Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Abyss' Call
The silence after the battle felt suffocating. Even though the Abyssal Order's representative had been defeated, the threat was far from over. The portalstill pulsed with dark energy, its very existence like a wound in the fabric of reality. Kai's breathing was slow, each inhale feeling heavier than the last as the adrenaline started to wear off.
"Is it over?" Eun-Seo asked, her voice quiet but steady as she scanned the wreckage.
Kai shook his head, eyes still locked on the swirling mass of dark energy. "No. This is just the beginning."
The team was battered. Jiro's face was streaked with dirt and blood, his breath shallow from the exhausting fight. Han, his hands still crackling with leftover energy, was visibly tired but determined. Eun-Seo's sniper rifle was slung over her shoulder, her normally confident demeanor replaced by quiet contemplation.
"We can't let this portal stay open," Kai muttered, his voice filled with resolve. He could feel the Abyssal energy radiating from the rift, and the power was beginning to infect the surrounding area. It wasn't just a matter of closing the portal—it was a matter of stopping whatever forces were being summoned into the world.
Eun-Seo spoke up. "We need a way to destroy it. It's not like we can just walk up and stab it with a sword. This kind of magic is beyond us right now."
Kai turned to her. "Not if we play it smart." He glanced at the Abyss Core—the object they'd taken from the armored enemy. The dark energy it emitted had seemed to hum in sync with the portal. He felt a flicker of recognition. The Abyss Core was the key to all of this. It was linked to the portal. But how?
Jiro's voice broke through his thoughts. "Kai, you have that weird system, right? What if it can give us something to counter this?"
Kai's eyes sharpened, the thought pulling him out of his haze. "I'll check."
Kai closed his eyes for a moment, focusing on the system's interface in his mind. The familiar notification window popped up, and he quickly scrolled through his inventoryand skills.
[SYSTEM ALERT]
New Quest Available: Close the Abyssal Portal
- Objective: Use the Abyss Core to close the portal before the Abyssal Order can open it permanently.
- Rewards: Unknown
- Failure Penalty: Permanent damage to the surrounding region, potential world destabilization.
Kai's fingers hovered over the quest notification, a growing sense of urgency stirring in him. The stakes were higher than they had ever been. They couldn't fail.
He quickly checked the inventory to see what resources he had at his disposal. It was sparse. A few weapons, a few mana potions, and several runes that could enhance his abilities. Then, there was the Abyss Core—a dark, pulsating object that seemed to pulse with raw, chaotic power. It wasn't just an item; it was part of something much bigger, something more dangerous than he had originally realized.
The system pinged again, offering a potential solution.
[SYSTEM ALERT]
Skill Available: Abyssal Containment (Rank C)
- Description: The user can contain or suppress dark energy for a short period of time.
- Mana Cost: High
- Additional Effect: Can seal smaller rifts temporarily, preventing larger breaches.
- Requirement: Abyss Core.
Kai's heart skipped a beat. Abyssal Containment. It was exactly what they needed.
He quickly selected the skill, and the system asked for confirmation.
[SYSTEM ALERT]
Are you sure you wish to use the Abyss Core to activate Abyssal Containment? This will consume the Abyss Core.
- Warning: The core's energy is unstable. There is a risk of backlash if used improperly.
Kai hesitated. The Abyss Core was the key to stopping the portal, but it was dangerous. If the system was right, the backlash could destroy them all.
But there was no time for second thoughts.
"Yes," Kai confirmed, and immediately, a surge of energy erupted around him. His body was engulfed in dark light, and the Abyss Core started to glow violently, a ripple of chaotic mana emanating from it.
Kai's mind was flooded with visions—images of ancient, forgotten places, of worlds teetering on the edge of destruction. The Core's power was overwhelming, and he could feel the darkness trying to consume him, trying to pull him into the rift.
"Stay focused," he muttered to himself. The core was part of him now, and he had to use it to contain the rift, not let it control him.
The dark energy that had once surged through him began to shift, becoming more manageable as he drew on the core's power. He could feel the rift in his mind, and he extended his will toward it, pushing the power back.
"Everyone, get back!" Kai shouted, his voice commanding.
Jiro, Han, and Eun-Seo retreated, sensing the rising power. The energy radiating from Kai was nearly unbearable, and the air around them vibrated with the tension.
The Abyssal Containment skill began to take effect. Kai could feel the pull of the portal fighting against him, but his resolve was stronger. His hands trembled as the dark energy in the rift began to stabilize, slowly pulling itself back from the edges of the city.
But then, a warning flashed in his mind.
[SYSTEM ALERT]
Warning: The Abyss Core is unstable. It is reacting with the portal's energy. The longer the containment lasts, the more dangerous it becomes.
Kai's eyes widened. If he didn't finish this soon, the core might detonate, taking everything in its blast radius with it.
He pushed harder. His mind focused on sealing the rift, on cutting the flow of Abyssal energy from the world. The strain was nearly unbearable, and Kai could feel his mana reserves dwindling. Sweat poured down his face as the energy fluctuated. It was a delicate balance.
Just as he thought it was about to collapse, a crackling sound filled the air—the portal's energy began to subside, the swirling mass of darkness shrinking, collapsing on itself. Kai's heart raced.
"Just a little more," he gritted through his teeth. His vision blurred from the effort.
Finally, with one last push, the portal closed, the rift sealing with an explosive shockwave that sent a ring of energy pulsing outward. The ground trembled, and the air crackled with the aftereffects.
But the battle wasn't over.
Kai collapsed to his knees, exhausted from the overwhelming strain of using the Abyss Core. The portal was closed, for now, but the feeling of unease lingered.
The team rushed to his side. Eun-Seo knelt beside him, her voice soft but concerned. "Kai… are you okay?"
Kai nodded slowly, trying to catch his breath. "I… I think we did it. But this isn't over."
Han looked around, his expression grim. "The portal is sealed, but the Abyss Order won't stop. They'll come after us harder next time."
Kai stood shakily, looking over the devastated city. The battle was won, but the war was far from over. There were more portals, more rifts, and more enemies waiting in the shadows.
And he knew the worst was yet to come.
