Chapter 20: Lightning Empress [2]
The Reaper lay amidst the rubble of a half-destroyed building. His mask, cracked and broken, was discarded as he removed it, revealing his face. His suit was torn, his gear shattered, and his once-reliable sword lay in ruins.
Yet, despite the destruction surrounding him, his body bore no injuries. He felt no physical exhaustion, he was strangely refreshed but mentally, he was drained. The weight of the chaos, the endless battles, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead had taken their toll.
To make matters worse, he couldn't sense his second attribute anymore. The mysterious power that had surged to life moments ago was now completely absent, leaving him uncertain if he could ever call upon it again. With his sword and gear destroyed, he was no longer the fearsome Reaper that others revered or feared. Now, he was just an ordinary master-level Ascender with the attribute of Aerokinesis—still formidable, but far from invincible.
Without hesitation, he stored his broken belongings in his storage bracelet. Stripped of his identity as the Reaper, Kain—now dressed in his simple night tracksuit—stood amid the wreckage.
His only goal now was to find Elara and Lily and get them out of here. He didn't care about anyone else, not about Kythera City, not about the devastation that had befallen it, and certainly not about the consequences. Hell, he didn't even care if the entire world turned against him. As long as Elara and Lily were safe, nothing else mattered.
With this singular resolve burning within him, Kain began his journey toward the evacuation center, his steps steady, his mind focused on what truly mattered.
Kain slowly made his way toward the evacuation center nearby. The evacuation centers were easy to locate, thanks to the four flares positioned in each cardinal direction. The tall structures emitted bright lights high into the sky, serving as beacons for survivors. The method was designed not only for guiding people but also to divert the attention of the invading creatures.
If one walked to the central point where the four flares converged, they would inevitably reach the evacuation center. Kain relied on this system, navigating carefully through the ruins of Kythera City.
He avoided any corrupted monsters he came across, not risking a confrontation. Instead, he moved with deliberate stealth, taking advantage of the shadows and rubble for cover. Fighting wasn't an option—not with his energy drained and his abilities unusable. All he could do now was rely on his wits and determination to reach the center.
As Kain navigating towards center, he was found by Aric's group.
Just like Chris, Kain was added to the survivors' list by Aric's group as they finally arrived at the evacuation center. "Open the door! Open the door, there are survivors outside!" the group shouted. The people inside the evacuation center worked together, driven by the unity that comes in the face of a common threat.
The atmosphere inside the center was somber, with the weight of fear and uncertainty hanging in the air. Without wasting a moment, Kain began searching for his sister and niece among the crowd. His heart pounded as his eyes darted from face to face until, at last, he spotted them.
Relief washed over him like a tidal wave as he rushed toward them, pulling them into a tight embrace. For a fleeting moment, the chaos outside felt distant, overshadowed by the warmth of their reunion.
The moment of peace was short-lived, shattered by the sound of an old woman crying out in fear. Her wail echoed through the evacuation center, and it wasn't long before murmurs of despair began to rise among the gathered survivors.
"We're going to die."
"So this is the last day of Kythera City."
The atmosphere shifted from relief to panic as the reality of their situation sank in. People were losing hope, the weight of the chaos outside too much to bear.
Aric, standing firm and resolute, stepped forward. His voice rang out, sharp and commanding, cutting through the rising tide of fear. "We will live. Supreme Zander will be here in 20 minutes or so."
His words, meant to instill confidence, fell on wary ears. The survivors dared to hope, but their anxiety still lingered in the air. Before they could fully grasp the notion of safety, the ground shook, and the evacuation barrier buckled under a massive impact.
A horrifying crash sounded as the enormous body of a wyvern slammed into the barrier, its monstrous weight causing the defense to crack. The barrier was holding, but just barely, its once-immovable strength now waning.
The creature responsible for the destruction was a terrifying, spider-like terror-ranked monster, looming ominously at the edge of the barrier. Despite the wyvern's injuries, it had lost its will to fight. Its pride had been shattered, and it no longer had the strength to continue.
Panic swept through the center as the survivors screamed and scrambled, desperate to escape. Amid the chaos, Lily turned to her mother, Elara, her small voice filled with fear.
"Are we going to die, Mother?" she asked, the innocence in her question stark against the chaos unfolding around them.
Elara's breath hitched as her husband's final words echoed in her mind, each syllable seared into her memory. She could still see him, lying on that cold battlefield, his body bruised and broken, but his eyes—those eyes, so full of love and regret—never left hers. The air had been thick with the scent of blood, and his voice, strained and weak, had carried through the chaos with the clarity of a vow.
"I—" He gasped, blood trickling from his mouth, but his hand reached out to hold hers, his touch warm despite the fading life within him. "Promise me, Elara… promise me you'll take care of our daughter. Don't come to me too soon. You hear me? Live for her. Make sure she's happy… Make sure she never knows fear, no matter what."
His voice had cracked with that last plea, and Elara had nodded, tears falling freely. She promised him, swore on their love, on their life together, that she would never let Lily face the world alone.
The weight of that promise had always felt like a shield, something she carried proudly, even when times were hard. But standing there now, watching the horror unfold, the chaos of monsters breaking through the city, Elara felt that promise slip through her fingers.
She could still feel the warmth of his hand on hers, the hope he had placed in her, and yet—now? Now she wasn't sure if she could keep it. The world was crumbling, and the fear in Lily's eyes cut deeper than anything she'd faced before. Elara's heart shattered, the truth stinging like a wound that would never heal.
