Chapter 6: Chapter Six: The Dungeon Trial
The atmosphere was tense as the Seekers gathered in the central chamber. The crystalline map shimmered, highlighting a rift in a nearby dimension. Lira's voice cut through the murmurs. "We've received a distress signal from the Ashen Rift. It's unstable and leaking magic into the surrounding realms. If we don't seal it, the consequences could be catastrophic."
Kael stood at the edge of the group, heart pounding. He'd been training for weeks, but this was his first mission outside the safety of the faction's walls. Angelica caught his eye, giving him a brief nod of encouragement. He swallowed hard and stepped forward.
"I'm ready," he said, his voice steadier than he felt.
Lira's gaze lingered on him before she nodded. "Good. You'll be part of Angelica's team."
The journey to the Ashen Rift was like nothing Kael had ever experienced. The dimension was a chaotic landscape of jagged rocks and swirling ash, illuminated by an eerie crimson light. The air crackled with energy, making the hair on Kael's arms stand on end.
As they approached the rift, a gaping tear in reality that pulsed with unstable magic, Angelica turned to the group. "Stay close. The dungeon inside will test all of us, but it's especially dangerous for novices. Kael, don't wander off."
Kael nodded, clutching the artifact hidden beneath his cloak. The system had been strangely quiet since they arrived, but he felt its presence buzzing in the back of his mind.
They stepped into the rift, and the world shifted around them. The dungeon was a labyrinth of obsidian walls, glowing with veins of molten lava. The air was heavy with the scent of sulfur and the distant sound of something alive—something waiting.
"Stay alert," Lira warned. "The dungeon's magic is unpredictable."
As they moved deeper, the challenges began. The first trap was a corridor filled with shifting platforms and fire-spewing statues. Kael barely managed to leap to safety, his heart racing as he landed beside Angelica.
"Not bad, rookie," she said with a smirk. "Try not to get roasted."
Kael rolled his eyes but couldn't help the small grin that tugged at his lips.
The real danger came when they reached the central chamber. A massive golem made of lava and stone emerged, its eyes glowing with malevolent light. It roared, the sound shaking the walls.
"Take it down!" Lira shouted, launching a spear of ice at the creature.
Kael hesitated, his instincts screaming at him to run. But then he saw Angelica, her hands blazing with fire as she dodged the golem's massive fists. Summoning every ounce of courage, Kael raised his hand and cast the strongest light spell he could muster.
The orb of light struck the golem's chest, causing it to falter. Angelica seized the opportunity, unleashing a torrent of flames that melted the creature's core. It crumbled into a pile of molten rock, and the chamber fell silent.
Kael collapsed to his knees, exhausted but exhilarated. Angelica helped him up, a rare smile on her face. "Not bad, Kael. Not bad at all."
