Chapter 5: Chapter 5:Trials of the awakened
Kai's eyes snapped open the moment the first rays of light pierced through the small window of his room. The thin sheets on his bed were tangled around him, evidence of a restless night. He had barely slept, too consumed by the weight of the decisions ahead. The world had changed in a single moment when the portals had opened, and now he was part of something far bigger than he ever could have imagined.
The room, which had once been his sanctuary, now felt like a cage—a reminder of everything he was about to face. Kai had spent years living on his own, learning to survive after the loss of his parents, but that survival had always been personal. Now, the stakes were different. Survival meant navigating alliances, power struggles, and the constantly looming threat of other awakened. He had no choice but to adapt.
Sitting up, Kai swung his legs over the side of the bed and rubbed his face. The notifications from his system buzzed in the back of his mind, as they always did. The growth was slow, but steady. His stats were improving, his abilities sharpening. But he knew it wasn't enough. The others—X, Yurei, the council—were right. He had a long way to go.
A knock on the door broke his thoughts. He stood and opened it to find X standing in the hallway, her expression as stoic as ever.
"Get dressed. It's time to begin your training," she said, her voice unyielding.
Kai nodded, his heart racing. "What kind of training?"
X's eyes locked onto his. "The kind that separates the weak from the strong. The kind that will push you to your limits. You'll need every ounce of strength and skill if you're going to survive what's coming."
With that, she turned and walked away, expecting him to follow. Kai hesitated for a moment before grabbing his jacket and heading out. He had no idea what to expect, but he was ready for whatever came next.
The building was a maze of hallways and steel doors, each leading to different parts of their operation. The deeper they went, the more it felt like a military base—tight, controlled, and heavily fortified. The farther they moved, the more intense the atmosphere became. Other awakened were scattered throughout the facility, some sparring, others practicing their skills. Kai could feel the tension in the air; everyone was preparing for something big.
X led him to an open training area—a large, expansive room filled with various weapons, training dummies, and large holographic screens displaying tactical maps and data. It was a place where the awakened honed their abilities, trained their bodies, and learned to survive the harsh new world they found themselves in.
"Your first trial will test your combat skills," X said, gesturing to the area in front of them. "You'll face different types of challenges—some physical, some mental. The goal is to see how well you adapt."
Kai swallowed hard. He had fought monsters before—small, Rank F creatures. But this was different. These weren't just monsters. These were other awakened, people like him, who had powers far beyond his own. He could feel the weight of the challenge pressing down on him.
"You'll fight against a Rank E," X continued, pointing to a tall man standing by the far wall. He was muscular, his presence intimidating. His skin seemed to shimmer with an ethereal glow, a telltale sign of someone with a powerful system. He stood still, his hands resting at his sides, waiting.
"His name is Jiro," X introduced. "He's one of the most promising members of our faction. He'll test your combat abilities. Don't hold back."
Kai took a deep breath, mentally preparing himself. He had fought creatures, but fighting someone who could think, someone who had a system like him, was entirely different. His mind began to race with possible strategies, but he knew the most important thing was to stay calm. The moment he panicked, he would lose.
Jiro's eyes locked onto Kai, a small smirk playing on his lips. "Let's see what you've got, kid."
Without warning, Jiro moved. His speed was blinding, and before Kai could react, the man was right in front of him, throwing a powerful punch toward his head. Kai's instincts kicked in, and he ducked just in time, the fist narrowly missing him. His heart raced as adrenaline flooded his system.
Jiro wasn't slowing down. Another punch came, this time aimed at his midsection. Kai sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the blow, but the force of it sent a gust of air past him, leaving him momentarily disoriented.
"Focus!" X's voice rang out. "Don't rely on just your instincts. Use your mind. Find a weakness."
Kai clenched his fists, forcing himself to think. Jiro was fast, powerful—his attacks came like a storm. But Kai had something he could use: his intelligence. He had to outthink him, not outfight him.
As Jiro lunged again, Kai pivoted to the side, grabbing a nearby training staff. He spun it in his hands, using it as a makeshift weapon to deflect Jiro's next strike. The staff collided with Jiro's arm, sending a shock through Kai's body, but it worked. Jiro's arm was momentarily off balance.
Kai pressed the advantage. He swung the staff low, aiming for Jiro's legs. Jiro leaped over the strike, but it gave Kai the opening he needed. He used the momentum to launch himself forward, slamming his shoulder into Jiro's chest and forcing him backward.
The force of the impact stunned Jiro for a moment, but Kai knew it wouldn't be enough. He had to finish this. Kai reached into his inventory and pulled out one of the weapons he had acquired during his previous battles—a short blade with a jagged edge, something the system had rewarded him after his fight with the Rank D monster.
Before Jiro could recover, Kai lunged forward, aiming for a vital point. But Jiro reacted just in time, his own power flaring as he blocked the strike with a burst of energy that sent Kai flying back, crashing into one of the nearby training dummies.
Kai groaned, his body aching. Jiro stood over him, breathing heavily but clearly still in control.
"You're fast," Jiro said, his voice surprisingly respectful. "But you're still too green. You rely too much on your system."
Kai struggled to his feet, ignoring the pain. He wasn't going to let Jiro's words discourage him. He had come here to learn, to grow stronger. This was just the beginning.
X's voice rang out again. "Enough. This isn't about winning. It's about learning. You're not supposed to defeat Jiro today. But you did well. Better than I expected."
Kai breathed a sigh of relief, but the pressure was still there. This was just one trial. There would be more to come, each one more difficult than the last. But for the first time since the portals had opened, Kai felt a glimmer of hope. He wasn't just a survivor anymore. He was becoming something more.
As Jiro walked off, Kai turned to X. "What's next?"
X's eyes were cold, but there was a hint of approval in her gaze. "Next, we test your magic."
Kai braced himself. He was starting to realize that this was only the beginning. And the path ahead was far from easy.
