Chapter 69: NGT: Striking Serpent
Jason kept his eyes on Dani as she left the arena. She had her head hung low, and her body language told him she was upset with the outcome. 'She did all she could. She just lacked in experience.' Jason sighed as he sat back down. He wanted to go check on Dani, but he figured that she would like some time alone to digest her defeat right now.
Besides, Adam's fight would start right away, and he had an obligation of sorts to support him as well. 'I'm glad I paid the guards to escort them up here if either of them lost. I hoped they wouldn't need it, though.'
Jason's eyes narrowed on the stage as Adam and the female cryomancer took to the stage. Jason had to ask Harry what her name was.
"Her name's Amy Gibbons. She's one of the bookies' favourites to win it this year. If you're interested, your boy Adam there has been slated as the dark horse at this stage." Harry chuckled as he clued his grandson in. Naturally, he was just excited because he had placed a large bet on Amy to win.
It was not because he doubted Jason's skills. It was more because he thought he had seen everything that they both had to offer, and Adam came up lacking. At that point, the bell rang for their fight to begin.
Amy threw out five pieces of ice that were shaped like knives. Adam felt like he was being underestimated as he easily dodged them while moving closer to his opponent. Amy limited herself to throwing out small pieces of ice, and the fight continued like that for a while. The audience began to wonder if something was wrong.
Where were the ice walls and the giant waves she used in the last fight! Where had all of that flashiness gone!
Adam was wondering the same thing as he was forced to use his blade alongside his acrobatics to deflect the projectiles sent his way. Amy seemed intent on trying to keep her distance. As she got closer to the edge, she started trying to suppress him enough to move around him towards the other side of the stage, where there was more room.
Adam picked up on her intentions and started advancing diagonally to cut off her path of retreat. Amy appeared to be frustrated as she struggled with her opponent and began to make mistakes with where she aimed her ice projectiles. Many of them began to go ridiculously wide, meaning that Adam did not have to dodge them at all.
As Amy was only a single step away from going out of bounds, she decided to change tactics. Using her Power, she formed two ice daggers and seemed to want to enter into a melee battle! When the audience saw that, they guessed why Amy was no longer as dominant as she was in the previous fight.
It was actually pretty simple! She must only be able to summon a certain amount of ice! Whatever she used to fuel the ability must be running low due to her constant use of her Power over the past two days and then this fight as well! That showed that her Power had a fatal weakness. She had no staying power in a prolonged battle at this stage of her growth.
Down on the stage, Adam had come to the same conclusion as everyone else. Since it had reached this point, he was pretty much guaranteed to win. Initially, even he thought that this would be his last fight. 'Should I give her a chance to surrender?'
Adam frowned as he studied Amy's determined expression. 'No, she would probably take that as an insult. She wants to show that she's not entirely useless yet.' Adam sighed beneath his hood and half-face mask. He did not really feel good about this fight now, but endurance was one thing that a Guardian required.
Since his opponent had already run out of gas, then she had no place becoming a Guardian right now. Adam rushed in as Amy prepared herself for a vicious up close slugfest.
Her ice daggers let out a sound like crystal being struck every time they clashed with Adam's Orochi. Every time she tried to counter, Adam would slither out of her reach with his flexibility. Amy groaned as a kick landed on her stomach at the same time that Adam deflected one of her daggers using his blade.
Before she could react, Adam swept her legs out from under her! She groaned as she felt her entire body lose contact with the ground for a moment. During that split second, Adam flipped over her and grabbed her clothes along the way! Using the momentum from his flip, he altered Amy's path and threw her out of the ring!
Or so he thought! Amy was unwilling for the fight to end there. She created an ice chute with a swing of her hand to catch her before she went out of bounds!
Adam frowned as Amy saved herself from his move. She showed a great deal of determination, but she was pretty much just torturing herself at this point. 'She probably has a few more of those saved in case she needs them.' Adam sighed when he realised that there would be no easy way out.
Adam's expression became dark as he glared at Amy, returning to her feet. Her legs were shaking, but Adam did not care. He sprinted forward and jumped into a corkscrew-like spin with his feet aimed at Amy's chest!
A cracking noise entered Adam's ears when his feet connected with her chest. As she was knocked off her feet, he could see her swinging her hand to create another chute despite the pain that she was evidently suffering from!
'Don't blame me then!' Adam swung the Orochi and activated its whip form! If she was unwilling to give in, then he had no other choice but to shred her body until she lost consciousness!
Amy's eyes went wide as she watched the bladed whip approach. In that instant, she regretted pushing herself so far. As she closed her eyes and waited, nothing happened! Her back slammed on the chute, and she slid back onto the ring. As she slowly opened her eyes, she saw Adam's whip suspended in mid-air!
A voice rang out over the arena. "Contestant Adam has won this fight!"
The audience glanced from Adam on the stage to Rust's private box before erupting in loud cheers! Jason leapt to his feet and joined them while Harry wore an expression that looked like somebody had just kicked his puppy! 'All of those credits!'
