Calix’s path up the mountain proved much more treacherous than expected. The higher he climbed, the worse the surroundings became. The trail was nothing but rocky terrain, with thorny bushes on all sides. While the soldiers had since cleared a path, it must have been a rough experience for Asella when she had passed this way.
‘She made it through here,’ he thought.
It was obvious what the situation must have been; she had rushed to flee into the mountains, not caring about following the proper path.
It wasn’t totally unexpected, but Calix felt his stomach twist at the realization. He couldn’t help but imagine the desperate situation that had led her to choose the dangerous forest over being captured by him, which only worsened his mood.
Calix suddenly spotted something caught on a nearby branch, fluttering in the wind as he pressed on.
‘This is…’
Reaching out, he grasped a torn scrap of fabric, feeling its soft material – It was Asella’s.
Calix clenched his fist tightly, crumpling the delicate material but he couldn’t care less. He couldn’t afford to lose even the slightest trace of her. Better to trap her completely, leaving no gaps, and just as this scrap was now in his possession, so too would Asella soon be.
Once she was in his hands…
But his thoughts were interrupted as several familiar forms emerged from the shadows, dropping to one knee before him.
“Did you find her?”
“Yes, My Lord. She is nearby.”
Calix’s lips tightened. He began to move again without any further words.
He was curious how Asella would react upon seeing him. Whether she would scream, burst into tears, or struggle to get away.
But it didn’t matter either way. His wife was a woman with a naturally delicate heart. Threats, coercion – he had so many cards he could play, and eventually, things would turn out the way he wanted.
