Chapter 203: A Contest Without Suspense_3
Watching the still unopened gate, Theresa, who was riding on a horse, furrowed her brows slightly, revealing a hint of displeasure in her expression.
Just as she was about to lose her temper, the tightly closed gate finally began to open slowly, and the hoarse cries rushed out along with hurried footsteps from inside.
A woman, around thirty years old, emerged, wearing a long dress with lace-trimmed wide sleeves. Her chestnut curls were elegantly arranged in a bun atop her head, and her beautiful face was tear-streaked.
"Your Highness! My esteemed Princess! Please, you must advocate for us! My husband...for the Duchy..."
Seeing the Baroness rushing forward, Theresa quickly and firmly steadied her restless warhorse to prevent it from kicking her, and harshly commanded.
"Do not be disrespectful—"
"Theresa! Let her come over."
Erin jumped down from the carriage and quickly went to the lady kneeling in the snow, supporting her frail arms with her hands.
"I'm right here, don't be afraid! Calm down first and tell me clearly, what exactly happened? Was it something with your husband?"
Following behind Erin, Luo Yan gently waved his magic wand inside his sleeve, using Holy Light to ease the Baroness' agitated emotions, and simultaneously retrieved a blanket from the storage space to place over her shoulders.
"She's very emotionally unstable now, let's go inside and talk."
He had actually already guessed the crux of the matter.
"Thank you..."
Bathed in the warm glow, the lady choked out a gratitude, glancing at Luo Yan, who had covered her with the blanket, but quickly diverted her gaze.
Perhaps due to the Holy Light, a slight flush returned to her cheeks, and her turbulent emotions finally eased a bit.
Erin helped her stand up from the ground and then handed her over to Theresa, who dismounted, while instructing the personal guards to be on standby at the entrance of the estate.
The group passed through the estate's gate, entering the stone walls overgrown with withered vines, where the fountain's water trickled in the courtyard, akin to the tears of men and women within the manor.
The fifty breastplate-clad cavalrymen who went to war with the Baron were all house servants, and many of their families resided in the estate.
The living room of the manor's main building.
A maid with tear stains at the corners of her eyes poured tea for the group before hurriedly leaving with the tray.
Sitting beside the fireplace, the lady named Marina clutched the blanket on her shoulders tightly, sobbing as she spoke.
"My husband heard you were coming here and got worried about the situation in Silver Pine Forest being seen by you, so he insisted on leading others to quell the demons there. But...the demons were too cunning, relying solely on my husband's strength was not enough to handle them, and his villagers all abandoned him...I, I really don't know what to do, I'm only in my thirties...my intention is, this family cannot go on without a pillar..."
As she spoke, she cried even more sorrowfully, and the children beside her similarly had reddened eyes brimming with tears.
These children were quite young, the eldest not even ten, certainly not old enough to replace their father's position as the family's mainstay.
Though Theresa felt sympathetic, she still furrowed her brows slightly.
She hated this kind of shirking of responsibility, especially when she saw the Princess's face showing signs of remorse.
As for Luo Yan, he stood quietly in thought with an expressionless face.
It was a difficult situation.
He could indeed set people free.
But doing so outright would be too obvious.
As for killing them...
That would be even more troublesome.
At this point, he couldn't help cursing in his heart that guy from the banquet flaunting in white, hurting his eyes.
From top to bottom, Silver Pine Town was full of his people, no one expected this fool to act beyond his capacity and come A for them.
Erin Campbell felt heavy-hearted, clutching Marina's hand tightly, solemnly promising.
"I know about Baron Ges' situation, Campbell Duchy will not forsake its loyal subjects, I promise you, I will do my utmost to bring him back."
Even though she knew the hope for the Baron's survival was quite slim.
The demons in the maze and the humans on the surface were mortal enemies, especially after her father had just slain their most venerated Demon King.
The Baron might already be dead.
Luo Yan placed his hand on Erin's shoulder, gently patting her.
"Let the lady be alone for a while, I think comfort is not what she needs most now, but rest. As for the Baron's matter, leave it to us."
"Mr. Colin?" Erin looked at Luo Yan in surprise, blurting out, "This is a matter of our Campbell Duchy, I don't want you to get dragged into danger because of us..."
Luo Yan shook his head, interrupting her.
"Please don't say that, Princess, this has nothing to do with Campbell Duchy, I said I would stand by your side."
Erin's expression slightly moved, but a hint of struggle still flickered in her eyes.
"But if anything happens to you—"
"My father would be proud of me, dying in the battle against demons is the greatest honor for Imperial Nobles." Luo Yan nodded slightly, his face calm and sincere, "We will eventually die, but noble souls will enter heaven."
Erin stared at him dumbfoundedly, a touch of emotion flashing in her eyes.
"Alright...I agree with you, but you must stay close to me. This is the battlefield, it's not like racing those flying brooms from the Wizard Tower."
Luo Yan almost forgot about this matter, yet suddenly hearing this naïve girl bring it up again almost cracked a smile.
Nonetheless, he was professionally adept at maintaining facial expressions, not even High-level Enchanting Demons could make him show a flaw.
Slightly nodding, he solemnly spoke.
"I promise you."
Erin nodded, then looked at Theresa, seriously instructing.
"Notify the Personal Guard, prepare to depart! While it's still not too late."
Theresa returned with a Knightly salute, accepting the command.
"Yes, Your Highness."
