Chapter 398: Chapter 397: March 7th’s Companion Quest Begins~~~ (Part 2)
Returning to his room, Pei Guang flopped onto his bed, fully prepared to do nothing.
But before he could even get comfortable, before his body had fully settled onto the mattress, he heard a knock at his door.
"Ah Guang~ Are you resting? It's me~"
Pei Guang: "Come in. You know me—I don't lock my door."
Just as Pei Guang finished speaking, March 7th hesitated for a moment before walking in with her phone in hand.
Originally, she had planned to get a good night's sleep. After all, this trip to Earth had been nothing short of amazing: they had gone out to cause trouble for the Voidrangers, strolled around shopping districts with Pei Guang and Stelle, and even had a chance to wander alone with Pei Guang. It was pure bliss!
Everything about this journey had been perfect. However, just as she returned and was about to get some rest, March 7th received a message from Fu Xuan, now that she had access to the network again.
Fu Xuan: "I remember that when we interrogated Kafka at the Divination Commission, both you and Pei Guang wanted to use the 'Matrix of Prescience Ultima' to search for your homeworld. At the time, because the information extracted from Pei Guang was too shocking, I completely forgot about your divination. Do you still want to proceed with it?"
"If you see this message and are interested, come find me. If not, just send me a reply."
Fu Xuan had been busy with various matters and had only just recalled this promise. She had agreed back then to divine the pasts of both Pei Guang and March 7th, but Pei Guang's reading had been so overwhelming that she had completely overlooked March 7th's turn.
Since she had made a promise, and things were relatively calm at the moment, she figured she should give March 7th a chance to follow up.
Yet, upon reading the message, March 7th felt a weight settle in her heart. She had always wanted to recover her lost memories, but after everything she had experienced on this journey, she also feared what she might uncover.
It wasn't the past itself that frightened her. What truly scared her was the possibility that her past self wouldn't recognize Pei Guang—wouldn't hold the same feelings for him.
Pei Guang watched March 7th's nervous, hesitant expression with curiosity. "What's wrong? You were so happy before we got back to the train. Did one of the clothes you bought turn out to be defective? Someone dared to sell my companion low-quality goods? Back when I played games, I had to just accept being scammed. But now? Now, I've got full freedom—I swear I'll teach those merchants a lesson!"
March 7th shook her head, gripping her phone tightly. "Fu Xuan wants to finish my divination… Do you think I should go? What if I really recover my memories, and my past self doesn't recognize you?"
Pei Guang pondered for a moment. "If you can recover them, then go ahead and do it. The day we boarded the Express, you told me you wanted to find out about your past. Even though I have a feeling that the divination matrix might cause some unexpected complications at a critical moment, what if it actually works? What if it gives you some useful clues?
"And even if regaining your memories leads to some kind of ridiculous, dramatic plot twist, I consider that part of my player experience. I managed to 'win you over' as you are now—why wouldn't I be able to do the same with your past self?"
March 7th: "I…"
Pei Guang: "Hey, forget everything else for a second. Just answer me this—do you want to find your memories? No outside influence. Just answer from your heart."
March 7th: "I do want to find them!"
Pei Guang: "Good! Then this mission is accepted. Until you give me a proper quest reward, I'll keep working on it."
March 7th: "Ah Guang…"
She wasn't sure what to say. But looking at the person in front of her, someone she felt like she had known forever, March 7th mustered her courage.
However, just as she did, a voice called out from outside Pei Guang's door.
"Ah Guang! Is March in there?" It was Stelle.
She pushed open the door, expecting to find them inside, but was met with an empty room. Frowning, she opened her minimap and checked the locations. March 7th had turned off her minimap visibility, but Pei Guang's marker was at the Divination Commission.
Stelle furrowed her brows. "Huh? Ah Guang is at the Divination Commission? Then where's March? Whatever, I'll just give her the wrong-sized clothes when she gets back. Hmph! That sneaky Ah Guang is definitely off doing something fun again. Since March isn't here… I won't feel guilty about this—Ah Guang, prepare yourself!"
Looking at Pei Guang's location on the mini-map, Stelle's face lit up with a mischievous grin.
At the same time, inside the Divination Commission, Fu Xuan stared silently at the sudden appearance of a man and a woman before her.
Watching as the two separated, she spoke with a rather displeased tone: "You two barged into the Divination Commission just to show me this?"
As the Master Diviner of the Commission, she had seen all kinds of things, and relationships between men and women were no exception. She had gone through her own youth and curiosity phase, and as such, before joining the Divination Commission, she had read some related materials out of interest.
Though she had remained single all her life, once she became a diviner, she lost interest in such things. But setting aside her disinterest, seeing people flaunt their affections—especially Pei Guang and March 7th—right in front of her made her feel inexplicably annoyed.
March 7th: "Huh? Sorry, Master Diviner. Ahem, we were left with no choice. Eh? Fu Xuan? Why is your face turning red? Don't tell me you—"
Fu Xuan: "I would never be curious about such things!"
That was a blatant lie. The moment Pei Guang and March 7th appeared, a fleeting thought crossed her mind—a momentary daydream where she imagined herself standing beside Pei Guang...
According to her foreseen fate, her career path was set in stone, but in terms of relationships... Fu Xuan could only remain silent.
But Pei Guang was different. He existed outside of destiny, meaning that with him, anything was possible. Taking a closer look at Pei Guang's appearance and his actions, she found both to be quite satisfactory. Though his behavior was a bit unorthodox, his core nature was kind and sincere. If it were Pei Guang... she wouldn't reject the idea.
"Wait, why am I even thinking about this?"
Fu Xuan's eyes widened as she caught herself. Just as she was about to say something, March 7th, who had initially wanted to tease her, suddenly adopted a serious expression—her instincts as a girl told her something was up.
Sensing March 7th's gaze, Fu Xuan cleared her throat: "Ahem. You came looking for me about the Matrix of Prescience Ultima, didn't you?"
March 7th: "How did you know?"
Fu Xuan: "This morning, I performed a divination regarding any unexpected events for today. The response I received was 'What do you think will happen today?' From past experiences, that usually means you're about to show up."
If this were before, Fu Xuan might have been puzzled by such a cryptic response, but ever since meeting Pei Guang, she understood all too well—it was an omen of Pei Guang coming to bother her.
As for why, she easily deduced it. If it wasn't about March 7th's past, then it would just be Pei Guang coming to chat or play around. But since only two of them had come, that meant it was something more private.
Given her recent message to March 7th, the answer was obvious.
March 7th scratched her head: "Hehe~ So, Fu Xuan, do I have a shot at regaining my memories today?"
Fu Xuan crossed her arms and looked at March 7th: "Your situation and Pei Guang's are a bit special. Pei Guang has his memories but no way to return, whereas you... have no memories at all, which makes things more difficult. Theoretically, using the Matrix of Prescience Ultima to recover your past should be possible, but I fear it might not work."
"Ah..." March 7th's tone carried a trace of disappointment, but strangely enough, she also felt a subtle sense of relief.
Pei Guang noticed her expression and patted her shoulder: "She said 'might not work,' not 'impossible.' People like her are just like me—if something isn't a guaranteed success, they'll say it's uncertain. That way, if something goes wrong, they can save face. Right, Fu?"
Fu Xuan: "No! That's not it! And what's with 'Fu'? Since when did you—!!"
Fu Xuan was about to retort, but before she could, Stelle suddenly stepped in between them. Thanks to her unexpected arrival, Fu Xuan managed to calm down before she got too worked up.
Stelle had just arrived, but she immediately noticed March 7th standing beside Pei Guang. Checking the mini-map, she then glanced at March 7th:
"March, why isn't your location showing on the mini-map?"
March 7th, who had been anticipating the chance to recover her memories, suddenly froze in place.
