Chapter 25: Bree and the two Professors
Bree sat on the Bed Annie had prepared for her, not feeling like sleeping she was content to read the book she had gotten from the second-hand shop, interested in the myriad of plants in it that hadn't existed in the game.
Annie was also sitting on the bed, a respectable distance from Bree, and doing her version of resting by lying against the wall in a stance that made her look like a giant lifeless toy.
The second someone knocked against the door Annie shot up to her feet and changed outfits while running, appearing next to the door in her full maid outfit, button, and needle in hand as she opened the door just enough to deny any visible access to her master.
"Hello," Annie looked down to find the source of the voice, A Short Human woman with a large squirrel tail and little squirrel ears in place of human ears stood before the door, "My name is Jhoana Houstan," She Greeted Annie formally and with a little bow, "I'm one of the professors in charge of the lecture on old magics, I was told my Headmistress Milena that we had a last second guest speaker and I was wondering if she might be available to come to conference hall D on the fifth floor of castle two?"
"My Lady?" Annie turned to ask Bree the question, but found her already back in full gear, her spear in ring form, "Ah, I see, can you escort her?"
"Absolutely," Professor Houstan assured her, Annie opened the Door and Bree was surprised to meet someone slightly shorter than she was, even if only barely.
"Oh hello," She shook Bree's hand with Gusto, "I am Jhoana Houstan, Professor of Basic Magical Studies, you may call me Ana or Mrs.Houstan,"
"I am Bree," Bree told her, the lack of any other parts of her name starting to make her feel slightly rude during introductions, "Queen of Melodia, I have no first, middle, or last names, so I'm just Bree, no need to call me Queen Bree though, my kingdom's not so big I need people actively looking up just yet,"
Ana's eyes sparkled at Bree for a moment before she noted a fact most people usually did on their first meeting, to Bree's delight however she had something other than an insult in mind.
"Oh Look at your eyes," Ana squealed, "They're so adorable, I bet you were using magic before you even started walking,"
"I have never heard my mistress talk of her younger years," Annie noted, "Although it is known that she gained too much magical power for her body to withstand and had to forcefully change her race to one with a high upper limit,"
Bree looked over to Annie slightly miffed, but with no visible marking of it on her face Annie just bowed politely and she figured what was already said couldn't be unsaid with harsh words,"
"That's incredible," Ana's mystified tone now matched the sparkling in her eyes, "How did you do that,"
"Well," Bree chuckled, having not expected Ana to take the words at face value without so much as a suspicious look or question, "Maybe it's better if we walk and talk, we'll be standing here all day if we don't," Bree followed after Ana and began telling her about her Creation Chamber, taking care not to mention where it was located, and making sure she was fully aware it only responded to Bree's call so no one else could use it.
"Outstanding," Ana muttered, showing off her ability to multitask as she both took notes and escorted Bree to the conference hall, "When I was in Cleminz I heard a rumor that Demon Lord Mimzy has a similar device, but rarely uses it," Bree's eyes peaked, even if only slightly at that information.
"Demon Lord Mimzy," Bree mused in her head, "Argit said he was the oldest and strongest of the Demon Lords, and he has a unique item only found in player bases from the game," The Idea that Bree wasn't the only person who had been sucked into the game had passed her by once or twice. But thus far she had been so busy setting up roots, she hadn't yet had time to check in on it.
"Well, I am very old," Bree noted with a shrug, getting Ana's attention, "Could be Mimzy and I originated from the same era," Ana slowed to a stop at the statement and looked back at Bree for a moment, "He probably a different way to survive the meteor, or maybe he just walked it off? Me, personally, I panicked a little and just sent my home and the followers to live in it spinning across time and space," Bree chuckled at the notion before Ana spoke.
"You're from the time before the Lunar Sea?" Bree expected Ana to be suspicious, or maybe get mad at Bree claiming to be on par with the oldest and probably most respected Demon lord, but Ana once again didn't seem to doubt her words for a second.
"You're an awfully trusting soul?" Bree noted with concern, "That seems like a dangerous personality trait to have," Bree felt she had to call it out just in case Ana was humoring what she thought were little more than delusions or something, Ana, in turn, pointed to her nose.
"I can smell lies," Ana replied without skipping a beat, "They smell like burning toast, skipping past that what was it like?" Ana immediately cut off her question with a denial of it, "No, no don't tell me you have to tell Yorgan, he's the professor of Archaeology, he loves hearing about lost countries and their forgotten histories, Mimzy and his most loyal followers have given out very few official statements on their old country, and the last one was several hundred years ago," Ana picked up the pace, and Bree started hovering slightly to avoid having to pick up the pace.
Upon reaching the fifth floor Ana ran down a few hallways before arriving at one labeled C-D and opened the door, Bree followed her inside and got the feeling the room was much larger than it should have been based on the placement of adjacent doors, "Must be the same kind of Magic my home uses to be bigger on the inside,"
"Yorgan," Ana cheered, the small squirrel woman ran up to a man who rivaled Bella in height, after looking at him for a moment she realized he was a small giant, similar to the one Boris had killed before their discovery of Greenwater, only even smaller.
Unlike the Feral Giant, he was very well groomed, and wearing a large coat that seemed to be making the air colder, he turned to Ana, his skin a light blue with shining white hair, Bree recognized he was a Frost Giant, and then immediately questioned that fact upon remembering Argit telling her Ice Magic was a dead art.
"I take it our guest speaker has some interesting things to share?" He asked of Ana as she climbed up his back and perked on his shoulder.
"Yorgan," She squeaked in delight before declaring proudly, "She super mega old!" Yorgan laughed at the statement and then apologetically held up a hand to Bree. Still chuckling as he spoke.
"I'm..," He cleared his throat to try and kill the laughter, "I'm so very sorry Ma'am. Mrs. Houstan, as a Squirrel Beast Woman, is somewhat…excitable,"
"Oh no problem," Bree assured him, Ana having already earned more than a few points from Bree simply by her instantaneous decision to compliment her eyes. "I am indeed, super old, if only in a technical sense,"
"Oh?" Yorgan seemed equally as interested in the confirmation of age as he was in the use of the word 'technical', "Well take a seat, the sun has yet to rise and the lecture doesn't start for a good few hours, I'll have the kitchen send us something,"
"That would be lovely," Bree decided, not wanting to disturb Manfred or Boris at such a late hour as she imagined they were busy enjoying each other's company, and not wanting to pull out Annie just to hand out frozen dinner meals.
Bree took a seat in one of the free chairs and looked up at Yorgan and Ana, "No, how best to start?"
Bree started with the basics of her home, and the inhabitants, Yorgan listening quickly, Ana doing her best to do the same with limited success as she visibly had problems sitting still for any amount of time.
"Did you hear that?" Ana asked excitedly as Yorgan used one of his fingers to pat her atop the head, "A Harpy, those have been extinct for centuries!" Being aware that Ana could smell lies Yorgan was content to take everything Bree said at face value so long as Ana did the same.
Once Bree had finished telling them about the game world and mentioning the way she had gotten here, she realized that how she had gotten here part of the story should have been a lie, but didn't set off Ana's lie detector, indicating she couldn't smell a half-truth as Bree had indeed gotten sent flying across time and dimension to the new world, only not from the game world but form her original one.
"So you pre-date the Luna sea?" Yorgan asked with interest, "Fascinating, Did you ever meet Demon Lord Mimzy before the Meteor that formed the Lunar Sea struck the planet?"
Bree shrugged at the question, "Who could say," She replied without much thought, "I knew a lot of people, fought with a lot of people, completed in contests and the likes, I did once win a contest as the top in the world, but it sounds Like Mimzy was just as skilled so it's possible he changed his name after the events, trying to bury the embers of his past maybe?"
"Demon Lord Mimzy is a large goat man, with the tail of a Scorpian, I'm told he can change what his limps and even his tail look like but I've never seen any proof of that outside of speculation,"
"Ah yes," Bree knew of the race from the game, "A Changling Goat beast," She shook her head, "Well that doesn't much help, of the ten creatures that managed to hit number one in the world, three of them were Changling Goat Beasts, but none of them where named Mimzy, but the name change is always a possibility, or maybe he never bothered to compete,"
"I always thought Demon Lord Mimzy was a unique creature," Ana said in awe, "There used to be an entire race of him?"
"There also used to be an entire race of me," Bree added, "And Harpies used to be so numerous you could find them just about anywhere," Bree shrugged, "Surviving a mass extinction had the tendency to leave one as a rare or unique creature, if by no other means of being the last of their kind,"
"What are you?" Ana asked curiously "Oh do tell, do tell!"
"I'm an Elf," Bree used her hand to push her ears forward a little, Ana's response was to tumble off of Yorgans shoulder onto the floor, who took Ana's response as one that Bree was telling the truth.
"That's amazing," He whispered back, "No one's ever been able to find the fossilized remains of an elf…"
"Well," Bree scratched her chin, thinking back to the game world every player race started on an island for the tutorial and could return at their leisure for events and race-specific rewards, as the elven race hadn't been in the game to start with.
Bree had started as a Human simply because she didn't like the other four options cosmetically, upon Elves being added Bree had spent several sleepless nights unlocking all required pre-requests to unlock the race change option, not wanting to just start a new character.
"Technically speaking the Elves' home wasn't on the mainland," Bree muttered, gaining Yorgan and Ana's full attention, "It was an island a few weeks travel from it, but it was probably swallowed by the ocean when the meteor struck, I can't imagine many elves chose to die away from their homes, some probably died trying to sail home, and the rest where probably on the island when it sank,"
"Do you know where the island was?" Ana demanded as Yorgan began pulling on a few wall maps until he found one that she realized was supposed to be the original game world.
Yorgan and Ana wanted her to use it to pinpoint the location of the islands, but as Bree looked at the very inaccurate map she felt slightly insulted at how bad it was.
The City portion had somehow ended up in the center, the Volcanic section was missing entirely, and both The Forest and Snowy areas had seemingly been folded into each other and surrounded the entire city save for a section that she assumed was supposed to be the Moutnian and the continents Center, now shoved off to the westernmost side of the landmass, as though it had been added last moment.
She immediately reached into her inventory, and after some rooting around she pulled out a large rolled-up piece of parchment, and handed it to Yorgan.
"You can dispose of that," She told him, pointing to the wall map, "This is an actual proper map of the continent, prior to the meteor,"
Yorgan unrolled the map, instead of just a map of the continent it was a collectible item from an old event that included the locations of all the spawn islands in the world, there were three clusters of islands, each representing when the race dropped, the original five on the right, the second wave of seven to the right, and the final three to the top.
"Over to the right," Bree pointed to the cluster of islands, "I don't remember which one it was exactly, I was born Human and ascended to an Elf via hard work," Yorgan and Ana began fawning over the map.
"City names," Yorgan muttered, "Landmarks, is that a Volcano?" After looking around the map Yorgan pointed to one of twelve different colored circles that dotted the map, "What are these?" he asked curiously, "Small towns maybe?"
"Oh that's the location of the twelve Pillars of eternity, I didn't wanna lose my..." Bree's absent-minded answer slowly trailed off before she straitening up, remembering the Church of Salvo and what they might do for a map to their desired Pillar, "Opps," she chuckled as she reached into her inventory and pulled out the actual map, having handed off the one she had copied and drawn on since the Pillars didn't show up on the mini-map or the built in-game map, "Wrong map, that's my back up copy I've doodled all over," Bree swapped them out and returned her's to her inventory, "Don't tell anyone about that ok,"
"You know where the Pillars of eternity are?" Yorgan asked in shock, Bree was at least relieved he didn't seem shocked they existed or that there were twelve of them, "That's amazing, is it true they act as prisons for some of the strongest monsters in existence,"
"Yup," Bree confirmed, "and there's a good chance that if one was opened nowadays not even all the Demon Lords could stop it, so don't tell anyone I know where they are, don't wanna cause a mass extinction event now do we?" Bree laughed nervously, "But no seriously a lot of people will die,"
"I won't tell a soul," Ana promised, "And I'll give Yorgan a good chomp if he does,"
"Because between the two of us, I'm the most likely one to let it slip?" Yorgan eyed Ana who immediately changed the subject.
"Do you think I could see your race-changing machine?" Bree looked her up and down before answering.
"You're already perfect the way you are, what could you possibly want to change yourself into?" Bree had a suspicion as to what Ana's dream was and wasn't at all shocked to see she was right on the money.
"I could finally be big," She said in excitement, "You said it turned a horse into a human horse, maybe if I went as a Beast-woman, I'd just come out a better version of a Beast-woman, I could finally reach the top shelf without having to climb up the wall,"
"Well I'm sorry," Bree patted Ana softly atop her head, "But I'm the only one who can activate it, and you have to be willing to agree to work beneath me for it to work, and I get the sense you're rather fond of your job,"
"Yeah," Ana agreed, deflating slightly before suddenly perking up, "Oh, but there have been talks of cutback starting next year, and I might be on the cutting block, so if it comes to pass that my employee is terminated would you-"
"By all means feel free to come and join me in Melodia," Bree accepted her counteroffer without any hesitation, "I'll have you double the height within the day, and I'll even let you work under that Harpy I told you about, She's my librarian, and my collection is as old as it is big,"
"Back up job," Ana cheered, "And you said I should be worried about the school's talk of cutbacks," Ana stuck her tongue out at Yorgan who just shook his head.
"I was worried because I'd have to do your class on top of my class without any extra pay," Yorgan huffed, "Anyway I thank you for the map, I have a few adventurer acquaintances and I think they'd be willing to help foot some of the bills, an exploration looking into the island of the elves has a high chance to be profitable,"
"Well I'm glad I could offer the both of you something for letting me cut into your lecture," Bree continued patting Ana's head, who seemed thrilled at them being so readily handed out, "But I still don't know the exact plans for the lecture, so maybe we should get to business?"
"Oh yes of course," Yorgan rolled up his map, "Today's lecture is one ancient and forgotten Magics, As Ana specializes in Magical studies, and I in the ancient past we like to come together every year for the third year and tell them about the arts lost to time, but as with all things in the past, it is possible one day someone might dig up enough remnants of them to understand how they work, take for example the once lost art of Metal Magic, you see-"
Bree got comfortable patting Ana's head as Yorgan delved into a very detailed and long lecture on how metal-based Magic was theorized to have been lost, and how it was eventually found, and reintegrated into the world.
