Chapter 19: Astonishing Everyone (Part 1)
The Trauma First Aid Center's opening ceremony was accompanied by a formal event.
Director Xia, alongside several deputy directors and heads of the surgical departments, stood in a neat line at the steps in front of the Emergency Department entrance.
Below them, doctors, nurses, postgraduate students, and interns from various departments gathered—essentially anyone who was free joined in to make the event livelier.
First, Director Xia delivered an impassioned speech. Then, the department heads took turns pledging their selfless dedication and teamwork to strengthen and grow the center.
Finally, with a grand flourish, Director Xia lifted the red silk drape.
The words "Trauma First Aid Center" in gleaming golden letters were revealed.
The crowd erupted in applause.
Only a few days after the center's establishment, at around 7 a.m., its dedicated hotline was put to use.
A nearby factory had caught fire, and the higher-ups ordered Sanbo Hospital to immediately dispatch both a helicopter and ambulances to participate in the rescue operation.
Both aerial and ground teams were mobilized simultaneously. The helicopter could carry five people: two crew members, one doctor, one nurse, and one space reserved for a patient. It was also equipped with advanced emergency medical equipment, including a ventilator.
The helicopter was the first to arrive, landing on a football field near the incident site.
The doctor and nurse, carrying emergency kits, proceeded on foot to the accident scene.
Thick smoke coiled upward like a giant dragon.
The surrounding area was chaotic. Armed police had cordoned off a large perimeter with barricades, but people still crowded around, refusing to leave, pushing and shoving against each other.
Fire trucks, painted red, were stationed around the site, their high-pressure water jets crisscrossing as they sprayed the collapsed building. Ambulances, with their red lights flashing, lined up nearby.
The fire had started early that morning, and while it had been extinguished, the building had collapsed. Eleven people were buried beneath the rubble, eight of whom were firefighters.
Finally, another person was pulled out.
"Clear the way! Clear the way!" Firefighters carrying a person on a stretcher emerged from the thick smoke.
"Stay with us, Qiangzi! Don't give up on me!" A firefighter supporting the stretcher shouted, his voice cracking with emotion and tears.
"What's the situation?" The deputy mayor overseeing the rescue operation, helmet on his head, immediately rushed over. Others followed.
"It's one of our own," a firefighter reported urgently. "He's conscious, but his right upper limb has been crushed into multiple pieces, and one of his fingers is missing."
"Quickly!"
"Which hospital is the closest?"
"Sanbo!"
"Send him to Sanbo Hospital! Sanbo's ambulance!"
"Over here!" A doctor raised a hand as the ambulance pulled up. Paramedics sprinted over to take over the stretcher.
The severed limb was carefully cataloged: wrapped in sterile gauze, placed in plastic bags, and then stored in the ambulance's refrigerator for dry preservation. Meanwhile, an intravenous line was opened in the patient's forearm, and saline was already being administered. Blood tests were conducted using the vehicle's automated diagnostic equipment. The Emergency Department was alerted to prepare red blood cells and plasma.
"Move! Back to the hospital!"
"Traffic report: the roads are gridlocked—it's rush hour."
"Gridlocked? Damn it! Traffic police! Get a patrol car and a few motorcycles to clear the way! If anyone refuses to make way, flip their cars over!" The deputy mayor swore.
"No need. Our helicopter's already here, parked on a nearby football field. We'll transport the patient there by vehicle and fly him directly to the hospital. It'll be much faster."
"A helicopter? Good! This patient is in your hands. We'll send someone over shortly."
"Stay strong, Qiangzi! Brothers, back into the ruins—let's go!" A few firefighters, without hesitation, charged back into the debris.
"Report, Mayor: six people have been rescued—four firefighters and two workers. One has been sent to Sanbo Hospital, while the remaining five were taken to the People's Hospital and the University Medical Affiliated Hospital."
After finishing his call, the deputy mayor stood with hands on his hips, his shirt soaked with sweat, staring blankly at the smoking ruins. Five people were still buried inside, their conditions unknown.
The Trauma First Aid Center welcomed its first patient just days after its inauguration—in such dramatic fashion.
Ding-dong!
Mission: Astonish Everyone—Perform Surgery on a Hero: Five-Part Limb Replantation!
Reward: 16,000 points + 1 random gift pack!
A five-part severed limb... Just thinking about it made one's scalp tingle. It was said that the injuries were caused by falling machinery, which happened to have several blades attached to it.
Yang Ping and Old Han dashed to the rooftop, where the dedicated elevator took them directly to the helipad. The rooftop was already crowded with people. Near the landing pad, Director Xiong stood with a team of doctors and nurses, a large box of emergency drugs and equipment beside them.
"Yes, yes, yes! Our helicopter is about to land. The rescue team is assembled, and all personnel are in position. Please rest assured—we'll do everything in our power to complete this mission!" Director Xia, drenched in sweat, spoke into the phone. His shirt clung to his back.
"Director Han, Director Xiong has briefed you on the basic situation. The helicopter will arrive shortly. As soon as you see the patient, come up with a plan immediately. Gather your best team and prepare for surgery—quickly, quickly!" Director Xia looked up at the sky.
The helicopter approached, its rotor noise growing louder. It hovered briefly above the rooftop before landing smoothly on the helipad. The gusts from its rotors blew everyone's hair sideways.
The patient was carried out on a stretcher and rushed toward the elevator. Emergency doctors and nurses followed closely, drawing blood samples from the IV catheter for cross-matching at the blood bank to facilitate immediate transfusions.
"Complete pre-op assessments—straight to surgery!" Director Xiong commanded.
"The city government's Secretary Luo is on his way. The rescue team—Secretary Luo is the team leader; I'm the deputy leader, and you're the chief expert. A command center has been set up in the surgical building's conference room. Secretary Luo requested a live broadcast of the entire rescue process from there. Mayor Li is attending a conference in the capital but is extremely concerned about this incident and is already rushing back," Director Xia succinctly explained.
"Song Zimo, Lu Xiao, and Zhang Lin are already in the operating room. Let's head down now and prepare for surgery," Old Han said, visibly excited.
