Chapter 126: Serum
Jason was almost jumping out of joy as he rushed to the table with the new box. He was eager to begin digesting it right away. 'Let us take a look…' His eyes flashed as he rummaged through the box and began spreading out the papers within on the desk.
As they looked through the material, they could see that it definitely looked promising. 'This must have been written with the intention of explaining things to someone who may not understand scientific jargon.' Jason smiled because this meant that the report held the full procedure for creating the serum.
Not only that, but it detailed it in a way that he could understand. So, despite the fact that he did not understand the science behind it yet, he would still be able to recreate it.
"It says here that it's only a temporary effect…" Syssie hummed as she scanned several pages at once. "But, how would you use it?"
"It depends… This stuff seems to have been created to give the test subjects a brief timeframe of boosted strength or speed. But, that doesn't mean we have to use it the same way." Jason grinned as he continued reading. "This is merely the start of it. If I'm right, we could potentially extract a rapid healing ability from a beast. Then inject it when injured to heal ourselves quickly."
Jason's eyes flashed as he thought about all the ways this technology could be used. 'We'll have to start simple… But if we can get our hands on a powerful healing ability, then that could counter the side effects of what happens when I buy knowledge beyond what my brain can handle.'
A slight smirk appeared on Jason's face. He was thinking of going through a period of rapid development again. If he could make this reported serum into a reality, then maybe, just maybe, he could finally unlock what he needed to deal with Syssie.
'That would be one problem taken care of, at least. But the question still remains of whether I'll have to upgrade her again later.' Jason sighed but did not let the thought get him down. His eyes moved over the report as he skimmed through it, exchanging thoughts with Syssie as they went along.

-Antihero]
By the time they reached the end, they had come to the conclusion that this serum was most likely made in the Nest by Highrise. Which meant that they were now under pressure to return there to attempt it. 'How can we convince Sentinel without revealing the Nest?'
That question had them both stumped. Jason could try saying that he was concerned for his Gramps. Or he could even claim that he wanted to check on his store. The problem was that he was unsure if either of these would be a good enough reason for Sentinel.
"We still have some time to come up with something…" Syssie tried to sound optimistic, but Jason was not convinced.
"It would still be better if we could deal with this sooner rather than later." Jason heaved a sigh as he placed the report back in the box and tossed it to the side. They had everything that they needed from it, so the report itself was now useless.
"True… But look on the bright side. There's bound to be a report stashed in here that contains information on what beast we'll need to get our hands on." Syssie grinned as she turned to look at Jason's dejected face.
When Jason realised what she had said, a passionate expression crossed his face. 'That's right! With all of this information, there's bound to be something suitable! If we can just find the right reports, then we won't have to go through trial and error!'
Jason's eyes scanned the room as he tried to estimate how much that they still had to go through. 'We've barely touched on the knowledge stored in here. It's only the stuff that Sentinel pointed out that we've been looking at. But, what's in the other boxes then?'
Jason was now beginning to wonder if there was any other useful information that he could steal from this place. Even if it would not be useful to him for some time. After all, he was pretty much looking at a free lunch. He would have to be an idiot not to take advantage of it.
Besides the Serum report, over the next few days, Jason accumulated a wealth of knowledge. It mostly covered the unusual abilities of the beasts that had appeared by the time the Nests were set up. Most people would say it was worthless, as there was no telling if any of these beasts had gone extinct since then.
However, Jason and Syssie used the knowledge to cross-reference what types of abilities were most likely to appear in specific types of beasts. For example, lizards tended to develop tougher scales or rapid healing. Ape types leaned towards becoming stronger or more agile depending on their size.
Of course, these were just the physical traits. Hardly any creatures in the reports had developed anything close to what humans of the current era could do. However, Jason kept in mind that it was likely more of such creatures that had something beyond a physical power had appeared since the time of the reports.
'We need to find out if they succeeded in merging Powers.' Jason sighed as he thought about it. He somehow felt that someone who had multiple abilities probably existed at some point. But he wanted to know what the risks were of attempting something like that using a more advanced version of the serum.
A few more days passed of fruitless searching. Eventually, Sentinel turned up to collect him. It was time to return to Bridgend for a while. However, Sentinel's remaining human eye went wide when he saw the pile of boxes. He had not entered this room since day one!
"How did you get through so much?" Sentinel's smile twitched a little as he kept glancing at the small mountain of discarded boxes.
"Hm? Oh, I didn't." Jason shrugged his shoulders as he stared at his mentor. "There's not much that we actually understand amongst all of this. So we focused on the reports we thought we could gain something from."
Sentinel glanced at Jason in disbelief. "You mean you could tell pretty quickly what amongst all of this was useless?"
"None of it useless really." Jason spread his arms in a gesture of helplessness. "It just has a different value. We came across some things that covered the experiments though."
"And?" Sentinel had a glint in his eye as he stared at the pair. "Can you reproduce what they were up to?"
Jason made a show of slowly scratching his chin while sighing loudly. "No. Not right now at least. It's going to take time to fully understand the theories behind it. Then there's the problem of testing whatever we come up with."
"Why would that be a problem?" Sentinel frowned as he looked around the room.
"For one, I doubt we're the same as the humans who existed in the past era. So it's safe to assume the effects could be different. In other words, what was safe for them may kill us instead." Jason shook his head as he tried to deter Sentinel from prying too far into this for now.
"I see..." Sentinel responded slowly. "But we still have to show some results of your visit here if you want to return. Is there anything we can use?"
Jason frowned as he glanced at Sentinel. This was the first that he was hearing of conditions attached to him being in the Nest. 'Makes sense I guess. Sentinel probably reported this place to the Emperor. Which means you probably need clearance to visit this place.'
Jason sighed again as he wracked his brain. 'I guess I could try giving them the information on the different beasts. Like what each species is most likely to develop. But I'm not sure if that would be enough. They may have already worked that out without the information stored here...'
"The only thing I can give you just now is some research on the different beasts. Plus what I understand of the basic serum they used in the Old World." Jason saw the look of excitement on Sentinel's face and hurriedly continued to make him understand the situation better. "Its effects aren't permanent and I can't give you the full procedure. But if you give some papers from that box there to the researchers they might make better progress."
Sentinel hummed for a moment while slowly nodding. "I guess you have a point. This should be enough to secure your help here again. Pick out the papers the researchers should focus on. Anything that you don't understand. We can spread them amongst different people so they don't realise what we're looking into..."
"No problem, I'll get on it right away..."
