Chapter 291: First Update
Zheng Yixuan really didn't have time; he was squeezing in a meeting with Li Yan, which was something minor that didn't actually require his expertise. He merely arranged a lunch with Li Yan and had his assistant set up a meeting with an experienced lawyer for this type of matter.
Following the assistant to a conference room and waiting for a while, a young female lawyer entered.
"Hello, my name is Yun Dandan, and I'll be providing services for you." The female lawyer didn't engage in much small talk, aware that this was arranged by a big boss, so she cut straight to the chase.
"Hello, I'm Li Yan. I have several contracts for which I'd like you to assist in reviewing and perfecting." Li Yan set up the documents and his computer.
As he looked at the female lawyer, she seemed familiar as if he had seen her somewhere before, but he couldn't recall much.
The female lawyer got to work right away but was soon a bit surprised. She looked up at Li Yan and asked, "Paradise Group? Your company has its own legal department and team of lawyers, so why..."
Li Yan felt a bit embarrassed: "This is unrelated to the company; it's just personal assistance I'm seeking. Initially, I asked Old Zheng for help, but he said you were more adept at this, so that's why I'm requesting Miss Yun's help."
She nodded when she heard him refer to Zheng Yixuan as Old Zheng, realizing their relationship. "Such minor issues don't require troubling Lawyer Zheng; we can handle it. I've dealt with Paradise Group quite a few times since a few legal matters from their clients are outsourced to our firm..."
Hearing this, Li Yan recognized her. During a contract negotiation he once attended with Wen Qianyi, Yun Dandan had been the legal representative for the other party. He remembered her contributions were crucial, and she spoke with a strong presence, particularly during the joint deal with Li Yunpiao and Wu Songtao. (See Chapter 130 for details)
"I see, will it be inconvenient?" Though he recognized her, he realized that time, Wen Qianyi was the main figure, and Yun Dandan didn't recognize him. He certainly didn't mention it either.
"No, it's not inconvenient. They merely outsource some legal matters to us, as they do not have a permanent legal team themselves, and it doesn't pose a conflict of interest."
After clarifying, Yun Dandan began examining the background information. She specialized in commercial contract issues, well-acquainted with critical points, potential pitfalls, legal blind spots, and ambiguities, with ample experience in handling them.
For a regular client, she'd just handle her duties to complete the task. But today's client was evidently not ordinary; it was a task assigned by lawyer Zheng Yixuan himself. For a young lawyer like Yun Dandan, working at Zheng Yixuan's law firm was driven by admiration for his reputation. To her, Zheng Yixuan was not just the head and leading attorney at the firm but also her idol.
Thus she held a unique understanding that this was a personal favor, not a commercial interest client. So she was generous, as she reviewed and organized the material, she occasionally offered advice to Li Yan, mentioning the reasons behind her reviews and improvements of the contracts. Otherwise, Li Yan would merely know the facts without understanding the underlying reasons.
Li Yan had intended to take it easy, but seeing how earnest she was made him feel a bit awkward, especially since it was gracious of Old Zheng to lend a hand this time; he hesitated to trouble him with such small matters again. Therefore, he sat beside her and listened attentively.
Within the company, Wen Qianyi always settled the general direction of the contract, with the detailed drafting handed over to the legal department for refinement, before negotiations and signing with the client. In this regard, Yun Dandan was a professional. The various aspects she discussed were quite challenging for Li Yan, whose knowledge of business law wasn't even on par with Wen Qianyi.
...
These matters were not terribly difficult. Wen Qianyi merely intended to challenge him a bit temporarily, not embarrass him. If it were extremely difficult, she wouldn't have suggested Ye Jiahong that he follow up.
Thanks to Yun Dandan's swift and effective methods, they had everything sorted out by noon. Li Yan found it quite overwhelming to keep up, yet after completing a few contracts in succession, he gained a general understanding of the situation. While not immediately becoming a legal expert, he could at least manage during client meetings and negotiations today.
Zheng Yixuan was considerate; he always had a very tight schedule. However, he managed to complete his morning commitments ahead of time and canceled a lunch meeting to dine with Li Yan instead.
Having been especially helpful, Yun Dandan was also invited by Zheng Yixuan to join them for lunch. However, she politely declined, recognizing that he seldom got private meals with old friends, hence not wanting to intrude, excusing herself with other matters she claimed needed her attention.
Zheng Yixuan booked the restaurant located near the law firm's building, which stood in the busiest section of the city, where space was costly and restaurants weren't abundant. Yet most people working in this area valued their time, preferring ordered meals rather than spending time and money dining slowly at a restaurant, even during lunch breaks. When hosting clients, most wouldn't mind driving farther for a better place. Thus, upon their arrival, the restaurant wasn't overly busy, primarily serving out-of-town visitors.
