Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Dinner
It was a special night. Derek Rogan was about to be officially introduced to Kylie Jenner's family as her boyfriend. Although he had already met some of the sisters at events and at the gym, this would be the first time he would be with everyone together in a more intimate and familiar setting. The dinner was scheduled at Kris Jenner's house, and Kylie was visibly excited, but also nervous.
"It'll be easy, you already know most of them," Kylie said with an encouraging smile, as she adjusted the collar of Derek's shirt. They were in the car, on their way to Kris's mansion.
Derek smiled back, but there was a hidden anxiety in his eyes. "Yeah, I know... But it's never easy to impress the family, especially a family like yours."
Kylie laughed. "Relax, Derek. They already love you. And besides, you have incredible stories that can impress anyone."
When they arrived, Kendall was the first to greet them. She was casual, with a warm smile.
"Hey, you're here! Derek, I've been waiting for you. Come on, everyone's in the living room."
Derek exchanged a hug with Kendall, who he had become quite friendly with. They were led into the heart of the house, where the entire family was gathered. Kim and Kourtney, who Derek had briefly met from the previous party, were sitting together, chatting, while Khloe was next to Kris, laughing about something.
"Look who's here," Kim said, smiling at the couple as she stood up to greet them. "Kylie finally brought her boyfriend home officially."
Kourtney waved at Derek and greeted him in her calm, observant way.
"Welcome back."
Khloe, on the other hand, was more energetic.
"So, this is the mystery man we've been hearing so much about. I finally get to meet my sister's boyfriend."
Derek shook her hand with a smile.
"Nice to meet you, Khloe."
Khloe looked at Kylie and then at Derek, a playful glint in her eyes.
"If you and Kylie don't work out, I'm here, huh."
The room erupted in laughter.
Kylie laughed, shaking her head. "You don't miss a beat, do you, Khloe?"
Derek, without missing a beat, replied with a smile, "I'll keep that in mind, but I'm really happy with Kylie."
The evening continued in a light and relaxed mood. Derek felt more comfortable with each passing moment, especially since he and Kendall already had an established friendship, and the other sisters seemed genuinely open and curious about him. Kylie kept him close, her hand holding his in a gesture of comfort and support.
During dinner, conversation flowed easily, until Kris, always attentive and curious, decided to ask a question that everyone seemed to be thinking about.
"Derek, we've heard a little bit about your career, but I'm really curious... What was your journey in the Marines like?"
The eyes of the entire table turned to Derek as he finished chewing the bite of food on his plate. He wiped his mouth with his napkin and, with a slightly more serious look, began to speak.
"Well, I enlisted in 2012 and, after a while, I joined MARSOC, which is the Marine Corps' special operations unit. I was trained to be a high-risk operator and eventually I was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant."
Kris leaned forward slightly, clearly interested. "MARSOC? That sounds impressive."
Derek nodded. "Yes, it was a challenging job, but one that I loved. I also picked up a few languages along the way Russian, Pashto, and Spanish. Those skills came in handy for the missions we went on in different parts of the world."
Kourtney, who was usually more reserved, seemed genuinely surprised. "You speak Russian? That's... unexpected."
Derek smiled. "Yes, Russia is one of the US's major geopolitical adversaries, so knowing the language was useful for certain operations."
Kim was taking in every word, her eyes wide with surprise.
"And you did all this for the Marines?"
Derek paused before continuing.
"Not just the Marines. There were times when I was loaned out to the CIA and the NSA. Some of the missions I did were clandestine operations, so they involved a lot of stealth and working with other intelligence agencies."
Khloe, who was leaning back in her chair, widened her eyes.
"Wait... So you were like a spy?"
Derek laughed softly, shaking his head.
"Not exactly a spy, but yes, some of the missions involved intelligence and infiltration. We had to be able to blend into different cultures and situations without attracting attention."
The table was silent for a few seconds, everyone clearly impressed. Even Kylie, who already knew much of this, seemed to rediscover how much Derek had lived.
Kris was the first to break the silence. "This is absolutely fascinating. It's not every day met anyone who had a career like that."
Kim nodded. "Definitely not."
Kendall, always close to Derek, smiled and said, "I told you he was amazing, right?"
Derek laughed and looked at Kylie, who smiled back fondly. "I just did my job," he said humbly. "I've always believed in serving my country to the best of my ability. But I'm in a different place in my life now."
Kylie squeezed Derek's hand under the table, silently showing her support. She knew how much he had sacrificed and how much those experiences had shaped him. And now, he was here, ready to embrace this new phase with her.
As dinner continued, conversations drifted to other topics, but there was a new admiration in the air. Derek had not only won Kylie's heart, but also the respect of her family. The Kardashian-Jenner sisters, with their vibrant personalities and lifestyles, seemed genuinely impressed by Derek's depth and stories.
At the end of the night, as the couple was about to leave, Khloe joked once more. "Remember, Derek, if you and Kylie don't work out, let me know!"
Derek laughed and hugged Khloe, but he answered with conviction. "I guess you'll just have to settle for being my sister-in-law, Khloe."
Kylie laughed out loud, clearly pleased with the answer. She looked at Derek with a look of approval and affection. As they left the house, Derek felt that although this was a new phase in his life, he was ready for it, surrounded by a new family who, surprisingly, already accepted him with open arms.
