Chapter 46: Battle of Callex
The Callex Region was located northeast of Olcour Capital. Here, lush forests were home to a diverse ecosystem. Massive mountain ranges protected it from storms that came from the south, and the absence of human activities preserved its natural richness.
Now, these peaceful lands had become a battlefield — arrows scattered everywhere, fire burned the tall trees and bodies of humans and demons alike littered the fertile soil, staining it with blood.
Mounted on an armored horse, Emperor Vedis gazed at the godforsaken field. His soldiers outnumbered the enemies three to one but they couldn't even move forward.
"Damn these demons..." he muttered under his breath and then exclaimed grimly:
"At this rate, Thevon will die!"
Herros Uthalonica stepped forward and stood beside the emperor's mount.
"Your Majesty, we have scouted both north and south, but they really aren't planning on letting us through. Sailing around the land would take too much time."
Vedis gritted his teeth.
"They are willing to sacrifice their entire army just to take out Thevon. It's a trade that benefits only them."
The sound of clashing blades and bones shattering filled the air. From night to sunrise, the battle was unceasing.
Currently, the imperial army was fighting to reach the deeper area of the forest where Thevon had been fighting alone.
They knew exactly where he was.
Looming clouds relentlessly struck lightning in one spot of the forest. They could also hear violent explosions and whirling winds. The frost magic Thevon used also affected them, sending cold breeze from fifty miles away.
Losing him would be a heavy blow to the empire's military strength.
But the demons blocked their path, preventing them from reaching and helping the scion of light. Their entire infantry was sent for the sole purpose of buying time until Thevon could be killed by the stronger, high-ranking demons.
"Where is the scion of divinity?" Herros asked.
Vedis scoffed.
"His intentions are unclear right now. I don't know if I can trust him."
Herros looked at the emperor.
"But we need his power now more than ever."
The silver-haired man responded with silence, his eyes gazing into the battlefield ahead. A few moments later, he and Herros Uthalonica had charged into the fray.
Rock Clan's scion, Augros, carved a new sense of fear in the heart of his enemies. Even the demons didn't know a human could be this brutal.
For more than twenty-four hours, this man had been moving non-stop. Anything that stood in his way got decimated either by a sword or a bone-crushing punch. Like an unstoppable force, Augros zoomed through the demons like a machine that only had one purpose: Destroy.
The demonic army consisted of low to middle ranked demons. These demons weren't known for their intelligence, but their raw strength equalled that of five human warriors. They wielded maces and axe that easily rendered an imperial soldier's metal armor useless.
In front of the Rock Clan's scion, they were dead meat. His techniques were too far beyond their understanding that they die before even attempting to react.
Augros stopped for a moment to catch his breath. He had created many openings for his troops to advance, but the enemies just kept coming.
"Lord Luxier... please hold on a bit longer..." he whispered to himself.
Then suddenly, they all felt a tremor in the ground. A rhythmic thudding that shook the trees.
Turning in that direction, they saw a scene that almost killed their hopes.
Giants, fifteen meters tall and a hundred tons of pure muscle and dense bones, came marching from behind the demonic forces. Though they moved slowly, their size alone made them impossible to outrun.
"RETREAT!!!" Herros screamed.
Vedis also commanded everyone to fall back. The army of towering demons approached.
The ones in the front got squashed under the giants' feet while the others that tried to run met the same fate.
Augros clicked his tongue and furrowed his eyebrows. When he was preparing to turn around and run, the ground shook once again from a different cause.
This time, it was coming from behind their forces.
"Sorry, we're late!" Jaizen Hemmethe exclaimed while walking towards Augros.
Behind him, an army of giant metal humanoids marched forth.
"What the..." Augros mumbled, looking up to the mechanical giants of their own.
Though, they looked a little peculiar.
Their bodies, made of bronze and iron, were shaped a lot like a woman with abnormally large breasts and buttocks. Their thighs were also disproportionately thick.
"Sweet, right?" Jaizen raised his brows as he stopped beside Augros. The mechanical giant women, also fifteen meters tall, marched and wrestled the demonic forces in a battle of size and might.
Augros blinked, his face full of shock and confusion.
"Lord Hemmethe... I'm grateful for your help, but why do they look like that?"
Jaizen glanced at his creations and then back at Augros.
"What do you mean? I think they look great."
Augros shook his head.
"Their shape looks very inefficient for battle is what I mean."
Jaizen crossed his arms.
"Huh? That's bullshit! They are perfect!"
The warrior pointed at the mechanical giants and then replied.
"Look, the weight from the front and the back could easily throw them out of balance."
"That's where their liquid mana fuel is stored," Jaizen responded.
"But you could have easily imitated a body more suited for battle like mine," Augros retorted.
"Why would you build something this compromisable?" he added.
Jaizen put a hand on Augros' shoulder and shook his head. He then spoke.
"Lord Uthalonica, my friend. There's only one equation that I never forget to consider when creating an invention."
Augros asked:
"And what is that?"
Jaizen grinned madly.
"Beauty + Usefulness = Perfection. I refuse to build something that lacks either of those aspects."
Augros sighed in disappointment and then watched the battle unfold.
***
Dhein was lost in the middle of the forest.
Avoiding the battle in the outer Callex, he tried to get to the inner parts of the forest as soon as he could. He wanted to gain information about the involvement of his clan to the manufacturing of the cursed food immediately.
"That said... where the hell am I?" he cried, looking around him. He was surrounded by nothing but trees and thick bushes.
By looking at the thundering sky and listening to the brief explosions, he could tell where Thevon was. Going there was the difficult part. He needed to avoid demons that blocked any way to the genius mage.
While trying to find his way, Dhein heard Cyreth's voice inside his head.
'Hey, human.'
Dhein raised an eyebrow.
"What is it?" he asked, surprised that Cyreth spoke to him on his own.
The god's next words sent shivers to Dhein's spine.
'Someone is following you.'
