Chapter 8: Intervention in the Alley & Meeting Old Friend
Micah leaned against the corner of a building, watching the scene unfold. His red eyes narrowed slightly as he decided to observe for a moment longer to see how the situation developed.
The catkin woman yelled, "Leave me alone, scumbags!"
The two guys laughed, exchanging crude remarks as they grabbed her arm. The catkin woman snarled, "Let me go, asshole!" She swung a punch at one of them but missed, which only made the men laugh louder.
Micah, still in thought, observed the scene with a growing sense of irritation. The men continued their mocking, making comments about her beauty and body with wide, lecherous smiles.
The catkin woman, however, wasn't going down without a fight. She raised her knee and delivered a sharp kick to one of the men's groins. He collapsed to the ground with a groan, but his partner retaliated by slapping her across the face. She stumbled, her face red with both anger and tears welling up in her eyes.
The fallen man cursed as he staggered back up. "You'll pay for that," he snarled, then muttered something about selling her off. He grabbed her hair, yanking it cruelly, and laughed as she struggled against his grip.
The catkin woman screamed, "Leave me alone, creeps!"
The other man sneered, "You know what? Let me have a taste of you," as he leaned closer. She fought desperately, kicking and twisting, but they only laughed louder.
In her mind, she screamed, Someone, please save me!
Suddenly, a calm voice rang out. "Hey, guys," it said. "Stop. What are you going to do to her?"
The men froze and looked up to see a figure walking toward them. The catkin woman's teary eyes focused on the newcomer. Who is he? she thought.
The two men snickered as they looked Micah up and down. "And who are you supposed to be, kid?" one of them sneered.
Micah smiled, his demeanor calm. "I'm a new adventurer. Nice to meet you," he said lightly. "But back to what I was saying—let her go."
The second man laughed. "And what if we don't, rookie? What are you gonna do about it, little boy?"
Micah's red eyes glowed faintly. "I'll hurt you. Bad."
The man laughed harder. "I'd like to see you—"
Before he could finish, a deafening BANG echoed through the alley. The man flew backward, slamming into the wall with a sickening thud before crumpling to the ground, unconscious.
His partner's eyes widened in shock. "What the hell?!" he yelled, rushing to his friend's side. "Hey! Are you okay?!" He shook him but got no response. Turning back to Micah, he screamed, "What did you do to him?!"
Micah stood calmly, his magic gun in hand. He smiled. "Magic Bullet. Don't worry, he'll be out for a while."
The catkin woman stared in surprise, watching the scene unfold. Micah turned his attention back to the remaining thug. "Now," he said coldly, "leave, or you'll end up like him."
The man didn't need to be told twice. Grabbing his unconscious friend, he bolted, leaving a trail of dust as he shouted, "You'll regret this!" fading into the distance.
Micah chuckled as he watched them retreat. He turned toward the catkin woman, who was still staring at him. "Are you okay, miss?" he asked, his tone softening.
She looked at him, her eyes gleaming with a hint of a yandere-like intensity. "Yeah, whatever," she muttered, brushing herself off.
Micah shrugged. "Cool. I'm Micah," he said with a small smile.
"Whatever," she replied. "My name's Lira," she added reluctantly.
Micah gave her a nod. "Alright then. See you around, Lira." He turned and began walking out of the alley.
Lira watched him leave, her expression softening as a small smile tugged at her lips. Who is this guy? she thought, her heart fluttering slightly. "Yeah, whatever," she muttered to herself before turning and heading in the opposite direction.
Micah decided to take Mission 1: Gather Healing Herbs and Mission 3: Clear Out Rats from the E-rank board. He pulled the two mission slips from the board and walked over to the receptionist desk where Kaida was seated. She noticed him approaching and smirked.
"What did you get this time, newbie?" Kaida asked, her golden eyes glinting with curiosity.
Micah laughed. "I got two E-rank missions this time!"
Kaida raised an eyebrow, a little surprised. "Two, huh? Ambitious for a newbie. But sure, we can do that."
Micah grinned. "Cool, awesome."
Kaida took the mission slips from him and reviewed them. Then, she began explaining the details of each mission. "For the first mission, you'll need to gather 10 bundles of Healing Herbs from Whispering Grove. Be cautious of the low-level monsters that like to roam there. They're not too dangerous, but don't underestimate them."
She paused and tapped the second mission slip. "For the second one, you'll be clearing out a storehouse infested with large rats. It's here in the city, so you can tackle it whenever you're ready. Just be prepared—these rats are bigger than your average rodent and can be feisty."
Micah nodded, listening intently to every word she said. When Kaida finished, she handed the mission slips back to him. "Good luck, newbie. And be careful out there."
Micah flashed her a confident smile. "Yeah, see you later, tiger girl."
Kaida laughed lightly as he walked away. "That kid…" she murmured to herself, smiling. She shook her head and returned to her work, still amused by his energy and determination.
Micah left the guild, his mind preoccupied with deciding which mission to tackle first. As he walked through the bustling streets, he suddenly heard a familiar voice call out behind him.
"Hey, idiot Micah!"
Without even turning around, Micah chuckled and said, "Hey, monster. What are you doing here?" Turning around, he saw his best friend Scarlett standing there with her party members, including the ever-popular Chase.
Scarlett crossed her arms and smirked. "So, idiot Micah, what are you doing coming out of the guild?"
Micah sighed dramatically. "I'm going to do two missions at the same time for the guild. And you guys?"
Scarlett and her party exchanged glances before Scarlett replied, "We're joining the guild as well. Time to level up and get serious."
Micah smiled genuinely. "Well, good luck, guys. I'm rooting for you. See ya around."
Scarlett waved him off, her tone teasing. "Yeah, whatever. See ya."
As Micah walked away, he turned back briefly, meeting Scarlett's gaze. They both exchanged a small smile.
"Idiot," she said under her breath.
"Monster," he muttered, grinning.
Chase stepped forward, glancing at Scarlett. "Scarlett, are you ready?"
Scarlett nodded, tearing her eyes away from Micah. "Let's go."
Meanwhile, Micah continued walking through the streets, his thoughts returning to his missions. "Let's do Mission 1 first," he decided with a chuckle. Laughing to himself, he adjusted the strap on his gear and headed toward the city exit, ready to find and collect the healing herbs from Whispering Grove.
