Chapter 31: Chapter 28: plan A, B, C,...
They are four, lost in this swamp.
His fingers push the frame of his glasses against his nose , from the corner of his eye he watches the two women and the man who accompanies him.
Maybe he has bet on the wrong horse. with them he is isolated.
Of the four, he is the one with the fewest ties to the rest of the group.
There's this man who spends most of his time flirting with the leading woman. And this girl who follows the leader like a shadow.
In short, he is the weak link.
1 head is the passage ticket for 2 individuals.
It would be easy for them to attack him when they are 3 against one. The boy must find a way to convince others of his importance.
He must find solutions.
The best would be to find another victim to decapitate before the others make up their minds.
But it's easier said than done.
He walks in the lead, followed closely by the 3 others. They decided or rather their leader decided, this woman at least twice his age with red lips and an arrogant gaze, to go straight to the lake and not look after the rest of the people who were with them before the whole fight with the savages .
Knowing well that he has no choice the boy remained silent.
But he knows that this women is as cold-blooded as a reptile.
He can't rely on her emotion to ask for pity or guilt.
Once at destination she will choose to solve the problem in the easiest way possible. If he was in the same position as her he would do the same.
The young man is not tall and he is not muscular.
At three against one, he has no chance.
His guts are boiling with anxiety. Despite the fact that turning his back on the enemy is not recommended he decided to be the one who walks ahead of others. He was also the first to suggest climbing trees to find the lake. His hands, unaccustomed to the exercise, are already red and a few blisters have formed. He has cold sweats and he is shaking a little.
On impulse when he climbed the second tree he lied to them and told them he saw the lake. In truth, they go in a completely different direction.
He saw in the distance the raging river that ran alongside the huts behind them.
He now uses this as a landmark and heads in the direction where the old man and his group fled.
If he finds them before the two girls and the guy get impatient, his chances of survival increase.
First because the others seem to have more scruples on the moral level for murder and then because the more they are, the stronger they will be against possible attacks ftom the sick people who populate this damn forest.
They are quick to take a break.
The boy, Two as Dust nicknamed him, sit against imposing roots.
From a distance he observes his companions who are also trying to sit down on something that is not too wet and avoiding the muddy ground.
The girl who doesn't take a step away from the leader holds her stomach with her head down as the other two beside her flirt. Their teamleader laughs then puts her hand on the forearm of the younger man before whispering something in his ear.
Two raises his eyebrows.
How do they still want to chit chat in this kind of situation? It is this kind of behavior that assures him that they are calm.
And that they also has an idea in mind.
Aren't they this comfortable because they are sure that once they have reached the lake they will be able to cross it?
In other words, that they have someone to sacrifice?
He thought about it well.
A plan is already taking shape in his head. Hoping to meet the others in this huge place is not enough to reassure him. In fact it seems to him very improbable although he desires it strongly.
A head is only worth two passengers, that is what is said in the dream.
But they are 4.
Someone in the group despite everything will have to stay here even if they decapitate him. He must sow doubt.
He must divide them.
If they end up two against two his chances of survival are more than doubled.
Of the three the best candidate is this girl. The one who is discreet, always in the shadows.
Her eyes under the weak light which pierces the foliage are of a dark green. Like the algae that invades a pond in black waters. Her thin, almost white lips pressing together in silence.
From what he understood when he fled into the mine there was a problem between the leader and this girl. She would have left her for dead and this fact seemed to be difficult for the girl to digest during the dinner at the castle. However she suddenly changed her mind and proceeded to forgive everyone involved.
The boy though doesn't believe that a simple sorry will satisfy anyone.
But it's hard for Two to know where to start since he doesn't know the details. How to approach the event without it backfiring on him. He pretends to glance vaguely at the forest when in fact he is again observing his companions. That's when his target move before him.
She get up while the couple if Two can call them that are too distracted to notice her. They even start kissing.
The boy meets the gaze of the girl who advances.
She tends to always stare at the ground but there at this moment when she looks straight ahead Two notice how cold her gaze is.
He doesn't need to start the discussion because she's the one who makes the first move.
