Chapter 157: The Chaotic Maze Finally Welcomes Calmness_2
After all, he had many requests to make of this fellow.
At the moment, the two were riding their hunting horses, followed by a group of guards, sauntering along the edge of Silver Pine Forest.
The previous earthquake had scared away their prey, so they began to talk about the Gate of Chaos in the maze.
By the way, perhaps because of that incident with the stockings, Baron Ges has been doing quite well lately, not even losing his temper over the lost game.
Furthermore, his whole demeanor appeared more vibrant, and he carried himself with an air of spirited confidence, often heard saying "As Earl Sir once mentioned," or "Duke His Highness remarked," hanging on his lips.
And this so-called theory about the Void, he had also heard from some bigwig.
Having patiently listened to Baron Ges's lengthy discourse, Sheriff Adela immediately spoke up.
"...Rest assured, honorable Baron, our patrol team has already expanded beyond Silver Pine Town into the forest. Should any creatures emerge from the maze, or any other incidents occur, I will inform you at the earliest opportunity."
After hearing Adela's words, Baron Ges let out a laugh before casually responding.
"Mr. Adela, I trust in your abilities, you have never let me down, right? However, I must say that the maze itself is of no concern; even if we ignore it, those demons will just end up killing each other endlessly, posing no real threat."
"Oh?" Adela raised an eyebrow, curiously asking, "Then what do you believe the real threat to be?"
"Of course, it's those who live above ground. Creatures from the depths won't usurp our living space, but they will, and they are unpredictable..."
Baron Ges slightly narrowed his eyes, gazing towards the northeast side of the forest.
North beyond Shattered Rock Peak lies the southern part of Twilight Forest—the Twilight Province of Ryan Kingdom.
And further east past the Twilight Province is Brass Pass, the divider between the flourishing world and barren lands.
While it's not likely that the Chaos armies could breach that pass, the confusion it's caused has already begun to spread into the heartland of Ryan Kingdom.
Baron Ges did not believe that those barbarians could reach the northeastern shores of Vortex Sea, but he had to guard against refugees from Twilight Province raiding his domain.
Turning his gaze back from afar, Baron Ges looked at his loyal sheriff, a smile curling on his mustache.
"Speaking of refugees, there's something I need your help with."
"At your service," replied Adela smoothly.
Baron Ges paused before continuing.
"Princess of the Campbell family will soon arrive in Thunder County, and I would like there to be not even a single refugee in my territory, not even one," he said, repeating the last part word by word, emphasizing its importance.
Adela expressed his surprise, asking puzzledly.
"The Duke's daughter? What is she doing here?"
Baron Ges stroked his mustache, smiling as he replied.
"She has her plans. However, what I've heard is that it's related to the Gate of Chaos."
Adela nodded his head, seemingly understanding, and then got back to the point.
"I'll keep an eye out for the refugee issue, although not having a single one is a bit unrealistic unless you close down the adventurer guild."
Baron Ges gestured dismissively.
"Adventurers are a different matter; you needn't concern yourself with them. I hear the Princess is quite interested in adventurers."
Hearing this unreasonable request, the corner of Adela's mouth twitched, and he could not help but speak out.
"But how do you tell apart refugees from adventurers? They don't write who they are on their faces."
Baron Ges, however, did not pick up on his discomfort and instead laughed heartily before speaking.
"That's where you come in, my friend. You deal with those clods often; you can certainly tell apart the good from the bad."
Adela's mouth twitched again, but he still gave a face-saving response.
"I will do my best."
Riding side by side, Baron Ges continued to instruct cheerfully.
"Don't be so tense; even if you make a mistake, it's no big deal. If there's someone to blame, it's their fault for wandering around."
After a pause, he went on.
"Silver Pine Forest is vast, you may proceed as you see fit. Oh, and I heard there's a haunted mine to the north. Although it's a property of the Andes Family, those rich folks have long since given up on it. If it really comes to it, you could send them there—it's a place with a roof to shelter from the wind, isn't it? Hahaha."
As he spoke, Baron Ges laughed at his own brilliant idea, proud of his ingenuity.
A place to shelter from the wind indeed.
Adela grimaced, deeply shocked by this man's disregard for human life.
Driving refugees into a place haunted by demons, was this man truly a follower of Saint Sis?
But it seemed he had no position to criticize him.
After all, his soul had already been sold to the demons.
"I understand your intentions, and I will follow through," said Adela.
Baron Ges smiled approvingly and nodded his head.
"You are a smart man; I appreciate you."
Adela bowed his head slightly.
"It is my honor."
...
For the residents of Thunder County, the sudden earthquake was merely a brief incident. Since the epicenter was deep within Silver Pine Forest, except for the alarmed residents of Silver Pine Town, the citizens living in the cities hardly took notice.
