Chapter 3: The Cold Mountain
Several thousand years ago, ten gods from the highest point of the sky, Acalytha, and ten gods the deepest pits of darkness, Tartarheim, waged war on Earth. Humans were forced to be positioned at the center of their conflict as the war wiped out more than half of the population.
Soldiers from both armies started to dwindle, losing its numbers as the battle lasted for over a thousand years. Until a beacon of hope arrived in the form of Kaelith, a major god of Acalytha. He rose to reach the greatest peak of ascension, with his power rivaling more than a dozen major gods of Tartarheim.
This crowned him the title of God of Gods, causing a stir in the forces of Tartarheim. For he was a force that they could not let stand.
Threatened by his position, the gods of Tartarheim created Curses— powers dark and twisted that corrupt human minds, forcing them to evolve into monstrous creatures that transcends their human reach. Although it was powerful, the Cursed will lose their humanity and will only roam the world as a manic predator, driven to kill and destroy.
The gods of Acalytha were forced to retaliate, giving Blessings to other humans to combat the Cursed. The war completely changed and the gods used humans as pawns in order to satiate their own desires.
Several hundred years later, the war of gods stopped in an instant. The dark skies that loomed over the world, the frequent earthquakes caused by the gods' clashing weapons, and the blood that stained the earth. It was as if the war did not happen. Only the ruins of the once great kingdoms were the evidence of the calamity that struck upon them. And the people, both Cursed and Blessed, had vanished.
This was followed by an agreement between the two realms, agreeing to share Earth and avoid conflict in between their worlds. The gods were happy, and the world was peaceful once more. But the disappearance of Kaelith intrigued many.
Some speculations speak of Kaelith's death as he wielded his sword to triumphantly defeat the leader of Tartarheim's forces. Some said that he betrayed Acalytha and made a deal with Tartarheim to cease all wars in exchange for his life. And some spoke of his presence on Earth after ambushed by an army of gods. But these were all wrong.
For he has never knocked on death's door.
'YOU ARE FREEZING!'
A rough breeze of icy-cold air brushed upon Kaelith's face. The chilling mountain winds sent shivers down his spine, causing him to jolt up. His eyes wide in shock.
"So cold."
The man wrapped his hands around his body, only for him to realize that he was fully naked. His skin had already turned pale, but a notification appeared before his eyes.
'Gods do not feel cold.'
'Body temperature is dropping.'
Kaelith stared at the notifications that repeated several times.
"What are these things?"
He stared at the screen for a few more seconds before another cold swirl draped on his body. He trembled from head to toe, his body getting colder by the second.
"Just my luck. It stormed." Kaelith sighed, looking around in search for clothing. His eyes landed on Steven's bag that the latter failed to bring with him.
He forced his feet to walk forward, his arms crossed in front of his face to block the cold winds that blew towards him. The walk was short, but it felt like he was still far from the round leather bag.
"Almost there! Feet, don't you dare fail me right now." Kaelith yelled, pushing forward until he arrived right in front of the bag.
The man stood there, realization hitting him on the face. "Wait, feet?"
His glance fell down, right on the ground as he stared at the pair of feet attached to his body. A mix of surprise and fear flashed in his eyes. The notifications, his injuries, and now his entire body. Everything wasn't as he remembered.
"What the hell happened to me while I was asleep?"
Shoving the thoughts away before he freezes to death, Kaelith dug into Steven's back in search for pieces of clothing. He remembered that Steven wore a fur coat once in another quest. The man was proud that he bought an expensive piece of clothing after completing his tenth mission.
Remembering this left a bitter taste on Kaelith's tounge. He was already on his fortieth mission, yet he was still unable to even buy decent clothes. He could only get his hands on thrifted cloaks that were run by a charity.
Moments later, Kaelith's face glowed in excitement. Seeing the dark brown fur inside the bag sparked a new hope for him. He could finally at least cope with the cold somehow. It wasn't a permanent idea, but at least now he wasn't freezing.
"Still so cold."
Kaelith cupped his hands and blew hot air inside it, just so he could feel warmth from something. He didn't realize until now that his body has already gone pale and the snow has already froze the hair all over his body.
It was hard to think when his entire body was about to freeze. His mind was already getting foggy from the cold and now his entire body was trembling. The coat could only help so much.
"The bear's lair..."
The thought sprung inside his mind. Using all his strength, Kaelith walked away from their camp and into the direction that Donna pointed before. According to her, there was a tree nearby the guardian bear's lair. If she was telling the truth, then Kaelith could find himself some warmth.
Hiking up the mountain, Kaelith arrived at the giant tree. Its twisted body curved heavily towards the right and its branches grew a vast foliage, its dark red leaves blowing from the strong winds of the mountain.
The man sought shelter inside the large hole of its body. He was still cold, but the winds could not reach him inside, so he at least get to be warm just until the snow pass by.
'The gods do not feel cold.'
'Body temperature is dropping.
Kaelith stared at his screen once more. He never once heard or seen of anything like it before. It was a pale blue screen that follows his vision in a fixed position. The screen looked similar to a device, but Kaelith wondered how this was used.
With his hand reaching up, he gently pressed it, surprised when a white dot hovered over the screen where his finger was pressing. The man scrolled through the notifications and found that he already received the same notice more than ten times.
Based on the timestamp from the first notification and the latest one that he received, the blizzard started only two days before. This meant that he was already been asleep for two whole days.
As he scrolled through the notice, his eyes laid on the first few ones that was left unread. He gulped as he read the first notification that he received.
'Your godhood has been retrieved.'
'Do you want to notify the other gods?'
Kaelith stared at the two options. He already remembered some of what happened to him before. He had a vague idea what his reappearance meant and it wouldn't be good for him.
Lifting his finger, Kaelith tapped No.
