Chapter 179: Corruption Everywhere_2
"The honorable Lord Demon King said that as long as I pay taxes according to the rules and follow local laws, I can do any kind of business I want in Beifeng City without needing additional permission!"
"Unbelievable! I've been in business for so many years, and it's the first time I've encountered such a generous lord! A business license that doesn't cost a cent!"
"I plan to open a food processing factory there. The skeletons told me they have a way to keep freshly baked bread from spoiling for an entire year! If that's true, we could even sell bread made on the northeastern coast of the Vortex Sea to the shores of the North Sea!"
While Socduo was enthusiastically rambling on, the surrounding guards couldn't help but change their expressions, their eyes gradually shifting to fear as they looked at him.
"Wait... Demon King?" Stan's face shifted slightly as he stared at him, the second half of his words already lost on him. Swallowing hard, he quickly said, "That undead mage... is really the Demon King?"
"Yes! I personally saw him!"
Socduo nodded excitedly, looking at the astonished crowd and continuing.
"I know you might be surprised, maybe even think I've gone mad, but honestly, at first, I felt the same way as you... Until I actually met that lord! I immediately understood why the refugees from Twilight Province trusted and even venerated him so much!"
"But he's the Demon King..." Stan looked nervously at his boss, his voice trembling. "Do you know what you're saying?"
"Of course I know what I'm saying! Although he's undoubtedly the Demon King, he gave me a feeling that's no different from any human... In fact, he's more polite and articulate than most lords I've ever met!"
Socduo's eyes were filled with reverence, his tone verging on being completely carried away.
He even unconsciously forgot that he was standing on land ruled by the Holy Sis Church, and even unconsciously forgot his original faith.
Or rather, his faith wasn't that devout to begin with; he just had never realized it.
"...If that guy is the Demon King, being ruled by the Demon King isn't so bad. At least those people seem to be living quite well! Stop looking at me like that; I'm serious... Once you meet him, you'll understand why I say this!"
Stan could no longer bear listening to such blasphemous remarks.
Saint Sis above.
If not for their years-long relationship and the fact that he relied on this guy's salary to feed his family, he would already have tied him up and dragged him to the nearest church!
Wait—
Maybe doing that is the right thing to do!
Stan suddenly thought of a possibility: it seemed like his boss had only become like this after meeting the Demon King!
"Maybe it's a Charming Technique!" A tense guard glanced at him, swallowed hard, and whispered, "I remember seeing Little Demons there... They're best at Spirit Magic! Oh, right, since it's the Demon King's territory, there might even be Enchanting Demons..."
Enchanting Demons!
Upon hearing this word, everyone's expressions instantly changed, and the way they looked at their boss turned odd.
"Listen, calm down first," Stan gripped his boss's shoulder, speaking firmly as he watched him babbling on, "I know this may be hard for you to accept, but the way you are now... is very much like someone who has been hit by a Charming Technique."
Socduo froze for a moment, then his brows furrowed as he angrily replied.
"Charming?! Are you crazy?! You're practically insulting that lord! Why would he do such a thing?"
"Who knows... How could I possibly know what demons think? Maybe for money?" Stan averted his gaze, unable to come up with a logical reason.
"If it were for money! He could have just taken it by force! Against him, our manpower wouldn't even amount to crumbs for him!" Socduo's face turned red with anger as he shouted, "And I already said, he's human! He doesn't have horns on his head, plus he's male!"
"I heard that powerful demons can hide their horns and tails, and... I heard that not all Enchanting Demons are female; some are male too." Stan stammered a reply, then glanced at the other guards beside him and barked, "What are you waiting for? Go grab a rope!"
The crowd, who had been merely watching the commotion, suddenly snapped back to reality, scrambling toward the nearby caravan to retrieve a rope.
Seeing the group approaching him with the rope, Socduo immediately panicked, backing away while shouting loudly.
"What are you doing?! I'm your boss; are you trying to revolt?!"
"We mean no offense; we're just trying to help you. You'll thank us... Apologies in advance!"
Stan grabbed Socduo's arms, preventing him from escaping, and, with the help of his men, tied him up and tossed him into the caravan.
Watching the curtain being pulled closed on the caravan, the now-bound Socduo furiously screamed.
"Let me go! You traitors! Release me now, and I'll act like nothing happened! Otherwise, once we reach Thunder City, you'll all pay dearly!"
His roaring voice made everyone cringe instinctively, but no one dared approach to untie him.
Stan swung himself onto a horse, then issued orders to the camp's residents.
"Pack up and break camp; we need to head to the nearest town! There should be a priest there!"
