B1 | Ch. 30 - Let Them Wonder
The camp bustled around Akiko, but the noise and movement felt distant as she leaned against the wall near the fabricator. The device at her neck still thrummed faintly, its presence a steady reminder of how much had changed in so little time. Her newly adapted suit fit like a second skin, her tail swaying freely behind her.
She sighed, gaze drifting toward scattered clusters of Iron Reclaimers. She caught glimpses of their curious glances in her direction. Eyes lingering on the ears perched atop her head or the tail that moved idly with her thoughts.
She'd had her tail out plenty of times before. But this was the first time she'd revealed her true form openly to people she barely knew and didn't fully trust.
Her fingers brushed the edge of the fabricator as she turned the thought over in her mind.
Why did I do that? she wondered. Why now, of all times?
Instinctively, her thoughts drifted to her trickster nature, the part of her that thrived on chaos and unpredictability. Stirring the pot, introducing complexity, keeping others guessing, it was as much a defense mechanism as it was strategy.
That's what this is, she told herself. A move to keep things messy, so they don't box me in.
She wanted to believe that. But another thought tugged at her.
Was it really just a trickster's gambit? Or was I just... tired?
Her tail flicked sharply at the thought. Her ears twitched.
She hated the idea that exhaustion had driven her to this. That she'd let the weight of everything, Evelyn's capture, the entity's constant presence, the Sovereign's scrutiny, push her to reveal something she should've kept hidden.
But even as she tried to dismiss the thought, she knew there was truth in it.
Raya's awestruck expression came to mind. The way her voice had softened when she called Akiko's transformation incredible.
It reminded her of Anna. The junior technician had been the first to accept Akiko's kitsune form without hesitation or fear. Anna had treated her like a person first, not a curiosity or a threat, and that simple kindness had meant more to Akiko than she'd ever admitted.
But this moment with Raya felt different.
Anna had been a quiet ally, supportive in the shadowed corners of the Sovereign's hierarchy.
Raya's reaction had been public. Open.
It felt like a declaration. A subtle defiance of the unspoken rules that always seemed to govern Akiko's place in this universe.
Akiko let out a soft laugh, though it lacked her usual edge.
"Maybe that's it," she muttered. "Maybe I just wanted someone to see me again. The real me."
Her AI companion gave a faint, questioning pulse at the base of her neck. A curious, non-intrusive nudge.
The strange bond she now shared with the AI felt oddly grounding. Anchoring, in a way she hadn't expected.
"Well, friend," she murmured, brushing her fingers over the device, "guess I'll find out soon enough if that was a good idea or not."
Her gaze swept the camp again. A few Reclaimers were clearly whispering about her.
The trickster in her stirred.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Her lips curled into a faint smirk.
Let them talk. Let them wonder. The more questions they ask about me, the less time they'll spend trying to control me.
Still, a thread of nervousness curled beneath the bravado.
She glanced toward Raya, who was organizing supplies nearby. Movements quick, practiced. Lighter than before. The heaviness in her shoulders had lessened, if only a little.
Akiko's smirk softened into something more thoughtful.
If nothing else, it gave her something else to think about. That, at least, felt worth it.
"Okay," she murmured to herself, straightening against the wall. "No more second-guessing. It's done. Let's see how they handle it."
Akiko approached the center of the camp, where Cassandra and Hayes stood deep in discussion. Cassandra's arms were crossed, her posture calm but unyielding. Hayes, by contrast, looked like a pressure valve moments from rupture.
He spotted her first, gaze narrowing. "Ah, here comes our resident enigma," he said flatly. "What chaos have you stirred this time?"
Akiko raised an eyebrow, letting her tail flick behind her.
"Chaos? Me?" she said with mock innocence. "I thought you were supposed to manage the chaos, Hayes. Isn't that in your job description?"
"Don't test me," he snapped. "You've already revealed enough to put this entire mission at risk. The Reclaimers aren't stupid. Sooner or later, they're going to start asking whether you're a threat."
Her smirk faded slightly. She turned to Cassandra, hoping for something more measured.
Cassandra's gaze was steady, unreadable for a moment. Then she sighed. "Hayes has a point," she said evenly. "You've made things... complicated. Again."
"Complicated doesn't mean bad," Akiko said, arms crossing. "Sometimes complication keeps people honest. On their toes."
"Or puts a target on your back," Hayes muttered. "You're not exactly blending in anymore."
Akiko opened her mouth to reply, but Cassandra raised a hand. "Enough."
The word wasn't harsh, just final.
She studied Akiko for a moment. Then: "I get it. You're navigating this your way. But you need to understand, the Reclaimers are opportunists, and the entity we're facing doesn't play by rules. Every choice we make here has consequences."
Akiko looked down briefly, then met her eyes again.
"I know," she said quietly. "But I can't keep pretending to be something I'm not. Not here. Not now."
Cassandra's expression softened slightly. "Fair enough. But every move you make reflects on the rest of us. We're all in this together."
Hayes didn't argue, but the scowl on his face lingered.
"I'll keep that in mind," Akiko said.
"See that you do," Cassandra replied. The tone made it clear: dismissed.
Akiko turned, retreating into the bustle of the camp, Raya trailing like a quiet shadow.
As they walked, her thoughts flicked back to the fight. The jagged shard in her hand, the way the entity's creation had adapted to her every move. She wouldn't let herself be that vulnerable again.
"Hey, Raya," she said softly.
Raya looked up, wary but listening.
"I need something better. That thing we fought, it nearly tore me apart. I need more than fists and scrap."
"You're asking for a weapon," Raya said, tone low.
"A knife," Akiko clarified. "Something solid. Nothing flashy. Just... something to hold onto."
Raya hesitated. Her eyes darted toward Cassandra and Hayes.
"They won't like it," she whispered.
"They won't know," Akiko replied, smiling faintly. "I'll keep it hidden. You saw what happened. This isn't about rebellion, it's survival."
Raya chewed her lip. Then, with a quiet sigh, she reached into her pack and passed over a compact utility blade. "Don't make me regret this."
"You won't," Akiko said, slipping it into a concealed pocket. "Thanks."
As they continued, Akiko paid closer attention to her steps.
The magboots on her feet engaged and disengaged without conscious thought. Where the Sovereign's suits had always felt rigid, tools she had to command, this suit felt responsive. Intuitive. The boots released before she even realized she was shifting balance, then locked again with a whisper-soft click as she touched down.
She lifted one foot and pushed off gently.
The boots let go. Her body floated. She added a flicker of foxfire and glided forward. Effortless.
She landed with barely a sound.
I could be a real menace with this, she thought, a grin creeping in. Close-quarters, confined hallways. This was her domain now.
She glanced sideways.
Raya moved more cautiously, her suit functional but stiff.
"Do you ever feel like the suit holds you back?" Akiko asked, voice casual.
Raya blinked. "I've always thought of it as necessary. Clunky, but useful."
Akiko smiled. "Imagine if it worked with you instead of against you."
She spun lightly, magboots disengaging and re-engaging mid-step.
Raya stared. "How are you—?"
Akiko tapped the base of her neck. "Magic and tech," she said with a wink. "My new friend is full of surprises."
Raya's expression was caught somewhere between awe and concern. "That's... amazing. But also kind of scary."
"Scary?"
"You're rewriting the rules," Raya said. "What else can you do with that thing?"
Akiko's smile faded just a touch.
Her gaze drifted ahead. Something inside her felt calm. Too calm.
"Guess we'll find out," she said.
She wasn't sure yet where the limits were. But she intended to find them. On her terms.
With a few new tricks up her sleeve.
