Chapter 20: Lox Lotum
Bree, Olu, and Annie all walked through a Dimensional Door and came out in front of the large Greenhouse. Their wait was short as Milenaa swiftly came around the bend, looking put off as she looked at a clipboard.
"Bree," She greeted, sounding less than chipper "Good news and bad news,"
"I prefer Bad news first," Bree decided.
"The Professor in charge of Botany is somewhat uptight and he refused to comply with my demands you be allowed to teach the eighth-year class temporarily, I'm afraid you've been bumped down to teaching the first years troubled class,"
"I can deal with that," Bree smiled back.
"The Good news is the Professor in charge of weapon training was beyond thrilled to hear that Olu is here, he informed me you were the one to train him,"
Olu looked around at the school for a moment, stroking his mustache as he thought it over "His name wouldn't happen to be...hm, who was it that wanted to teach again? William maybe?....no no it was Marcus Honeycut," He decided "Correct?"
"You are correct," Milena replied with a smile "If I remember correctly you used to attend school here, would you mind showing yourself to the staff dorm room? The dorm for the male staff is the tower furthest to the left of the main entrance, Bree you and your Attendant can follow me, I'll take you to your rooms, you'll have the troubled class all day,"
"Ah, so they're the kind of trouble that requires them to be in one place all day?" Bree questioned, "I assume it's like that because they have a history of skipping classes?"
"Right on the money," Milena replied "Yesterday ended a week-long holiday break, so they're gonna be extra rowdy after that week of free time,"
"Oh yes, a store owner mentioned it to me when I was buying a book yesterday, my purchase was interrupted by three teen boys trying fairly poorly to squeeze him for protection money,"
"That sounds like the kind of behavior expected from the trouble class," Milena said with a head shake, "Please pay them no mind, over half of the trouble students are from royal families and expect to be treated as such, Ignoring the first rule of Pandora, As a student the only thing that marks you as special are the marks you get in your class,"
"Marks as in grades or Marks as in bruises?"
Milena shrugged at the question "Depends on the class, after all the point of sword training is to finish a practice fight with as few hits taken as possible,"
"I think I'll stick to using grades over marks if you don't mind," Bree replied "The word marks is already sounding less like a word,"
The group made their way to the middle castle and Olu bid Bree a good day before going left while they all went right. They walked down several hallways and past several doors before arriving at the women's staff tower, Bree and Annie followed her up a flight of stairs to what Bree pinned as being the seventeenth floor, they walked to one of several rooms that made up the small common area and they were introduced to a room about twice the size of the room Bree's Maids lived in.
"Living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom," Bree could tell Annie was judging the accommodations harshly, "Well Annie, make yourself comfortable, I'll be back at the end of my work day I suppose," Annie wished Bree a good day as she left the room.
"Oh before you leave," Milena took the top paper off of the clipboard before handing Bree the clipboard "Use that to mark whatever it is you'll be teaching and the grades of the students,"
"Alright," Bree put the clipboard in her inventory, "now then, since I've been here once," Bree cut a doorway into the air "I never have to use the stairs again,"
"You have to teach me that," Milena said as they walked out and returned to the Greenhouses "It's such a time saver,"
"It's just an enchantment," Bree said simply as she reached into her Inventory, after a moment she pulled out an Ivory Walking stick and quickly enchanted it with the same spell she used to open doorways. "There we go, simply cut a doorway in the air with the bottom part while imagining where you want to go, you can only open doors to places you've been before though," Milena attempted to do so and a doorway to an office appeared and Milena cried a little.
"Never again will I have to walk half an hour from my dorm room to my office," She punched at the air in celebration, "Thank you so much," Bree poked her head in and looked at the office for a moment, noticing a female Cyclops working in a corner of the office, Bree pulled out and looked back to Milena.
"Happy to help Mila," Bree pulled away, Milena enjoying the stick far too much to question the odd choice of nickname Bree had given her, "Now then, the troubled class will be in the Smallest of the Greenhouses," Mila wished Bree luck before going into her office, laughing like mad at her new teleporting walking stick before the door closed behind her.
Bree easily spotted the Small Greenhouse and walked inside, it very much earned the description of small, there were eleven small desks set up in the center, with a long table set up in front with planter boxes along the wall opposite the door, Bree got the feeling there wasn't usually a teacher in the room, as vague instructions where written on a chalkboard that sat behind the long table.
"Do your work before days end," She read "Place your worksheets and or projects on the table, and wait for a caretaker to take you back to your dorms," Bree frowned at it before walking over to the table, sitting on it was a simple note
"Try not to embarrass yourself newbie - Professor Sweets," Bree turned the note over and found a list of eleven names.
Bree read the roll call sheet as she waited for her class to arrive, and after several minutes the door opened and two adults in matching uniforms opened the door.
"Who's that?" A Girl asked as a group of eleven students filed in, four girls and seven boys all wearing matching Blue pants and jackets, with white undershirts and Black Shoes.
"Hello, I'll be your substitute teacher for a little while," Bree informed them, she could already feel trouble brewing once she said the word substitute but chose to ignore it "I am Bree," After a few moment Bree confirmed no one was interested in greeting her "Now then, your teacher failed to tell me what it was your class was doing up until today, could someone please tell me?"
Bree stood in silence as several students snickers and others completely ignored her and began talking to one another. After a moment three boys in particular caught her eye, the same three she had watched attempt to shake down a store, the one who had been scared of her seemed to be the only one that remembered her.
"Hey," He whispered, Bree easily hearing his words with her advanced hearing "That's the lady who caught us at that run down shop yesterday,"
"So what?" The one who had been the leader replied with a yawn "we're untouchable, just relax for once and leave this to your older brother,"
"Ah, so you three are brothers," Bree said, getting the class's attention as she read the names and found the three with matching last names, "Leroy, Lester, and Lenny Snicket," She said with a snicker.
"Yeah," The Older brother said with a smug smile "Snicket, I'm Leroy Snicket eldest son of King Snicket, Ruler of the Desert Nation of Oasis," The Older brother smiled, "So bow before me peasant," Leroy stood up suddenly pointing at the floor as he stared at Bree "I'm serious, Bow,"
"Sit down," Bree said without hesitation, long since done with all the people who demanded she bow to them "The Number one rule of this school is that every student's worth is determined by their grades,"
Leroy stood his ground with an annoyed look and Bree saw his self-obsessed speech coming a mile away, "You think I'm someone to trifle with? I am a prince, you're just some lowly Botanist! I am of royal decent and you will…" Leroy was stopped in his rant when Bree pulled out Argit's Fan Ax.
"Do you know what this is?" Bree questioned as she held it up, her voice and face never shifting from her default expression of being relaxed.
"What, you think some fancy golden stick…" Leroy was cut off again, this time when his younger brother who had been scared of Bree smacked him upside the head.
"Lenny," The third brother said, revealing himself to be Lester
"That's the enchanted weapon Demon Lord Argit used to kill the Dragon King!" Lenny whimpered "Don't any of you read the morning paper!?" Everyone looked at him dully.
"So she's a thief?" One of the girls questioned with interest, She looked like the fusion of a Hobgoblin and a Human.
"No," Lenny cried out "Yesterday when Argit visited the capital he declared that he lost a fight with the leader of a new nation," It took Leroy longer than it should have to realize what that meant.
"That Bug-eyed thing is a Queen?" He demanded in confusion before biting his lip, "As…as the future king of Oasis you best show me respect, otherwise I'll personally destroy your puny nation with the might of Oasis's army,"
"Funny, King Odren made the same threat," Bree laughed "So when his army of three hundred arrived, I killed them all, then tormented Arlow Razzor before punting him across a lake, then I made Odren grovel at my feet, and told him if he ever bothered me again I'd topel his entire nation,"
"Woot," one of the boys laughed, He was the Tallest one in the room, He almost passed for a Human, but the faint blue hue of his skin, the markings on his neck, his clawed hands, and their webbing gave away he was some kind of Fish Man, "I think this is the first time I've felt the need to respect a teacher,"
"Also," Bree added as she turned to Leroy, "Did you just casually forget the 'I defeated Argit in a fight' thing?" Leroy took a step back, "I already told you to sit down did I not?" Leroy and Lenny quickly took their seats and Bree began calling roll call.
There were three boys huddled up in the back, one was a tall Lizard monster with two front-facing horns that reminded her of the blades on a war axe, He had long black hair, and large eyes and was simply named B, no last name given or extra letters, just B.
Sitting next to him was a boy with spiky long purple hair, wearing rectangular spectacles whose name was Bellamy, the shirt to his school uniform was noticeably too large for him, and his hands were hidden in the sleeves.
The third member of their group was an average-looking kid with short curly brown hair named Chauncy.
The last remaining boy in class was the Fish man, he was very large in size, and muscular, His name was Jasper. A set of Identical twin girls with shoulder-length jet-black hair sat in the back staring blankly at her, their names were April and May, the Half Hobgoblin girl with short neatly kept brown hair was named Hanna, and next to her was a short girl with long white hair named Kipo.
"Alright then," Bree called out once she had everyone's name, "who here can tell me what was the last thing you did in this class?"
"Worksheet," one of the Twins replied casually as she stared intently at Bree, interested in the change of routine.
"What about?" Bree added.
"I dunno," she replied before turning to her sister.
"I dunno," her sister repeated, their voices sounding exactly the same.
"Alright well I'm just going to assume you were doing nothing important and make my own lesson plan," Bree walked over to the side of the class, a long line of empty planter boxes lined the wall opposite the door, inside were random bits of trash and a few dead flowers.
"First up everyone is to come and clear this trash,"
"Do I look like a maid?" Hanna called back dully.
"I'll clean it," The Lizard B declared with an absurd amount of enthusiasm before sharply turning to the twins April and May "So my darlings don't have to,"
"Stop looking at us like that Lizard Perv," They demanded in Unison as he stared at them with just as much intensity as they had stared at Bree with.
"Come on B," Bellamy said with a yawn, "Let's go clean out the planter," Bellamy and Chauncy both struggled with all their might to get B to look away from the twins while pulling on his tail to drag him away from fawning over them. Both Jasper and Kipo got up and helped with the cleaning.
Hanna, the twins April and May, and the three Snicket Brothers all stayed seated, although Lenny attempted to get up his Elder brother shot him a glare and he stayed seated.
Bree wanted to chastise them but decided it wasn't worth the trouble and instead turned to the students who were doing as they had been asked, B was using his shirt as a trash bin while his two friends filled it with the trash piled up in the Planter.
"I wonder how this place got so bad," Bree pondered as she picked up trash and began disintegrating it in her hand.
Kipo instantly rushed to Bree's side at the question "We're the only ones who use this Greenhouse," she informed her with a fierce determination "It's only really used for us, and small groups for detention since any normal class of twenty-five would be too big to fit in here,"
"If you don't mind me asking," Bree looked down at Kipo, getting a teacher's pet kind of vibe from her, "Why is it you're all in the troubled class?"
"The Snicket brothers are here for constantly ditching class and mouthing off," Kipo said instantly "I'd heard they'd gotten expelled but I guess their dad got them back in over the break," "Chauncy and his crew are always doing something to get themselves in trouble, Hanna and I were…doing things we weren't supposed to and got ourselves put on indefinite watch, Jasper went on a small rampage and destroyed half of the lunch room when someone stole his lunch, and the Twins both sent several boys to the infirmary for flirting with the other Twin,"
Bree looked over to B and found he was once again swooning around the Twins, who simply called him a perv before his two friends pulled him away again.
"They stopped beating on B when they accidentally knocked him out a window on the 17th floor," Kipo informed Bree "And he immediately got out of the creator he'd made and climbed back up to continue praising their existence like they hadn't just almost killed him,"
"Scary guy," Bree noted as B began rapidly picking up the trash he had dropped, "Come along then, we have some major cleaning up to do,"
Bree held her hand up and the class watched as the pile containing all of the trash from the room was burned away by Golden flames, leaving only ash on the ground.
"Now then," Bree smiled "We can do some real Botany, How many of you know how to use Botanical Magic?" A low murmur ran across the class before B called out.
"I've heard about it, but I've never actually met someone who could use it," Bree looked at him for a moment.
"But there's a Botanical teacher here," She noted in confusion "Professor Sweets right?"
"Well yeah," Hanna confirmed "But he uses water and earth magic to till and water the soil, he doesn't know any actual plant-based magic,"
"I'm not sure if it's a real field of magic," Bellamy added "I'm pretty sure there's only one actual magical spell in Botanical magic, the rest of it is mostly a form of alchemy"
"Why yes," Bree confirmed, "However the spell in question, Lox Lotum, literally does whatever you want it to do, so long as you want it to make a plant,"
"So it doesn't do anything," Leroy noted, "It just makes grass grow and junk like that,"
"Why yes, if all you can think to do is something boring the spell will do boring things, But..." Bree walked over to the planter and put her hand into the soil "I want someone, anyone, to think of something exciting," After a moment Kipo raised her hand and Bree pointed at her with her free hand
"I don't know if it's exciting," she said nervously with a quick sideways glance to Hanna "But what about a flower made of Amethyst?"
"Oh that would be beautiful," Hanna declared "I love Amethyst's,"
"Lox Lotum," Bree replied simply, her magic flooded into the soil and a rose burst to life, with thin nearly transparent sheets of amethyst functioning as its petals.
"How about a flower that's also a sword?" Jasper challenged.
"Lox Lotum," Bree said simply, her magic filled the soil, and a thick flower stem burst to life, its roots wrapped around Bree's arm as she held it up petals burst to life for the sword hilt, Followed by the stamen growing long and sharp in the shape of a blade.
"Stronger than steel," Bree declared before waving it, the blade wobbled in the air "Very flexible, and…" Bree pointed the blade towards the door and the Blade grew instantly, piercing the door in an instant "Can be used at long range," Bree could tell the Sword had won most of the class over, especially Jasper who was now standing up with a shine in his eyes.
"That said it is still a plant so," Bree held it over the planter box and the roots unwrapped and dug themselves into the ground, after a moment the Sword flower stood strong in the soil, the Blade shriving in size until it was all but gone "It's not to be carried around like a normal sword, more accurately you simply grown one in the middle of a fight should your opponent disarm you,"
"I wanna try that," B's eyes sparkling with determination as he got to his feet.
"But you use Wind magic," Bellamy attempted to Chastise him.
"Plant magic's kinda cool," The Twins decided as they looked at the sword.
The Entire building shook slightly as B slammed his foot to the ground and stood dramatically clenching his fist "I'm gonna become a Plant master," B amended fiercely with a sparkle in his eye while Bellamy simply face-palmed himself and Chauncy did his best not to laugh at his friend.
"Yes that's the Spirit Lizard Perv," Jasper cheered as B made his way to the planter, "Turn that Perviness into a passion for Power,"
"Lox Lotum," B demanded, resulting in an astounding amount of nothing.
"Your friend mentioned you use wind magic," Bree noted as she pulled her clipboard out and used her finger to write on it "Try incorporating that into your plant, it should work as a crutch until you get used to how the spell works,"
B simply nodded and focused hard on the back of his hand, there was silence from the class as he stared at the planter intently before yelling out loudly "Lox Lotum," Magic flooded the soil and Bree could tell he had put too much into it when he wobbled and nearly fell to the floor, being saved last moment by Chauncy.
"Easy now B," Chauncy said as he held his friend up. Several vines shot out of the soil and began wrapping around one another, Bree watched with interest as it took the shape of a small circular tower, four sets of Long Petals grew out and Bree recognized what B had made.
"Why, it's a Windmill," Bree laughed as the four petals began slowly rotating in place "Take note if you focus too much on making it look nice without being experienced with the spell you're going to drain yourself dry, but for the effort, I'll give it an A" Bree but down the name B with an A next to it, the words first lesson above it.
"Hm," The Twins said in unison, Bree unable to tell if they found the Windmill impressive or stupid.
"Now would anyone else like to give it a try?" Bree asked, looking around the class in search of any takers. Chauncy set B down on the table and both he and Bellamy took a Planter box, the Twins April and May both got up and took the Planter box closest to Bree, Kipo made her way to her own Planter and was joined by Jasper when it became clear Hanna had no interest in going near the planters, Lenny forced his brother Lester up and they left Leroy behind, Leroy got up and reached out to pull them back.
"Leroy," Bree warned "Don't make me come over there," Leroy sat back down, irritation etched on every part of his face as he glared at his brothers.
Bree watched silently as the students slowly began making their own plants, Bellamy showed his magic wasn't elemental in nature as he made a small bush with armored leaves. Chauncy ended up with a mushroom that started barking at him.
"Let's see," Bree said as she looked at their work, "Protection magic, and Familiar summoning?"
"That obvious?" Bellamy asked as he tapped his bush.
"I'm so sorry," Chancy said to the mushroom with an apologetic bow before raising his hand and removing the Familiar Spirit from the mushroom, causing it to crumble to dust. "I doubt it liked that," He said nervously.
"I'll give your mushroom a B due to the briefness of its existence, and the armored bush an A,"
"Lox Lotum," Lenny said nervously, producing a glowing Fern, Lester followed suit and made a Mushroom that started swelling, Lenny pulled his brother out of the way and Bellamy raised his hands upon seeing what was happening.
"Dome," He declared, covering the mushroom with a small Dome, there was a popping sound and the Mushroom exploded like a small firecracker, its burning pieces fell into the soil, Bellamy dropped his dome and groaned.
"Always with the explosives," He said irritably.
"That was awesome," Lester declared as he held his hand out to make another.
"Absolute Barrier," Bree declared, Putting a wall between Lester and the Planter "Yeah, I don't feel like dealing with exploding mushrooms, you get a C, and you can go sit back down," Lester grumbled and Bree dropped the barrier once he was back in his seat. "Oh, and I'll give the glowing Fern a B,"
"Whoa," Bellamy said in awe "I've never seen an Absolute Barrier before,"
"Kind of lame," Leroy chastised "A Plant and Barrier user, how did you even beat Argit, you trick him into beating himself or something?"
"She did make a gem flower, and she used fire to burn the trash away, so she probably knows four schools of magic," Hanna offered "Ya'know like Professor Yorgan,"
Bree didn't bother answering the question and instead walked over towards Kipo and Jasper, Kipo had grown a flower that had three glowing eyes, and Bree figured it had psychic abilities as the dirt around it was also floating, The Class watched as it floated upwards and then suddenly vanished.
"Hu," Bree said with a laugh "I'm sure that won't cause any major harm, A" Bree turned to Jasper, who had been patiently waiting for Bree to give him attention.
"Lox Lotum," He declared, Bree watched as a large Picture plant blossomed forth, it had visible teeth along the brim of its picture and the leaf that usually covered its top.
"A Carnivorous plant with teeth," Bree noted, she felt her hair stand on end as the Picture plant began building up an electrical charge, "and it's electrical in nature, how unique," Bree held up her hand and domed the plant as it attempted to electrocute her. "also violent, You also get an A,"
Jasper fist pumped at his grade while Bree walked over to the twins, who had made two Bonsai Trees, One of them had made one that had a little waterfall that fell from the leaves into a hole in the Tree, and the other one had leaves made of dozens of thine gemstones and a layer of rock around the tree, Bree noticed her own Gem Flower had fallen over from lack of support.
"Water and Earth magic," Bree noted "They work very well with Plant magic, Another set of A's"
"Thank you," They said in unison, Bree unable to tell either of them apart in the slightest.
"Now then, Leroy and Hanna you'll both be getting an F for not participating," Bree found no complaint from them and finished her grading "Alright then," She declared as she put the clipboard away "let's move on to the boring part, who here know's the different parts of a flower, what they do, and what they are called," A groan rang out from across the room and Bree smiled, "I'll take that as no one knows. Now everyone takes your seats and I'll begin with flowers,"
