Chapter 39
When leading Li Yan into the villa's living room, he saw two people standing and whispering inside, and as soon as they entered, their gaze was cast over.
With just one glance, Li Yan could tell these two people were not ordinary. Among them, one tall man, although dressed in a regular suit, appeared just as an ordinary attendant to most. But based on his subtle movements, Li Yan could discern him as someone capable of launching an attack at any moment—a bodyguard! And much stronger than those he'd seen last time!
The other man had his hair meticulously combed, wore gold-rimmed glasses, and held a briefcase in his hand. His detached gaze behind the glasses revealed that although he may not physically excel, he was accustomed to dealing with prominent figures.
"Brother Zhou, Brother Ji." Yu Xiaodi, at home, showed none of her rebellious side and appeared like an obedient daughter, with polite demeanor.
"Xiaodi, is this your boyfriend? Aren't you going to introduce us?" Brother Zhou nodded in acknowledgment, focusing his gaze on Li Yan, while Brother Ji teased with a smile.
"No, you all chat, we'll go up first."
Yu Xiaodi led Li Yan upstairs and quietly introduced, "The one who appears naive and honest is called Zhou Yunfei; he's actually very capable, hired with great effort by my mom as head of security. Those you've seen are just his subordinates. The talking one is Ji Yi, my dad's secretary."
"Your mom's..." Li Yan casually remarked.
Yu Xiaodi's face turned stern, "Did my mom offend you?!"
"Could you not interrupt me, please? Listen carefully, I'm saying: your mom's style must be very assertive. Notice, not an interruption from you, with no pauses." Li Yan replied irately, casually commented, misunderstood by her as cursing.
Yu Xiaodi smiled awkwardly, slightly surprised, "How do you know?"
"First, you mentioned this capable head of security was hired by your mom, not your dad; second, your dad's secretary is a man."
Yu Xiaodi rolled her eyes at him, chuckling quietly, then hurriedly warned, "When meeting my dad later, don't say anything rash; he tends to be quite stern."
"What's his sternness got to do with me! I'm not his son-in-law." Li Yan dismissed, observing the decor style here, as such details often reflect the landlord's character.
At a room's door, Yu Xiaodi casually said, "Here we are," then knocked.
Soon, a deep male voice echoed from within, "Come in!"
Upon entering, it was a study integrated with an office, where a middle-aged man in a white shirt sat behind a desk reviewing documents, a steel pen in his right hand.
A mansion is for enjoyment, yet the current situation is often that buyers of mansions remain laborious at home, with even less time at home, experiencing less leisure than maids or workers. Looking at Yu Xiaodi's father, Li Yan was reminded of his workaholic wife, Zhang Yurong, feeling somewhat ironic.
"Dad…" As he didn't raise his head, Yu Xiaodi obediently stood, softly speaking, "He's Li Yan, who saved me."
The middle-aged man raised his head, revealing a kindly smile, warmly saying, "Oh, you're here. Don't be formal, have a seat! Xiaodi, pour some water for Xiao Li."
Li Yan sat in a chair across from him, observing from the moment he came in. Now, both were studying one another.
Yu Xiaodi walked to the cooler for a cup of water, placing it on the table. Seeing their eye contact, she felt pressured, already somewhat fearful of her father.
"Haha, don't mind me calling you Xiao Li, right? I'm Yu Hong. A big thank you for saving Xiaodi!"
Li Yan didn't respond to his words, directly asking, "Mr. Yu, your gratitude is just forcing me to meet you? Like your bodyguard in demeanor, they simply imitate you."
Such words bore evident sarcasm; Yu Xiaodi secretly smiled bitterly.
Yu Hong's smile slightly stiffened, but his embarrassment quickly faded as he continued smiling, "You make a good point, this fault is mine; I should've visited to thank you. By the way, you... don't recognize me, do you?"
"Why should I know you?" Li Yan countered, then said, "You might be famous, but I'm just an ordinary person who doesn't know celebrities."
Yu Hong felt slightly awkward again, glancing at his daughter. This identity should have been referred to by you. If I state it now, it makes me seem ostentatious.
Based on Li Yan's reactions twice prior, Yu Xiaodi assumed he'd guessed their family's situation too, thus avoiding a detailed introduction. Yet, now she felt Li Yan deliberately said so out of displeasure. Seeing her father's appearance, she reluctantly explained, "Li Yan, my dad has little time, visiting to thank you would provoke much attention, so..."
"Before, observing her with bodyguards and someone attempting to harm her, pardon my disrespect! I'm merely an ordinary person; my previous words lacked intentional contempt. Please don't mind; it's you being low-key, my ignorance."
Listening to Li Yan's explanation, beyond embarrassment, Yu Hong felt slightly frustrated. It's been ages since anyone spoke to him like this. The previous confrontation felt novel, not displeasing, but now, these words... surprising that he perceives me as... And coupling it with his prior speaking style, these seemingly earnest words resemble mockery more.
"Xiaodi, step out; let me chat with Xiao Li." Yu Hong casually instructed, but habitually ordered, rather than consulting, which Yu Xiaodi acknowledged, glanced at Li Yan, and retreated.
"Mr. Yu, care for a smoke?" Li Yan took out a cigarette, picked one for himself, then casually asked.
Yu Hong was momentarily stunned but then accepted, "Alright, I'll take one, though I seldom smoke."
This casual response revealed to Li Yan his smooth demeanor.
I rarely smoke, yet specially accommodate you today!
Both lit up a cigarette, took a drag, having been silent for a while.
"Xiao Li, I know, surely you're aware of me; just have some misunderstanding." Concerned, Yu Hong expressed.
Li Yan pondered, alright, I admit a bit of irritation, hence the initial sarcasm toward you. But what I said later was all truthful; I genuinely don't know you!
He opted not to explain, merely silently smoking, preventing Yu Hong from speculating further.
