Chapter 129: Serum (4)
"Damn! Another wall!" Sentinel frowned as he tried to peer through the fog, to no avail.
The tremors steadily grew more violent as they continued to feel their way through the terrain. Jason kept his ears perked up for any sounds of something moving in the fog. Besides the behemoth whale, anyway. 'This couldn't be any worse. That thing could kill us with a sneeze, never mind what will happen if it starts a serious fight…'
It was only natural for the two of them to be concerned. They were blind, fumbling around in the fog, and there were at least two creatures out there that could kill them without noticing. Jason's mind was still racing as he tried to figure out what was threatening the whale. He could only hope that whatever it was, failed to find the whale.
That would make their escape a lot safer. As they took another turn and stumbled over some more debris, they heard it. An animalistic wail came from the shoreline. 'I guess the hunter has arrived…' Jason frowned as Sentinel continued to lead him through the fog.
It was an eerie thought that any moment could be their last, and there was nothing they could do about it. The intensity of the tremors took a sharp rise as the strange wailing noise sounded again. 'Is it pissed because it can't find its prey?'

-Antihero]
Jason did not want to find out the answer. However, Sentinel's pace suddenly picked up as he heard some scuffling noises nearby. Now and then he would pause for several moments before continuing on. 'Fog Crawlers…' Jason thought as he kept his mouth shut.
That was the last thing they needed! However, Jason noticed the sounds seemed to be travelling in the same direction as them! 'They're trying to escape as well!' It was the only reason he could think of for them revealing themselves after staying hidden.
Jason stopped walking and tried to get Sentinel to wait as well. But he was so focused on escaping that he dragged Jason along behind him! 'Come on! Pay attention!' Jason felt his palms becoming sweaty. He knew they could not continue like this!
He lashed out with his foot and kicked Sentinel's leg! 'Ow! What the hell!' Although that made Sentinel pause, he was treated to a throbbing pain in return.
Sentinel raised an eyebrow as he leaned in close to where Jason's face should be. "What is it?"
Jason was taken aback by the hostility that was in his voice. But then he thought about their current situation and realised that it made sense for Sentinel to be on edge.
"We'll die if we keep going!" Jason hissed through his teeth. "The Fog Crawlers are escaping in the same direction as us. Once we leave the fog, we'll be easy prey!"
Sentinel became wide eyed at Jason's reason for kicking him. He focused on listening to their surroundings and realised that his apprentice was right. 'We need to find somewhere to hold up then.' He felt a headache brewing as he considered the situation.
They would definitely die if they left the fog or turned back. There was a chance of being eaten or crushed if they stuck around. 'Well, possible death is better than certain death.' Sentinel nodded as he began to feel his way through the fog again.
This time they followed any wall they came across as they searched for a door. However, most entrances to the buildings had collapsed, trapping them outside as they continued to move inland. Jason's complexion paled when the tremors suddenly changed into earthquakes.
In the distance, they could hear buildings crumbling down. Whatever had invaded the area was clearly losing its patience. 'How long can the whale hide for? Maybe it's not a good idea to hide inside one of these ruined buildings.' Jason heaved a helpless sigh as he considered the buildings may fall on them.
After all, their structure was no longer what they used to be in their prime. So there was no way of telling if they could hold up under the earthquakes. It took nearly another half hour of searching before Sentinel found the entrance to a small building.
He swiftly led Jason inside and to their surprise, they could see again. Just like with the aquarium, the fog refused to enter the buildings. Jason frowned as he briefly contemplated the reason behind it, but he could not make any sense of the phenomenon.
"Well, at least if we die we might see it coming…" Sentinel let out a soft chuckle.
"How's that a good thing?" Jason rolled his eyes as he turned to stare out at the fog. "The way this is going, we could be trapped here for some time."
"That's true but at leas… Jason!" Sentinel suddenly cut off his reply and yelled as Jason screamed!
A device flew from Sentinel's belt and chained Jason to the floor, using spikes to create an actor point. Jason trembled as the chains wrapped around him and prevented him from being dragged into the depths of the building.
Sentinel drew his pistol and fired at the Fog Crawler's tongue that had wrapped around Jason's leg! The smell of scorched meat flooded the room as a croak of pain came from somewhere further inside. Although the tongue had been severed, the remaining part flopped around a bit before it went still.
"I thought you said they don't come in the buildings!" Jason could not help but complain as a cold sweat drenched his back.
"I never said that… I only said that they would not enter the aquarium…" Sentinel snorted as he kept his cybernetic eye trained on the hall that the attack had come from. "Plus, it's only a baby. It isn't full grown yet so we don't have to worry."
Sentinel had caught sight of it with his enhanced vision. Which was the only reason that he knew that information. In his mind, this was a good chance to kill one of them. They usually escaped thanks to the fog whenever he injured them in the past.
