The Heart of Zero

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Blazing Cage

Yahageshii's fury blazed even brighter as he heard the taunt, the flames on his fists roaring like an unbridled inferno. His teeth clenched as he let out a guttural growl, stomping onto the ground with such force that the rooftop tiles cracked beneath his feet. He launched himself like a beast unleashed, his attacks raining down in a relentless storm. Yet, the man in shadow, Shingin, remained calm, standing firm as he parried each strike with precision and poise, his every movement a testament to unshakable composure.

Yahageshii's fire-clad fist thundered toward Shingin's chest, a direct strike that could shatter bones. Shingin raised an arm to intercept, the flames scorching his sleeve and filling the air with the acrid scent of burning fabric. He stepped back smoothly, his other hand shooting forward like a spear to strike Yahageshii's shoulder, sending the fiery aggressor stumbling toward the edge of the rooftop.

Yahageshii steadied himself quickly, his face twisting into a savage grin. Crouching low, the flames around him flared hotter, painting the rooftop in hues of molten red. The very air wavered with the oppressive heat. In a split second, Yahageshii sprang forward again, his fists lashing out with the ferocity of twin fire serpents.

Shingin's eyes narrowed as he shifted his stance. His movements were fluid yet unyielding, a dance of defense and counterattack. The collision of Yahageshii's blazing punches with Shingin's deft deflections sent shockwaves rippling across the rooftop. Dust and debris swirled in the heated air, and the rooftop railing shuddered under the strain.

Fueled by rage and desperation, Yahageshii roared, summoning a surge of power. The flames on his fists intensified, swelling into a roaring blaze that enveloped his entire body. He became a living inferno, the heat warping the air and setting the stage for a climactic onslaught. With a guttural roar, he hurtled toward Shingin like a comet descending to earth.

Shingin's gaze sharpened. He stepped aside, swift and calculated, dodging Yahageshii's fiery charge. Yahageshii's fist crashed into the rooftop, shattering the tiles and sending flames crawling through the cracks. The intense heat radiated outward, turning the entire rooftop into a battlefield engulfed in fire.

As Yahageshii's flames lashed out in all directions, Shingin moved with an elegance that belied the ferocity of the battle. His hands wove through the air, creating currents of energy that deflected the searing heat. Yahageshii's wild, flame-laden attacks were met with an unshakable resolve as Shingin's palms sliced through the fire like the blade of a cold wind.

Sensing his advantage slipping, Yahageshii poured every ounce of his remaining strength into his next move. Letting out a feral cry, he pushed his flames to their absolute limit. The intensity of the fire turned the tiles beneath his feet to ash, and his eyes glowed with a maniacal red hue. He lunged forward, a blazing hurricane of raw power and fury.

In the blink of an eye, Shingin sidestepped, fluid as water. His elbow struck Yahageshii's ribs with bone-crunching force, making Yahageshii stagger in pain. But Shingin did not relent—pivoting with inhuman speed, he delivered a palm strike to Yahageshii's chest. The blow resonated like a thunderclap, sending Yahageshii hurtling backward.

Yahageshii hit the ground hard, rolling to the edge of the rooftop. The flames surrounding him sputtered and dimmed, reduced to flickering embers. He struggled to rise, his body trembling with exhaustion and the strain of overusing his Alien Soul. Yet his eyes, burning with hatred and frustration, remained locked on Shingin.

Shingin stood unmoved, his figure framed by the dimming glow of the battlefield. His cold gaze bore into Yahageshii, piercing through the fire-wielder's defiance like a blade. The air grew still, the oppressive heat fading as Yahageshii's flames subsided.

"Is this all you have?" Shingin's voice cut through the silence, low and laced with disdain. "For all your posturing and borrowed power, this is your limit?"

Yahageshii's fists clenched tight, his body wracked with exhaustion yet still trembling with fury. He refused to admit defeat, the thought gnawing at his pride. But the truth was undeniable—his strength, bolstered by the blazing soul force he had inherited, was no match for Shingin's unyielding might.

The winds swept across the rooftop, carrying away the acrid smoke and heat. The fiery battlefield was reduced to smoldering ruins, and the sky above seemed to open up, cold and unforgiving. Shingin took a single step forward, his shadow falling over Yahageshii like an omen.

"You've relied too much on power that isn't truly yours," Shingin stated coldly, his tone devoid of sympathy. "That borrowed strength can only carry you so far. And now, you see where it ends."

Yahageshii's vision blurred as his strength ebbed away. He struggled to hold onto his pride, to stoke the flames of his defiance. But as he stared up at Shingin, towering above him like an immovable monolith, a seed of doubt began to take root in his heart.

And in that fleeting moment, Yahageshii glimpsed the abyss between borrowed power and true strength.
