm honoring my promise, get in the car."
Xiao Feng shrugged, returning her a nonchalant smile, opened the car door, and took a seat in the back.
The vehicle started, and Xiao Feng went straight to the point: "So, what do you want with me?"
"You're already at odds with the Shen Family, and Shen Tianze holds a grudge against me, we have a common enemy."
Du Qingyue's tone remained icy: "And aren't you tired of Shen Tianze's repeated sabotage? Tomorrow, at the civil affairs bureau, we register for marriage!"
After hearing her words, Xiao Feng couldn't help but chuckle: "Did I ever say I wanted to marry you?"
Du Qingyue's brow furrowed slightly: "Are you afraid?"
As soon as these words were said, Jiang Yixin, who was driving, distinctly sensed a tension begin to fill the car.
A moment later, looking at Du Qingyue's cold and headstrong demeanor in the rearview mirror, Xiao Feng shook his head and suddenly laughed, saying, "I'm starting to feel a bit fond of you."
