The Grim Fate of Those Who Arouse the Wrath of the Most Dreaded Marquis

Chapter 41

“That’s quite the impressive move…”

Giorg muttered to himself as he skimmed through the report that had been sent to him.

At Giorg’s murmur, Aisha and Roy exchanged glances. Though Roy was often lighthearted, he would never interrupt his master, Giorg. That’s why he didn’t call out to him. Both Roy and Aisha knew that Giorg was deep in thought. They also knew that their turn would come when Giorg found himself stuck in a mental maze.

(When the royal castle fell, most of the nobles present were killed on the spot… Shortly after, the former Duke Zabeil and a coalition of regional nobles began systematically purging the central nobles from their territories… A thorough elimination, huh?)

Giorg couldn’t help but be inwardly impressed by the speed at which the regional nobles, led by Duke Zabeil, had acted during the turmoil in the Gildrug Kingdom.

The regional noble army attacked the territories of the central nobles but didn’t take control. Instead, they moved on to the next noble, and within just half a year of the chaos breaking out, they had completely driven out the central nobles. After finishing the purge, the regional noble army simply returned to their own territories, leaving the commoners of the central nobles’ lands largely unharmed.

The captured royal family of the Gildrug Kingdom was taken to the Zabeil Border Duke Territory, where King Orutas II was forced to sign a declaration of independence before being executed alongside his queen.

With the establishment of independence, the Zabeil Border Duke Territory changed its name to the Zabeil Kingdom.

(The territories of nobles who didn’t participate in the founding of the Zabeil Kingdom were basically ignored… Considering the possibility of foreign intervention, you’d think they’d hurry to take control… But they didn’t.)

Giorg couldn’t help but ponder why the Zabeil military had expelled the former lords but then chose to leave the territories untouched rather than take control. He didn’t think it was foolish. He was certain there was some deeper intention behind it.

The Gildrug Kingdom was by no means a small country. Considering its national power and the vastness of its territory, it could easily be called a major power. For a regional force like Zabeil to drive out the ruling class in just half a year was extraordinary. It couldn’t have been a spur-of-the-moment decision; they must have been planning this meticulously for years.

If that was the case, then there must be some reason for leaving the territories of the former nobles untouched.

(Without rulers, there would be no one to maintain order. That means public safety would decline. In the territories of the central nobles, various factions would likely rise up… And new rulers would emerge. But these new forces would lack experience in governance…)

Having thought this far, Giorg concluded the Zabeil Kingdom’s intentions.

“…So, for the Zabeil Kingdom, the commoners of the central nobles’ territories are not under their protection… Or perhaps… they’re sacrificial pawns.”

At Giorg’s words, Roy and Aisha exchanged glances again. They sensed that Giorg was viewing the Zabeil Kingdom as a potential threat.

“Roy.”

“Yes, sir!”

“Issue orders to investigate how the Zabeil Kingdom is handling the Karmius Highway and the Remdoren Highway in the former Gildrug Kingdom. Also, find out what’s happened to the remnants of the former central nobles.”

“Yes, sir!”

“Aisha, urgently investigate how the turmoil in the Gildrug Kingdom is being talked about within our country.”

“Understood!”

Having received Giorg’s orders, Roy and Aisha immediately sprang into action.

“Whether Zabeil is planning to control the central nobles’ territories or not… we’ll find out from how they handle the highways. And… there’s no information on the Crown Prince, the Second Prince, or the Princess. Are they imprisoned… already eliminated… or sent to another country?”

Giorg muttered to himself as he continued to ponder.

“Normally, you’d think the Flastarl Empire… or within the Gildrug Kingdom, or perhaps even us. In that case, we’ll need to keep an eye on them.”

Having made this judgment, Giorg began writing a report.
