Chapter 94
Episode 94: Secret Mission ②
“The Eald…”
Argus’s voice stiffened at Lord Giorg’s command. After all, circulating not just Eald but any drug in Galvate would undoubtedly result in the death penalty. And since it was decided that the most dishonorable treatment would be applied, it was no wonder Argus’s voice turned rigid.
“Ah, of course, do not circulate any of the Eald you obtain. If even a single piece is circulated, the Karmais Viscount House will be finished.”
“Gasp!”
Argus let out a scream at Giorg’s murderous aura. He was forced to understand that Giorg’s threat was no bluff—it was deadly serious.
“Giorg… that brat again.”
“Huh?”
Argus couldn’t immediately process Giorg’s sudden statement. It was completely unexpected.
“What is there to fear from Giorg? Without the name of Zafing, he’s just a brat who can do nothing!”
Ignoring Argus’s reaction, Giorg continued.
“E-even if you’re a Marquis, we are still Viscounts. Such lawlessness…”
Giorg’s words carried no inflection. It felt like he was simply listing facts.
“Ah…”
Argus finally understood what Giorg was saying. It was the exact same words his grandfather Avery had used to berate Giorg the other day.
“P-please forgive us!! My grandfather was enraged and not in his right mind at that time!! I beg for your mercy!!”
Giorg raised a hand to stop Argus and spoke calmly.
“What are you misunderstanding?”
“Huh?”
“I have no intention of getting worked up over the ramblings of an old fool.”
“……”
Argus was left speechless by Giorg’s words.
(W-what does this mean? Then why did Lord Giorg… bring up my grandfather’s words… Ah!)
Argus, who had been struggling to grasp Giorg’s intent, suddenly realized it.
(There were only three of us there… but Lord Giorg knew the content of that conversation… He must be showing us that there’s nothing he doesn’t know about the House of Karmais.)
Cold sweat poured down Argus’s entire body as he understood.
“It seems you’ve understood.”
“Y-yes.”
Argus nodded quietly at Giorg’s words. With the family’s affairs being so thoroughly monitored, it was certain that if even a single piece of Eald were circulated, the entire House of Karmais would be wiped out in an instant.
“You will need to make at least three large transactions.”
“T-three times?”
“Yes, and the House of Zafing will provide the purchase funds.”
“Huh?”
Argus couldn’t help but give a clumsy reply. He had assumed the House of Karmais would be the one funding the Eald purchases.
“The story is that the House of Karmais is financially struggling and has turned to smuggling Eald.”
“B-but… currently, the House of Karmais isn’t in financial trouble…”
“Not currently, no.”
“Y-yes.”
Here, Argus felt a sense of unease at Giorg’s words.
“Y-you can’t mean… our family’s wealth…”
“Hoh, you’re getting a bit smarter.”
Giorg’s reply was completely devoid of enthusiasm.
“You’ll have a reason to visit the Zafing Residence for financial arrangements, won’t you?”
“Y-yes.”
Argus realized that Giorg’s words were a signal to pass on the information.
“May I inform my father and grandfather that the financial crisis is staged?”
“No.”
“W-why not?”
“If the crisis isn’t real, the risk of exposure increases. I don’t trust you all that much, you see.”
“Y-yes.”
“Argus, don’t betray my expectations. Misunderstanding the meaning of these words will be your end.”
Argus began to tremble violently at Giorg’s words. It was the same phrase Giorg had uttered to Argus and Carmine when Gazel was executed. For Argus, these words were a mental shackle, leaving no room for even a hint of rebellion against Giorg.
“Go.”
At Giorg’s command, Argus bowed shakily and stumbled out of the office with unsteady steps.
“My lord… isn’t this too much intimidation?”
Cain, who had been standing by, spoke to Giorg. He felt that Giorg’s threats were pushing Argus too far. If a person is cornered too much, they might take unexpected actions, which could jeopardize the mission.
“It’s fine. If he acts out, we’ll just eliminate him.”
“Understood.”
Cain bowed quietly at Giorg’s words.
