The Lost Vanguard

Chapter 12: The Pack's Wrath

The howls grew louder, joined by the sound of claws scraping against wood. My blood ran cold as the first shadow appeared at one of the windows, a massive wolf, its eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen, its size dwarfing the beast that had attacked me before. Its fur shimmered faintly, as though reflecting an unseen light.

"They're here," Kaldar said grimly, drawing his sword. "Get ready."

The fire in my chest roared to life, its heat spreading through my veins as I stepped forward, my sword in hand. The flicker of fear that had lingered at the edges of my mind was gone now, replaced by something sharper, more focused.

The wolves wouldn't wait. And neither would I.

The first wolf lunged, shattering the window in a spray of splintered wood and glass. Its massive body hit the ground with a heavy thud, claws digging into the floor as it snarled, revealing fangs as long as my forearm. Kaldar met its charge without hesitation, his blade slicing through the air with brutal efficiency. The wolf yelped, staggering back, but another was already at the door, its bulk slamming against the barrier with enough force to rattle the entire building.

"Hold the line!" Kaldar barked, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Don't let them in!"

Elryan stood at the center of the room, his polished sword gleaming as he parried a strike from one of the wolves. Myrial moved behind him, her hands glowing with ethereal light as she cast a protective barrier over the room.

I found myself face-to-face with one of the beasts, its glowing eyes locking onto mine. The fire in my chest burned hotter, pushing me forward before I could think. My blade met the creature's charge, steel biting into fur and muscle as I swung with all my strength. The wolf snarled, twisting away, but I followed, each strike fueled by the strange energy coursing through me.

The clash of steel and fangs filled the room, each moment a blur of motion and sound. One of the hunters fell with a scream, his leg caught in the jaws of a wolf. Kaldar was there in an instant, driving his sword through the beast with a roar of effort. Blood splattered across the floor, the sharp, metallic scent mixing with the acrid smoke that still lingered in the air.

"Alaric, focus!" Kaldar's voice snapped me back to reality as another wolf lunged at me. I barely managed to dodge, its claws grazing my shoulder and tearing through the thick fur of my vest. The pain was sharp, but it only stoked the fire inside me.

I turned and swung my blade in a wide arc, catching the wolf across its flank. It howled in pain, staggering back, but I didn't stop. Each movement felt more natural, more instinctive, as though the sword were an extension of my arm. The fire guided me, driving me forward with an intensity I couldn't explain.

Myrial's voice cut through the chaos, chanting words in a language I didn't understand. A burst of light erupted from her hands, striking one of the wolves and sending it reeling. Elryan took advantage of the opening, his blade flashing as he delivered a precise strike to its throat.

"They're retreating!" one of the hunters called out, and for a moment, hope flickered in the room.

But then the howls outside grew louder, more urgent. The ground seemed to tremble beneath us as heavier footsteps approached, each one sending a chill down my spine. Kaldar cursed under his breath, stepping toward the shattered window to get a better look.

"It's not just wolves," he muttered, his grip tightening on his sword. "Something's driving them."

The door finally gave way with a deafening crack, and a massive wolf burst through, its glowing eyes blazing with unnatural fury. It was larger than the others, its fur dark as night and bristling with an eerie energy that seemed to distort the air around it. The hunters scrambled to regroup, their weapons raised, but the beast was faster.

It lunged at Kaldar, its massive jaws snapping shut inches from his face as he blocked it with his sword. The force of the impact drove him back, his boots skidding across the blood-slicked floor.

"Alaric, cover the others!" Kaldar shouted, his voice strained as he fought to hold the beast at bay.

I didn't hesitate, rushing to the aid of one of the fallen hunters. The man's leg was twisted at an unnatural angle, his face pale with pain. I stood over him, my sword raised, as two wolves closed in. Myrial's protective barrier flickered around us, but I knew it wouldn't hold for long.

"Stay behind me," I said, my voice steady despite the chaos around me.

The wolves lunged simultaneously, their movements eerily coordinated. I parried the first strike, my blade clashing against its claws, but the second wolf slipped past me, its jaws snapping at my side. Pain exploded through my ribs as its teeth found purchase, and I cried out, the fire inside me flaring in response.

With a surge of strength, I twisted free, driving my sword into the wolf's side. It yelped, collapsing to the ground, but the other was already on me. I braced myself, swinging my blade in a desperate arc. The strike connected, sending the wolf reeling, but my balance faltered, and I fell to one knee.

"Enough!" Myrial's voice rang out, her hands raised high as a brilliant wave of energy erupted from her. The light swept through the room, driving the wolves back with a deafening roar. The surviving beasts hesitated, their glowing eyes flickering with uncertainty, before retreating into the shadows.

The silence that followed was deafening. I struggled to catch my breath, my sword trembling in my grip. The fire inside me still burned, but it was dimmer now, subdued by the exhaustion that weighed on my limbs.

Kaldar stepped forward, his sword still raised as he scanned the room. "Everyone alive?" he asked, his voice rough but steady.

A chorus of pained groans answered him, but no one else had fallen. Myrial lowered her hands, her shoulders sagging as the glow around her faded. Elryan sheathed his sword with a frustrated huff, his expression dark.

"This isn't over," Kaldar said grimly. "Something's controlling them. And we're going to find out what."

I looked at the shattered door, my mind racing. The wolves had been more than animals. Their movements, their coordination, it was too precise, too calculated. And the fire in my chest… it whispered of something darker, something that wouldn't let us rest until the truth was uncovered.
