Chapter 90: 090 was punished
They say that a new official lights three fires upon taking office. As the newly appointed deputy director dealing with operations in the Emergency Department, it was expected for Zhou Shuwen to do the same. However, no one expected that his first fire would burn Liu Banxia directly.
In fact, Liu Banxia hadn't done anything particularly wrong. He had merely completed his daily task in the Proctology Department. But in Zhou Shuwen's eyes, considering he was now a full-time doctor in the Emergency Department, this amounted to abandoning his post. So irresponsible, Zhou Shuwen thought.
"What should be done?" Zhou Shuwen asked.
"Director, you can do whatever you think is best, just don't kick me out," Liu Banxia said, stealing a glance.
"What you do in your free time is none of my concern. But you left your post during work hours. You tell me, how should I punish you?" Zhou Shuwen continued.
"Well... maybe I can treat everyone to extra dishes for lunch?" Liu Banxia tentatively proposed.
"Heh, quite the big spender now, aren't we? It must be nice to have money," Zhou Shuwen sneered.
Liu Banxia was so scared his pulse nearly vanished. The tone was clearly a bad omen, so he could only lower his gaze and stand there obediently.
"You have money, and you like adding extra dishes. That's great," Zhou Shuwen continued. "Buy five dressed chickens. Take Liang Xiaolin with you. The two of you will sit in the waiting hall and dissect them all. Practice your sutures on the chicken skin. Afterward, send the chicken meat to the canteen. We'll eat that for lunch today. I'll eat with you."
With that, Zhou Shuwen walked into his new office to get things organized.
Such a punishment left the onlookers almost choked with suppressed laughter—it was so outrageous yet so amusing. Poor Liu, they couldn't help him at all.
And Liang Xiaolin? Her pretty face scrunched up in extreme displeasure. What did this have to do with her? She had clocked in on time, done nothing wrong, and had even seen a patient. Why did she have to dissect chickens with this guy in public, in front of everyone?!
Though utterly bewildered, she didn't dare to question him. All she could do was vent her anger on Liu Banxia, glaring at him fiercely.
"Um, sorry about that. My mistake has dragged you into this mess, like a fish cooked in the same pot," Liu Banxia said sheepishly.
"You should have known better, especially since Director Zhou was coming today. Anyway, go buy the chickens quickly, and bring some ice blocks, or the meat will spoil," Wang Ying said, smiling.
"Sister Wang, that's not fair of you," Liu Banxia complained, but he had no choice but to go to the market.
Patients visiting the Emergency Department of Second Affiliated Hospital today were exceptionally lucky. They witnessed a rare scene: two doctors in the waiting hall, each with a chicken before them, diligently practicing sutures and deboning the meat. It wasn't something you saw every day.
"Yo, brother, planning a career change?" Liu Haibing walked in carrying a large bag of fruits and nutritional supplements just as Liu Banxia was concentrating on his work.
"I made a mistake and am now facing the consequences. Are you here to see that young man again? He should be able to get out of bed and move around today," Liu Banxia said.
"Although it's no longer my concern, I still feel uneasy if I don't come to check on him. You two carry on, I won't disturb you." With that, Liu Haibing headed upstairs to the second floor.
Liang Xiaolin was incredibly frustrated. This place was becoming like a zoo exhibit. How did so many people know this unreliable fellow, Liu Banxia? Everyone who passed by would stop and ask.
"Don't underestimate this task. It can help you hone many skills. Chicken hearts, livers, and the tendons on these chicken legs are all good for practice," Liu Banxia said, trying to console her.
The girl glared at him resentfully. Nothing good ever happens when she's involved with this guy, she thought.
"Try to look on the bright side. Some things we can't fight, so we can only try to endure them. What a rare opportunity for practice! Look how busy everyone else is, while we're here, quite at ease," Liu Banxia started again.
"Can't you just shut your mouth?" the girl fumed.
"Alright, alright, I'll keep suturing. Tsk, tsk, this tendon I've sutured looks pretty good, doesn't it?" Liu Banxia said, showing off the chicken leg he was holding.
Liang Xiaolin waved the scalpel in her hand, frightening Liu Banxia into silence.
"Well, well, Director Zhou is giving you two some special treatment, huh?" At this moment, Jiang Tao strolled over with his hands behind his back.
"Director Jiang, why is a busy man like yourself here watching the show?" Liu Banxia said resentfully.
"Haha, since you helped us out, I had to come and take a look. Hmm, the suturing is quite good. Don't waste the chicken butts either; you can't let your skills from the Proctology Department go to waste," Jiang Tao commented after a glance.
"PFFT!"
Liang Xiaolin, who was beside them, couldn't hold it in any longer and burst out laughing.
Jiang Tao didn't continue teasing the grumbling Liu Banxia and walked straight into Zhou Shuwen's office.
"Punishing him like this, aren't you afraid he'll quit?" Jiang Tao asked, laughing.
"That kid needs some rules set for him. He's a good piece of jade, but he needs careful carving," Zhou Shuwen said.
"Then I won't have him come over starting tomorrow, although our patients in the Proctology Department miss him dearly. We've already received five commendation banners, and they're still hanging in our department office," Jiang Tao said.
"Stop beating around the bush. Tell me, why are you here?" Zhou Shuwen glanced at him.
"Hehe, it's nothing much. I just wanted to ask, if none of you are interested, I think I can mentor him in the future. Of course, his main work will still be in your Emergency Department," Jiang Tao said with a straight face.
"So the fox's tail is finally showing, huh? Still not willing to let go?" Zhou Shuwen asked, amused.
"He's a surgeon, after all. His academic qualifications also need to be addressed," Jiang Tao commented.
"We need to put some pressure on him; it's not good if his path is too smooth. Don't you get involved; you're not the first to talk to me about this," Zhou Shuwen said.
Jiang Tao was startled. "Who else? I heard this kid is getting pretty good at bonesetting now. Could it be Old Xu?"
"Chief Director Li," Zhou Shuwen uttered.
This left Jiang Tao speechless. Just what was so good about this kid?
The commitment Jiang Tao had offered him back then, considering the circumstances at the time, was like offering an olive tree. But looking at it now? It was merely a small leaf at best.
"Eh? Looks like things are about to get interesting. Well? Are you confident about competing with Chief Director Li?" Jiang Tao asked, grinning.
Zhou Shuwen looked at him helplessly. "You're the ones who see his potential, not me."
"Haha, still so concerned when you claim it has nothing to do with you?" Jiang Tao was thoroughly amused.
"Let me tell you, Old Xu from Jinshui District Hospital also has his eyes on him. It's just that our hospital moved quickly; otherwise, that kid might have really been poached by him."
"I'd advise you not to be too hard on him; his character is quite good. Besides, you should also let him show off his skills with that small-incision appendectomy of his."
"Let's see how he performs first," Zhou Shuwen said, looking somewhat resigned.
Jiang Tao was truly amused. It was the first time he had seen Zhou Shuwen troubled over a doctor. But it had to be said, Liu Banxia was lucky. He had even caught Li Mingwu's eye, who had considered taking him as a disciple.
He really wondered if there would be a famous scene of people fighting over a disciple in the future. Even Old Xu from Orthopedics had praised Liu Banxia privately several times.
