Chapter 37
(Happy weekend. The extras are starting to appear. If any buddies want to cameo as extras, please leave a message in the pinned post in the book review section, and Old Lai will add you when the time is right.)
To corroborate her words, Li Yan lifted a stack of proposals in his hand without saying much.
It was after working hours. Even if they were here for a dinner date, as a superior, he had no right to say more. Seeing that Zhang Yurong didn't express anything, Ye Jiahong also nodded, "You guys... continue! We're going to meet a client."
They immediately headed towards the corridor, with Ke Yunyun going ahead to ask a waiter about their reserved room.
"It's all your fault!" Wen Qianyi, who pressed the elevator again, glared at Li Yan.
Li Yan glared back, "My fault for what? It was you who said the ambiguous things; it was you who spoke to cover up. You see, I didn't say anything, that's called silence is golden."
Wen Qianyi felt embarrassed for just a moment, but then she didn't care. Whether there was an affair between them, she knew it herself. Work performance was what she valued; the rest was just something to laugh off.
Seeing her quickly regain composure without being confused, Li Yan couldn't help but secretly admire her. As a stunning beauty, she must be subject to gazes and gossip behind her back. Yet, someone mature in mind can see through the essence and not overly entangle themselves. Like Zhang Yurong, who was cold and intimidating, though she might not have rumors, she was likely exhausting for both herself and others.
This time Zhang Yurong really brought a few subordinates along. Li Yan didn't worry about her and directly left the clubhouse with Wen Qianyi.
Although there was a buffet and drinks prepared at the party, most guests were from the film industry. Even if they weren't stars, they held themselves with a certain status. The investors also didn't want to lose face in front of them, so everyone behaved elegantly and didn't eat much. The main focus was on networking and introductions. Li Yan didn't care much about such decorum, but unfortunately, after being introduced by Dai Junnie, he and Wen Qianyi hardly had any free time. As soon as someone left, others came over immediately, leaving no time to eat.
After leaving, they found another popular restaurant to eat at, and then parted ways. Wen Qianyi let Li Yan take half the materials home to study by himself first.
Seeing it was getting late, and assuming Zhang Yurong had already returned, Li Yan headed straight home.
...
Passing the section of road where they previously collided with Yu Xiaodi and his gang, he stopped the car, ran uncivilized to the roadside, and relieved himself.
After finishing and getting back in the car, he didn't continue home but turned around and left at a nonchalant pace. This time, instead of returning to the city, he got on the national highway and drove further into the outskirts.
He drove until he reached a place called Qingsong Town. Beyond this town was another city's jurisdiction. The area was well-developed but couldn't compare to the city. Only the town center remained lively this late. The place where Li Yan parked was right before entering the town center. On one side of the highway was undeveloped wasteland, with the industrial area farther ahead.
Li Yan got out of the car, lit a cigarette, and looked at a section of the highway.
After a while, a minivan that had been tailing him followed and parked nearby. Four men got out of the vehicle, approached Li Yan, and surrounded him on the roadside.
"How far are you planning on following me?" Li Yan, with a cigarette in his mouth, surveyed the four men squinting.
"Since you already know who we are and know you can't escape, come with us! Someone wants to see you."
Li Yan took a deep drag on his cigarette, eyeing the speaker — a cold-faced man with a rather heroic appearance.
"No rush, let me finish this cigarette first."
"Wow! So humane, huh." Li Yan clapped twice and gave a thumbs up, continuing, "What's your name?"
The cold-faced man's lips twitched with disdain, "Lin Huixiang."
"And you guys?"
Seeing Li Yan's nonchalant demeanor, two of them weren't pleased and cursed, "What the fuck! Why do you need our names?"
Another one directly taunted, "Grandpa Cui Kai here! Call me Brother Kai!"
"Damn you, I call myself Daddy, you call yourself Grandpa, grabbing the upper hand?" A playful scolding ensued.
"Punk! If I'm Brother Kai, won't I lose out? Better call me Grandfather Kai!" Cui Kai laughed.
Lin Huixiang was clearly the leader among them. Despite thinking the task was foolproof, he maintained his cool demeanor, feeling that something was amiss.
Li Yan exhaled some smoke, seemingly at ease rather than threatened, as he mused, "There's a gap! Listening to you guys talk is like watching 'Triad.' But this guy here, he has a bit of Johnny To's style. You've got potential!"
"I know 'Triad.' Who's Johnny To? Nicholas Tse? Damn! Do you even have any culture? Haven't you watched TV?" Cui Kai scoffed, wishing he could just slash this uncultured guy.
"Flatterer! Brother Xiang is a tough guy, no way Nicholas Tse has this aura!" The other two also mocked Li Yan.
"Let's go!" Lin Huixiang said coldly.
"Alright, I'll cooperate. Don't hit me," Li Yan quickly tossed away his cigarette and followed them willingly.
The four men weren't surprised; if they couldn't even intimidate one unarmed man, they'd be too embarrassed to show their faces.
At the minivan, two men went in first. Cui Kai tossed the knife onto the passenger seat and got into the front to drive. Lin Huixiang stayed behind, only getting in after seeing Li Yan inside.
When Lin Huixiang closed the door, Cui Kai started the vehicle while cursing. Li Yan, sandwiched between people in front and back, suddenly asked, "I noticed you tailing me. Why not run to the city, the police station, or crowded places, but come all the way here to stop?"
"Why? You little shit!" Cui Kai responded.
"Because there are no cameras along this stretch." Li Yan opened his mouth to smile, showing an eerily white set of teeth in the dim car.
Because there were no cameras along this route? They were momentarily confused, wondering if he might care about being seen?
Lin Huixiang sensed something was wrong, but as he realized it, Li Yan had already struck, knocking out the two men beside and in front of him! His forehead then collided with Lin's face, causing dizziness, followed by another punch that knocked him out too.
As Cui Kai was about to continue driving to turn around, noticing the ruckus in the back, he immediately glanced behind. Seeing Li Yan counterattack, he hurriedly reached for the watermelon knife.
Before he could get out of the car, Li Yan quickly dealt with the three at the back. Cui Kai felt Li Yan's gaze piercing him in the dimness, touching the depths of his soul and making his heart tremble.
"Just drive away!" Li Yan straightforwardly got out of the car.
"Okay..." Cui Kai didn't know why he agreed, as he hadn't intended to. His mind was filled with thoughts, scanning the vicinity, and then he started the car, having tossed the watermelon knife aside long ago.
After getting out, Li Yan returned to the roadside, retrieved the discarded cigarette butt, and blew off the ashes on the ground. Then he got into his car and continued driving.
If you have something to address with me directly, you shouldn't have tracked me home... Li Yan fell silent for a while, then slowly drove away.
