Chapter 27: No idea
Ophelia couldn't believe Nikolai. Rhaziel had already been dispatched by him to track down the culprits. He wasn't running away from his responsibilities. She was relieved, but a part of her felt bad for insulting him. She wasn't going to take them back though, he deceived her.
She, Nikolai, and Rhaziel were in the bedroom, but the men were standing by the door talking to each other as she sat on the bed, completely in disbelief.
"Magic?" Nikolai asked dully.
"Hmm." Rhaziel nodded. "Dark magic."
"Dark fairies." Nikolai smirked, crossing his arms on his chest and turning his gaze to Ophelia who widened her eyes with interest.
"Particularly, princess Esmeralda." Rhaziel informed.
"You caught her." While gazing at the dragoness seated at the foot of his king-sized bed, Nikolai muttered. She was incredibly gorgeous. She watched their discourse with interest, her golden eyes glistening. Her dark, ruffled hair fell asleep onto her shoulders, its strands unwinding on her forehead and cheeks. He watched those enticing lips part.
Damnation!
He desperately wanted to pin her to the bed. They could both fit inside, for sure. No matter how many positions he gave her, there was no question that it couldn't hold them.
"...Tied up." Rhaziel's voice came in as a fading whisper.
"And Danil?" Nikolai questioned, not taking his gaze away from Ophelia, who had now stood up from her bed and proceeded towards him.
"I caught her there before they arrived there." Nikolai wasn't entirely listening to Rhaziel's response, which caused him to scowl a little.
At last, Nikolai turned to face the demon and gave him a shoulder tap. "What an excellent butler."
Rhaziel's scowl widened. The deranged lycan was kidding with him. "They will be aware that dark fairies are responsible for the attack."
"Why did she attack?" Ophelia entered with curiosity. "What is in the southern region?"
"A storage tower." Nikolai responded, putting his hands in his pockets and returning his gaze to the intrigued dragoness. Why did she seem so interested in this topic? Did she know the princess?
Ophelia raised a brow. "Storage tower?"
"The tower has magical artifacts for safekeeping and is heavily guarded by warriors, but since the princess chose to attack this way, in broad daylight, it spills that a sacred artifact belonging to the dark fairies has been kept there and she wants it back." Nikolai explained.
Astonishment filled her expression. "I want to meet her."
"Do you think I will let you out of this castle?" Nikolai slowly asked.
"Do you think I will let you give me stockholm syndrome?" Ophelia deadpanned.
She moved closer to him, lifting her hand and prodding him on the brow. "There is no way I am going to stay locked up in this castle, Lai, Lai; I will go wherever I want, whenever I want."
His blood-red eyes blazed dangerously, and in an instant, he grabbed her wrist and narrowed his gaze at her. She appeared powerful and commanding, her aura exuding authority. Her wrist was so small, he could easily snap it right there.
"Interfering in my family's affairs won't help you," Nikolai huffed and let go of her hand.
"You are so dumb." Ophelia hissed, rubbing her wrist. He had a fiery touch.
"Aside from the hellbent connection.."
Nikolai interrupted her speech with a scoff of complete incredulity. "Hellbent?"
Ophelia sent him a sharp glare. "Don't interrupt me, hellhound,"
Nikolai smirked, straining his jaw. Her words were cutting deep. If she had been someone else, he would have pulled out their hearts and waited for it to beat before staring at it. However, she wasn't someone else, she was his mate. His mate, whom he had to trap.
"You're not here to discover the depth of our bond, are you?"
Ophelia smiled, her eyes shifted back to their dark form. "I am, but I am also here to put a stop a war."
Nikolai nodded and glanced at Rhaziel who remained with a blank expression. It was like they were having a wordless conversation.
"How did Rodion and Esteban find out you were leaving Nexus when no one but your family knows?" Ophelia asked, and her question sent Nikolai to return his gaze to her, twisting with amusement.
"Of course there's a mole." He tsked.
Ophelia's eyes flashed. "And you've never thought of it?"
Nikolai chuckled, leaning his face close to hers. "I am always one step ahead of you."
"I am awfully glad that you lower your guard around me."
"Trust me Fire Storm, I don't."
"Then help me stop the war!"
Nikolai leaned away, his smile vanished, expression emotionless. "The war is inevitable."
Ophelia clenched her fists. "I am not going to stand and watch an unreasonable war break out all because of power hungry souls."
"Power hungry souls are everywhere." Nikolai roared and grabbed her shoulders, but this just caused her eyes to revert to their golden reptilian shape.
"You cannot put a stop to the war." Nikolai seethed. "It began long before we were born."
"You speak as if you started the war... as if you will start the war." Ophelia said, her gaze hard as stone.
"You have absolutely no idea." Nikolai hissed as she lifted her chin, but she slapped his hand away and pushed him away.
"Isn't the person who created Dimorie the mole?"
"Wrong."
"Tell me."
"And if I do, what are you going to do?" Nikolai asked. "Kill them? Think deep Storm, doing that will only aggravate the situation."
"You know who the mole is?"
"At times, you have to act on your emotions."
Ophelia laughed. How Ironic.
"Tell me." She seethed.
"I'm not sure who the mole is, but you're right, it's a member of my family, but I'm not going to help you stop a war that can't be stopped."
"Then screw yourself, because whether you like it or not, I'm going to end this war." Her words were forceful, and her eyes glistened with purpose.
"Fuck!" Nikolai cursed her obstinacy. She had no idea what she was getting herself into. She had no idea that she had started the war by obeying her father. She had no idea she had begun the war by fully immersing herself in his twisted world. Because he would launch a war if anyone dared to take her away from him.
Damn the entire universe!
