Chapter 98: 098 is a lucky general
Liu Banxia could swear to the heavens that he really wasn't trying to take advantage of anyone; he was just over the moon after confirming a diagnosis.
He had performed a minimally invasive appendectomy and stitched up a beating heart. This was pretty badass stuff for a surgeon who had just finished his standardized residency training.
But those achievements were aided by his system and intense training in the dreamscape. This time, however, he had made the diagnosis solely based on his medical knowledge, and the success made him a bit giddy.
Not only did he spin the young woman around three times, but he also broke into a twist dance after setting her down.
It was a dance from the classic movie *Pulp Fiction* that he had watched before. He'd initially found it odd, but the more he watched, the more intrigued he became.
While he was thoroughly enjoying his twist, he sensed a strange atmosphere in the waiting hall. Why is everyone looking at me and winking so enthusiastically?
As he turned around, he almost threw his back out when he saw Zhou Shuwen standing nearby, bag in hand.
Liu Banxia instantly straightened up, an eager-to-please smile spreading across his face.
"Come to my office," Zhou Shuwen said as he walked past.
The others could only offer him sympathetic or comforting looks. It served him right for showing off so much. There was no escape once he was caught in the act.
"Director, I made a mistake. I was just too excited about diagnosing a patient with an unexplained fever. I promise I won't do it again," Liu Banxia hurriedly explained once they were in the office.
"A patient with an unexplained fever? We'll discuss that later. I want to ask you, have all the procedures for the two car accident patients from yesterday been completed?" Zhou Shuwen asked.
"Completed. The female patient went directly to the operating room. The male patient initially wanted conservative treatment for his hematoma. However, due to emotional distress, he suffered a perforated intestine and also had to be taken to the operating room," Liu Banxia replied quickly.
"And then?" Zhou Shuwen asked coolly.
"Then, I placed them both in our surgical ward. They were in stable condition last night. I haven't done my rounds this morning yet," Liu Banxia said.
"Have you tracked the female patient's hospital fees? Have you contacted her family?" Zhou Shuwen asked.
This barrage of questions left Liu Banxia speechless.
"We're not saying we have to chase patients for hospital fees, but you need to be on top of the situation. Otherwise, what's the point of having you as chief resident? Just to dance around in the hall? Get back to what you're supposed to be doing," Zhou Shuwen dismissed him.
Watching Liu Banxia leave, Zhou Shuwen frowned, his interest piqued by the "unexplained fever" case Liu Banxia had mentioned.
After reviewing the patient's file, he received quite a shock.
It was too dangerous, truly too dangerous. If it had been him, he likely would have misdiagnosed it as well, leading to a medical incident.
Liu Banxia only knew that a diagnosis had been made, not the specific details. After Zhou Shuwen reviewed the case file, everything became crystal clear.
The patient's aneurysm, though not very large, had already compressed the esophagus, causing partial muscle necrosis. If the aneurysm were to rupture, the patient would have virtually no chance of survival.
Of course, predicting when the aneurysm might rupture was impossible. But regardless of when it happened, if the hospital failed to diagnose it and merely treated the patient for acute pharyngitis, they would be shirking their responsibility.
He had just taken over the emergency department. If such a medical incident occurred now, his future career path would become very difficult.
That kid, despite being a handful, really seems to be a lucky charm. Was I a bit too harsh on him just now? Well, harsh or not, a sword's sharpness comes from being honed.
With this thought, he quickly picked up his phone. The staffing of doctors in the emergency department, especially cardiologists, could not be delayed any longer.
In recent years, the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases had been rising and affecting younger populations. They had been lucky to avoid disaster this time, but what if similar symptoms appeared in the future?
Looking rather dejected, Liu Banxia walked out and found Head Nurse Wang Ying. "Sister Wang, do I also have to keep track of patient payments?"
"Of course. As chief resident, you're supposed to assist the director with daily management. Patient fees are a necessary part of that, especially in our emergency department where we often treat first and bill later," Wang Ying said.
"So, how do we usually handle this? Director Zhou just gave me an earful," Liu Banxia said, frustrated.
"You should have asked me yesterday! I thought you had it all figured out," Wang Ying said with a sigh of helplessness.
"Go and check; the female patient's medical fees probably haven't been settled. But it's usually not a big issue since most cars are insured. You'll need to have a good talk with the male patient and his family, and also contact the female patient's family to come over."
Liu Banxia nodded; he had learned his lesson. It wasn't that they couldn't treat someone who couldn't pay; the key was to manage the follow-up process correctly.
These procedures should have been covered in the Second Affiliated Hospital's financial regulations. However, as a mere resident undergoing standardized training before, he hadn't had the authority to concern himself with such matters.
"Don't dwell on it. You've only just started handling these things, so some oversights are inevitable. Just be more mindful in the future. By the way, what were you doing just now?" Wang Ying asked, a smile playing on her lips.
"Doing? I wasn't doing much. I was just so happy that I danced for a bit, and Director Zhou caught me," Liu Banxia said.
"Think carefully, very carefully," Wang Ying said, glancing towards Liang Xiaolin, who was watching them intently from a short distance away.
Only then did Liu Banxia remember that in his excitement, he seemed to have made another blunder.
"Um, the director is here now, so you can go home and rest," Liu Banxia said, sidling up to Liang Xiaolin.
Liang Xiaolin remained silent, still glaring at him fiercely.
Liu Banxia realized then that the girl didn't actually glare at people often. It was just that her eyes were very large, so when she stared intently at someone, it looked like a glare.
"How about I treat you to a savory Chinese crepe? I'll get them to add an extra egg and sausage," Liu Banxia suggested.
"You think you can fob me off with just one savory Chinese crepe?" This made the girl even angrier.
"Well, I don't have anything else on me right now. You should get some good rest today. Tomorrow, when I'm on duty, I'll get you an order of braised prawns from the cafeteria, alright?" Liu Banxia said.
The girl nodded habitually; braised prawns did seem more sincere than a savory Chinese crepe.
However, after Liu Banxia left, she felt even more vexed. Why did it turn into a discussion about food? Wasn't I waiting for him to apologize?
Truly, one misstep can lead to a lifetime of regret. First, she was angry, thinking he was trying to fob her off with a savory Chinese crepe. Then, she felt the braised prawns showed sincerity, and just like that, he had gotten away with it.
The girl felt a bit crestfallen. She wasn't usually like this. How was it that whenever she dealt with this shameless fellow, her intelligence seemed to desert her?
Their little interaction amused Wang Ying, who could only remark with a sigh, "Ah, to be young."
