Chapter 62: New Guardians Tournament (2)
There was no corridor behind the door. Instead, there was a room. This room had a single long window that looked onto what could only be described as a lab. However, what made Jason feel suffocated was what was inside that lab.
A large metal and glass tank stood in the centre of the room. Its insides were full of a bright blue fluid with a monster floating in it. Jason's curiosity forced him to take a few steps forward to get a better look.
The creature's torso and limbs looked humanoid. However, it had a reptiles head and tail to complete its figure. Its whole body was covered in hard looking green and black scales. 'What… Is this?'
Jason looked on at the creature as his mind ran rampant. 'Is it a beast that used to live in this area during the Old World era?' Jason felt like they had discovered something important. They just did not understand precisely how important just now until they could figure outwit was going on down here.
"What is it?" Harry asked with a trembling voice.
"I'm not sure… Shall we take a look?" Jason suddenly grinned as he said that. He had spotted a door to the side of the viewing window that would give them access to the lab.
"Jason, I don't think we should mess with something like that!" Harry sounded panicked as he rushed forward to grab Jason's arm before he could open the door.
Jason raised an eyebrow at Harry briefly before looking at the door again. "Gramps, how long has this place been sealed? That creature is probably dead. I'm guessing that the liquid is what is keeping its body from deteriorating. There's nothing to worry about."
Jason put on a gentle smile as he waited for Harry to release his arm. Harry was still hesitant even though Jason's explanation made sense. "Fine… Let's take a look."
Jason grinned as he grabbed hold of the handle and turned it. Nothing special happened as they entered the room, which surprised Jason. He had expected for something to happen, but perhaps that was just his mind playing tricks on him.
'Anyone would feel off in a place like this.' Jason grumbled to himself as he walked around the lab.
With a bunch of information that he did not understand, what looked to be reports lay on several of the work surfaces. Jason frowned as he looked through several sheets of paper before shaking his head.
Harry limited himself to standing by the door and staring at the tank with a wary expression. Jason sighed as he ran his hand across an old keyboard, only to jump backwards in shock as a sound came out of the computer that it was connected to.
Jason's eyes went wide in bewilderment as he watched the computer boot up. He had never seen anything like this! Well, he had seen computers before but not ones that actually worked! Needless to say, he was enthralled as he watched the images on the screen change until they settled on a Log In screen.
Jason's ecstasy deflated as he realised that he would need a name and password for it to go further. 'This probably holds the valuable information! How the hell does something like this work!'
"The basic Computing Skill costs 20 PP, but I don't think that alone will help you." Syssie sighed from Jason's side. "There's no doubt there's valuable technology here, but somehow I don't think it will help our current condition."
Jason nodded in agreement. This place made his Biology and Chemistry Skills go crazy, so he was inclined to believe that everything this place held would be related to those fields. Jason turned towards Harry and heaved a deep sigh when he saw he still had not come further into the room.
"There's nothing useful for us here. We should search the rest of this place."
Harry nodded slowly without taking his eyes off of the tank. He only returned to normality once they returned to the reception room. Harry was reluctant to search anywhere else alone, so Jason gave up and left him behind as he continued the exploration alone.
Hours passed by as he went through every room, but they all pretty much held the same things. Lab equipment, computers that he could not access, and only two other rooms had special containers with different creatures inside.
'This place is a bust for now. The storage room downstairs will be decent to set up a workshop and to hide those credits I've got lying around. But that's it, I couldn't understand the first thing about that room that seems to create the electricity to power this place.'
All in all, the Nest had left him with mixed feelings. It was pretty exciting to discover these things, and he was confident that he could put this place to use in the future. However, he also felt let down because it was not quite what he had expected and was practically useless for him right now.
At best, it would just be his secret workshop and storage area until his Power grew further. 'We should call it a day. There's no point in wasting any more time here for now.' Jason returned to the reception room and explained what they had found.
He stressed to Harry that they had to keep this place secret and set up a workshop to study the equipment. Hopefully, with time, they would be able to sell stuff based on Nest's contents.
Harry surprisingly agreed to Jason's evaluation. He looked disappointed that it was not the treasure trove that he had imagined, but the creature that he had seen thoroughly discouraged him from ever returning here. Harry's instincts screamed at him whenever he looked at it. As if he was about to be eaten by a lurking predator at any moment!
As the floor slid back into place and hid the entrance, Jason could not help but wonder about something.' I'm assuming they called it Nest because of those creatures, but how many other sites are there?' Jason could not help but wonder just how many secrets the Old World was hiding…
