Chapter 17: Chapter Seventeen: The Shadow Lord’s Reckoning
The victory was short-lived. The Forge trembled as a wave of dark energy rippled through the chamber. The Shadow Lord stepped forward, his form more defined now—a towering figure cloaked in darkness, his red eyes burning with fury.
"You meddling mortals think you've won?" he snarled. "The Nexus may be repaired, but its power is far from safe. And now, you've handed me the key."
Kael struggled to his feet, his light shield flickering weakly. "We won't let you take it."
The Shadow Lord laughed, his voice echoing ominously. "You can barely stand. Do you truly think you can stop me?"
Angelica stepped forward, her flames reigniting. "We'll stop you together."
Ignis let out a piercing cry, its body engulfed in fire as it took flight. The phoenix circled the chamber, its flames carving a protective barrier around the Forge. The Shadow Lord raised a hand, summoning a massive wave of shadow magic that clashed with the barrier, sparks flying as the forces collided.
Kael focused, drawing on what remained of his strength. The ring on his finger pulsed faintly, its connection to the Forge still intact. "Angelica, we need to channel the Forge's energy. It's the only way."
Angelica nodded, her hands glowing as she joined Kael. Together, they reached for the Forge's core, their combined magic reigniting its power. The light and fire surged outward, meeting the Shadow Lord's dark magic head-on.
The battle raged, the chamber shaking with every clash of magic. The Shadow Lord's power was overwhelming, his attacks relentless. Kael and Angelica fought with everything they had, but their strength was waning.
Just as the Shadow Lord prepared to unleash a devastating blow, Ignis dove toward him, its flames burning brighter than ever. The phoenix collided with the dark magic, its fiery cry echoing through the chamber. The explosion of light and shadow sent everyone reeling.
When the dust settled, the Shadow Lord was weakened, his form flickering like a dying flame. He snarled, retreating toward the shattered remnants of his forces.
"This isn't over," he growled, disappearing into the shadows.
Kael collapsed, exhaustion overtaking him. Angelica caught him before he hit the ground, her own strength barely holding. Ignis landed beside them, its flames dim but steady.
"We… we did it," Kael murmured.
Angelica nodded, a faint smile on her lips. "Yeah. We did."
Back at the Seekers' base, Kael and Angelica were hailed as heroes. The Nexus was stable once more, and the dimensions were safe—for now. But they both knew the Shadow Lord's threat still loomed, and their journey was far from over.
Kael looked down at the ring on his finger, its glow faint but persistent. "This is just the beginning, isn't it?"
Angelica smiled, her violet eyes alight with determination. "Then we'll face whatever comes next. Together."
