Chapter 196: The True "Philanthropist"_2
The neat cut surfaces were like the mirrors of a kaleidoscope, reflecting the myriad faces of his servants.
After pausing for a long time, Edward suddenly spoke.
"Speaking of which, my sister has been with you recently, hasn't she?"
Andes replied respectfully.
"Yes, Your Majesty, she is staying at the manor where we once had a pleasant conversation, along with her Personal Guard."
Edward continued.
"And? What is she doing there?"
Andes nodded and said.
"As you have seen, she is merely fulfilling her proclaimed duties, such as keeping an eye on the movements beneath Thunder County's Maze, practicing sword skills, and aiding the poor outside Thunder City."
Edward looked at Andes with a faint smile, hinting.
"Is tasting their food necessary to aid the poor?"
Andes froze for a moment.
"Your Majesty, I... am not sure what you are referring to."
He truly didn't know this time.
After all, early in the morning he had boarded a carriage with the Diamond heading to Campbell Castle, fearing that he might be intercepted on the road if he delayed.
"It's nothing."
Seeing that Andes genuinely did not know what was going on, Edward smiled lightly and brushed over the topic.
No matter whether he was pretending or not, this matter actually had nothing to do with the Andes Family, but was an internal affair of the Campbell family.
For a thousand years, the opinions of the common people on this land were unimportant, the only difference being whether to be a happy sheep or an angry sheep.
If she was trying to win people over, then she was still too naive. Many things could become her political capital, such as the noble from the far-off empire, or the Sword of Legitimacy in her hand... but the admiration of the masses could never be.
In fact, on the contrary, people's cheers might expose her ambition too early, thus putting her in a dangerous position pushed by those with ulterior motives.
Especially when people cheered for the glory of the Campbell family, yet forgot who the true master of the Duchy was.
"I appreciate your support for my sister, but you are someone who knows the limits, and should know where the boundary lies. Additionally, if you wish to do something for me, please share this virtue with Erin Campbell as well."
The lightly spoken words seemed as light as a feather, but in Andes' ears they landed like a thunderbolt, making him break out in sweat.
With his ability to read people, he could tell that there was a hint of menace in the remark, even if it was directed at his closest relative.
Swallowing hard, Andes respectfully said.
"I will deeply remember Your Majesty's teachings and will remind Her Highness the Princess to be more mindful of her words and actions."
Seeing Andes hardly daring to breathe, Edward nodded satisfactorily, gently putting down this respectful servant.
"Very good."
His admonishment of the Andes Family stopped there, as he still needed the financial support of the Andes Family for his ambitions, and to counterbalance his increasingly disobedient brother.
Switching to a relaxed tone, Edward smiled and continued speaking.
"By the way, what's the situation with Colin? I heard he's quite popular recently, even overshadowing you in Thunder City."
Andes replied respectfully.
"Mr. Colin's identity seems to be that of a noble from the Empire, according to various rumors, his father is a Prince of the New Continent."
A prince owning a continent likely wouldn't care about a duchy's title, could this guy really be, as the rumors say, merely interested in Erin Campbell's beauty?
Edward couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't so simple, tapping lightly on the armrest of the throne with his index finger, he mused to himself after a moment.
"When did the Empire's nobles start taking an interest in us.'
"Perhaps it's simply the interest of the Colin family or Mr. Colin himself?" Andes cautiously phrased, "At least for now, he hasn't shown more ambition... I think he wouldn't support Her Highness Erin in doing anything dangerous."
He didn't care how Erin acted; he merely worried that Edward's jealousy might extend to Mr. Colin, thus affecting the Andes Family's prosperity for the coming century.
But for now, it seemed not.
"Hmm." Edward responded ambiguously, his contemplative face concealing his inner thoughts.
Andes rarely found himself unable to read his thoughts.
After a while, the esteemed Duke finally spoke.
"Perhaps I should find some time to visit Thunder City and pay a call to this mysterious and noble Empire friend."
"That would naturally be best, Thunder City's citizens welcome your presence," Andes let out a breath, respectfully continued, "and I believe Mr. Colin and his family would also hope to befriend a distinguished and noble friend like you."
...
The Diamond Andes presented to the Campbell family became the most dazzling jewel on the Campbell Duchy's crown, and the story of this Diamond smoothly became the talk of Campbell Duchy's high society.
The lobby bar of the Embrace of Dawn Hotel.
Wearing a tailcoat, Andor stood like a rounded penguin, champagne in hand, beside the bar, boasting to his newly made friends.
"...that night, I was right at the auction, the Diamond was less than fifty meters away, maybe forty meters...but that's not the point, the point was that shining brilliance! I swear by Saint Xi, I've never seen a jewel more dazzling, and never will there be one to surpass it!"
