The Lord Demon King is Unfathomable!

Chapter 171: The Research Commission

In the depths of the fourth layer of the Maze, within the Mist Forest, a Dark Night Elf was leisurely dozing off while resting against a tree branch.

Her petite figure resembled a willow twig perched on the branch, her wheat-toned skin blending seamlessly with the color of the tree trunk; without a careful look, one would hardly notice a person hiding there.

Ever since the canopy of the fourth layer of the Maze regained its light, the once withered forest was rejuvenated, and the warm rays perpetually tempted one to succumb to drowsiness.

At first, Sherry had been diligently standing guard, but the surrounding quietness was so profound that after a while, she couldn't resist falling asleep.

After all, nothing serious had been happening in the Maze recently, and Adventurers rarely dared to stir up trouble in the fourth layer.

Though an annoying group of goblins had appeared, the tiny troublemakers didn't dare come near this area.

More importantly, "Little Grey" had awakened recently, and the entire forest had come back to life.

Every blade of grass and every twig here — not a single movement escaped Little Grey's watchful gaze. If anything were to happen, it would surely inform her.

As Sherry was enjoying her sweet slumber, a gentle breeze suddenly swept by, and a butterfly, seemingly coming out of nowhere, landed squarely on her nose.

Its wings shed pollen that tickled her nostrils, prompting her to sneeze uncontrollably. "Achoo!" She sneezed so loudly she fell off the tree.

"Ouch!"

Landing on her rear, she let out a brief yelp of misery. Fortunately, the pile of dried leaves on the ground was sufficiently thick to cushion her fall, leaving her unharmed.

As she rubbed her lower back, grumbling under her breath about her misfortune, she stood up and suddenly spotted a noble figure standing in the shadows of the nearby thicket.

Upon seeing that angular, authoritative face exuding natural majesty, Sherry's expression instantly lit up with delight, and she subconsciously exclaimed.

"Demon King?! What brings you here?!"

Previously, her father had tasked her and her sister with serving as the Demon King's guards. However, since the Demon King had recently been staying within his own domain without any travel needs, they were sent back home.

After all, the distance between here and the surface was not too far; in case of anything, they could be summoned and arrive quickly.

But truth be told, she much preferred being by the Demon King's side over standing guard near her home.

Not merely because of the Demon King's handsome and pleasing appearance, but also because the meals there were constantly varied and novel.

Unlike the vegetarian Elves, the fallen Dark Night Elves were not picky eaters. Just the thought of those roasted meats made her gulp involuntarily.

Although Mist Town offered grilled food as well, her father strictly forbade them from approaching the place without reason, sending specific individuals there only for essential supplies.

"I need to pay your father a visit..." Luo Yan glanced at Sherry, whose body was covered in fallen leaves, and asked with slight hesitation, "Are you alright?"

He had just seen, with his own eyes, this little one tumble down from over two meters high.

If she'd done that to welcome him, it was certainly unnecessary.

"No problem, no problem! Just a minor accident, hehe..."

Sherry chuckled shyly. Not daring to admit she had been asleep, she quickly brushed off the leaves clinging to her body.

Immediately after, she hopped to his side like a cheerful songbird, her voice ringing with clarity and sweetness.

"I'll guide you there. Please follow me!"

"Thank you for the trouble." Luo Yan nodded and casually flicked some dried leaves off her hair.

A faint blush surfaced on her sunny and cheerful face before she darted ahead like a gust of wind.

Watching the light-footed young girl, Luo Yan followed her slender figure through a lush and thriving forest, soon arriving at the edge of Gray Wind Tribe's camp.

Unlike how it looked when he'd first seen it, sturdy tree trunks now rose from the ground, weaving into formidable walls.

At the center of the walls was a narrow gap that could barely accommodate a single person, seemingly the entrance to this fortress.

Perhaps sensing their arrival, the thick tree trunks seemed almost alive, expanding the narrow gap into a wide entrance, nearly five meters across.

Luo Yan regarded this spectacle with astonishment.

Especially when his gaze fell upon the vibrant treehouses standing beyond the entrance, his expression grew more incredulous.

Since moonlight from the canopy bathed this forest, the transformation here could only be described as earth-shattering.

Noticing the expression on the Demon King's face, Sherry's lips curled into a smug smile. She unconsciously puffed out her chest and spoke in her crisp, melodious voice.

"...A long time ago, we lived in treehouses. But later, when the Maze's canopy extinguished its light and Little Grey grew weaker by the day, we had no choice but to move out of the treehouses and into tents made of animal hides. Now everything has returned — both the canopy's light and Little Grey. So, we moved back to our original homes..."

As she spoke, Sherry paused briefly, turning back to look at Luo Yan.

Her bright eyes seemed to speak, carrying a message of heartfelt gratitude and pure reverence that danced in the breeze tugging at the wisps of her hair.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome," Luo Yan smiled and nodded gently, his tone warm and sincere. "You are the citizens of the Great Graveyard. Protecting you is one of my duties as the Demon King."
