The Glitch in the World

Chapter 10: First Realities

Aiden woke before dawn, the first light of morning creeping through his window. Sleep had been elusive; his mind buzzed with everything that had happened. Meeting the Paradox Collective, trying to help Jake find his place in this new world—it was a lot to handle.

He dressed quickly and made his way to the dining hall, hoping the early hour would grant him some solitude. To his surprise, Master Lin was already there, sipping tea and reading a worn book.

"Couldn't sleep?" Master Lin asked without looking up.

Aiden grabbed a mug and poured himself some tea. "Yeah, too much on my mind."

Master Lin gestured to the seat across from him. "Join me."

Aiden sat down, wrapping his hands around the warm cup. "I've been thinking about what Ren said. About us disrupting the natural order."

Master Lin closed his book thoughtfully. "It's not uncommon to question our impact. In fact, it's necessary."

"But what if we're causing more harm than good?" Aiden pressed. "The Nulls, the glitches—are we making things worse?"

Master Lin met his gaze. "The code has always been in flux. Our role is to maintain balance, to repair and protect. Yes, our actions have consequences, but inaction can be just as harmful."

Aiden sighed. "I just want to do the right thing."

"That's all any of us can strive for," Master Lin said gently. "Doubt is a sign that you care deeply about the consequences of your actions. Use it to guide you, not paralyze you."

They sat in silence for a moment. Then Master Lin stood up. "Come, I think it's time for a different kind of lesson."

Curiosity piqued, Aiden followed him out of the hall. They walked through the quiet corridors until they reached a room he hadn't seen before. The door was inscribed with intricate symbols that seemed to glow faintly.

"This is the Archive Room," Master Lin explained. "It contains records of our world's coding history."

Inside, the room was lined with shelves crammed full of ancient scrolls, books, and floating holographic displays. The air was thick with the scent of old paper and ozone.

"Wow," Aiden breathed, taking it all in.

Master Lin led him to a central table where a large, ornate book lay open. "This is the Codex Primus—the original code from which all reality stems."

Aiden peered at the pages, which were filled with complex patterns and symbols he didn't recognize. "I can't read it."

"Not yet," Master Lin nodded. "But with time and study, you'll begin to understand. I wanted to show you this to give you perspective."

"Perspective?"

Master Lin rested a hand on the book. "Our actions are part of a much larger tapestry. The Nulls, the Paradox Collective—they each play a role. Understanding the past helps us navigate the present."

Aiden considered this. "Do you think the Nulls were always around?"

"Possibly," Master Lin mused. "Some believe they are remnants of outdated code or manifestations of imbalances."

"What about the Paradox Collective?"

"They've appeared throughout history under different names, always questioning the path of progress."

Aiden traced a finger over the book's intricate designs. "I feel like there's so much I don't know."

"Which is why you're here," Master Lin smiled. "Your formal training at the Code Guild begins today."

Aiden looked up, surprised. "Wait, Code Guild?"

"Yes," Master Lin confirmed. "Up until now, you've been learning the basics. The Guild offers deeper knowledge in various coding disciplines. It's time for you to expand your understanding."

A mix of excitement and nervousness rushed through Aiden. "What about Maya and Jake?"

"Maya will continue her studies there as well. As for Jake, we can find a suitable path for him, even if he can't manipulate code directly."

Aiden nodded. "Okay. I'm ready."

"Good. Meet me in the main hall in an hour. Bring your notebook."

Back in his room, Aiden quickly gathered his things. He shot a quick text to Jake.

> Aiden: Starting advanced training today. Meet up soon to fill you in.

Almost immediately, Jake replied.

> Jake: Good luck! Can't wait to hear about it.

Aiden smiled, feeling grateful for his friend's support.

He headed to the main hall, where a small group had assembled. Maya waved him over.

"Exciting, isn't it?" she beamed.

"Yeah," Aiden agreed. "Nervous, though."

"You'll do great," she assured him.

Master Lin stepped forward to address the group. "Welcome to the Code Guild's introductory session. Here, you'll delve deeper into the foundations of our reality's code, explore different coding schools, and begin to specialize in disciplines that resonate with you."

An older woman with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor joined him. "I'm Instructor Helena," she announced. "I'll be overseeing your theoretical studies."

Aiden exchanged a glance with Maya.

"For our first session," Helena continued, "we'll focus on the fundamental principles that govern code interaction. Follow me."

They were led into a spacious room filled with interactive displays. Streams of code floated in the air, forming shapes and patterns.

"Each of you, select a station," Helena instructed.

Aiden found a spot and activated the console. A holographic interface sprang to life, displaying a matrix of symbols and equations.

"Begin by analyzing the code fragment before you," Helena said. "Identify the variables and predict the output when parameters are altered."

Aiden studied the code, his mind clicking into gear. It was challenging but invigorating. Time seemed to blur as he worked through the problems, occasionally collaborating with Maya and other students.

After a while, Helena clapped her hands. "Good work. Let's review your findings."

As they discussed their analyses, Aiden realized how much more there was to learn. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, he felt energized.

The rest of the day was filled with lectures, practical exercises, and group discussions. They covered topics like code ethics, manipulation boundaries, and the philosophies of different coding schools.

By evening, Aiden was mentally exhausted but thoroughly satisfied.

"That was intense," he admitted to Maya as they walked back to their quarters.

"Tell me about it," she agreed. "But in a good way."

"Definitely."

They parted ways at the corridor junction. "Get some rest," Maya advised. "Tomorrow's another full day."

"You too," Aiden replied.

In his room, Aiden flopped onto his bed. His brain buzzed with new information, but he felt a sense of purpose. He pulled out Master Lin's notebook and jotted down some thoughts.

First day at the Code Guild. Challenging but incredible. I feel like I'm starting to see the bigger picture.

He paused, then added:

Need to find a way to help Jake be part of this. Maybe talk to Murphy about support roles.

His phone buzzed with a message from his mom.

> Mom: Haven't heard from you in a while. Everything okay?

Guilt prickled at him. In all the chaos, he'd neglected to stay in touch.

> Aiden: Sorry, Mom. Been busy with a new project. Let's talk soon.

He set the phone down, realizing that balancing everything was going to be harder than he thought.

A soft knock at his door interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in," he called.

Murphy peeked his head in. "Mind if I chat for a sec?"

"Sure," Aiden said, sitting up.

Murphy entered, closing the door behind him. "Heard you started at the Code Guild today."

"Yeah. It's been amazing."

"Glad to hear it." Murphy sat down in the chair across from him. "I also heard about your friend Jake."

Aiden tensed slightly. "What about him?"

"I think I might have a way for him to contribute," Murphy said. "We've got a tech division that handles the interface between conventional technology and the Etheric Field. Jake's got a knack for tech, right?"

Aiden's face lit up. "He does! He's always been into computers and engineering stuff."

"Well, maybe he can help there. He doesn't need to manipulate code directly to make a difference."

"That would be perfect," Aiden said gratefully. "Thanks, Murphy."

"Don't mention it," Murphy winked. "Always happy to help bridge the gaps."

As Murphy left, Aiden felt a surge of optimism. Maybe things were starting to fall into place.

He lay back down, letting his eyes drift shut. The challenges ahead were significant, but for the first time, he felt truly equipped to face them.

Tomorrow, he'd dive deeper into the code, learn more about the forces at play, and continue forging his path.

And he couldn't wait.
