“Sister?”

“Mariel, we have to leave here immediately.”

Asella’s voice was strained. Seeing Asella’s pale, frightened face, Mariel was able to tell what was happening. She immediately sprang up from her seat, grabbing her robes.

“You can’t miss even the slightest trace. Scour the entire area!”

“Yes, sir!”

The shouts of soldiers in the not-so-distant distance could be heard. The echoes of hurried footsteps, sounds of their horses pounding hooves, and murmurs of people filled the air.

Asella finished her preparations to leave, then firmly secured a cap ribbon under Mariel’s chin. She also wrapped a large scarf around Mariel’s neck, ensuring her face would be hidden even if they ran into any soldiers.

Just as Asella took Mariel’s hand and opened the door—

“Have you seen a group with a woman and a young girl?”

The voice from outside made Asella’s heart drop. They were the grand Duke’s soldiers. The inn’s front entrance was wide open since it was still daytime, and a knight on the outdoor patio of the restaurant across the way was questioning the innkeeper and random people who were unlucky enough to come to the inn on this day.

Asella quickly turned back and locked the door. There was no time to waste.

“Sister?”

“Are you sure that Priest Roshan is on our side?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I used mind reading to know, and I’ve seen his aura too. He said he wants to help us.”

“Alright, then…”

Asella pressed her lips on the portal, her trembling hands holding it.

Woooosh! The white stone vibrated faintly and then emitted a bright light. Soon, a giant circular vortex appeared before them – it was the portal.

“Mariel, listen carefully to what I say.”

Asella crouched down and gripped Mariel’s shoulders. She forced herself to slow down her quickening speech.

“When you get to the temple, the first thing you must do is find Priest Roshan. Until then, no matter who asks, you must never reveal your name. Do you understand?”

“What about you, sister?”

Mariel asked, sensing something odd in the air. Asella ducked her head, pretending to button Mariel’s robe. It was something she’d prepared herself for, but somehow her eyes gre hot and her throat tightened.

Clearing her throat, Asella spoke again.

“I’ll finish up what I need to do, and then I’ll follow right after you.”

“What do you need to do?”

“There’s something I have to take care of. Something very important.”

Asella smiled brightly, trying to reassure her sister.

“Just go ahead and wait for me. I’ll be there soon.”

“You promise you’ll come?”

“I promise.”

Mariel hesitated and couldn’t easily enter the portal, feeling uneasy. She kept looking back, and Asella waved cheerfully at her. After much deliberation, Mariel finally nodded, seeming to have made up her mind.

It was the moment the child stepped into the portal. A pillar of light erupted, and Mariel’s figure vanished in an instant. Asella, who had been staring blankly at the spot where her sister had just been, slowly pushed herself to her feet.

“… I’m sorry.”
